Hi all, I am a putz and went completely AWOL due to work and other reasons for the last few weeks. I am trying hard to get back on the wagon, and I want to thank everyone for posting on my blogs while I was gone. It really helped when I did get the balls to log back in.

This week I am easing back in, and I may go silent for a couple of days when I travel for work this week. But I will be back! However, I think it will be quite impossible for me to make my back through all the posts...

Thank you everyone - you guys rock for not giving up on me!

Isn't it great!  You guys kept up with me when I went AWOL too.  Glad your back Lisa.

Les

Robyn,

I'm headed to the pool in an hour or two and I'm still trying to understand for sure what you are talking about.  I understand the reaching across the midline which very well might be part of it, but the elbow I don't.  So the elbow stays near the surface and just the hand and forearm rotate down and through?  I'm guessing I'm doing that wrong as well.  Wish I would have been able to go to my lesson and have video done.

 Thanks for your help

coldheat - 2008-03-03 10:00 PM Anyone else's butt/where the butt and upper leg meets really hurt them while riding? Mine gets so sore after a while...i wear bike shorts, and i know my bike fits me properly...I just started riding my bike on a trainer that i just got instead of gym bikes...do i just need to get used to my saddle?...I dont remember having such bad saddle butt last year

It hurts more on the trainer for me....You will notice a big difference once you hit the road...

...Sorry for lurking....our group is a little quiet.

OK... i don't know that I can explain this very well, especially since I am not an expert at this.  It was something I just learned myself.

When you start your pull, start by "breaking" at the elbow.  Bend your elbow and pull by pulling the water under you keeping your hand directly in line with the center of your body.  Think of it as you are pulling your body over the line on the bottom of the pool.  I keep my hand in line with the stripe painted on the pool floor.

Does that make sense?

Hi Everyone,

Its been forever since I've posted. I have not done a tri before and got on a biking team, love running, so they needed people to do tri's and I figured I could do what I like but not be bored with just doing the one sport. My first tri will be an indoor tri on March 30, outdoor tri's start in June (michigan is too cold before that for my blood).

Here is me freaking out over swimming. I thought I was an okay swimmer until I started training. Now I realize that I am not a good swimmer at all. I can't breathe properly and always break my cadence then get fatigued. I know it has a lot to do with my breathing and stroke. I have two options, take expensive private lessons (I've just put $300 into my bike) or join a masters group. I think the masters group would kick me out and tell me I belong in the toddler class. Does anyone have experience with masters groups? Are they all expert swimmers? Are there ability requirements (like swimming 500yards, etc)? Should I just suck it up and pay for the private swim coach?

My goal is to finish a sprint tri, not last, in my age group (female 43). Other than that I just want to beat my next door neighbor (evil, I know, but it really is the only competitiveness I have) who will be doing her 2nd sprint tri in July (which will be my 3rd tri by that point).

I hope all this makes sense. I am fatigued from working out 5 days a week and taking the night off, hence being able to finally post in this forum.

I know you all are always out there for support and it really does help even if I am not always an active participant. Thanks for any advice you can offer this old, slow, fat, triathlete.

I've just started master's swimmers and it's very intense. I personally think it might be too much, but that is just my experience with this particular group. Private lessons would probably benefit you, however there are adult classes at the ymca's that cost a lot less and may give you the same benefit. The only thing is that your first tri is very soon...so a few private lessons might be better to get you going faster...

Don't be afraid of what other people think of your swimming because no matter how good they are now, everyone has flailed about at some point.

Good luck!

Alan:

You have been doing so well.  You've committed to this and if you don't do your sprint - well, I won't do mine either.  Well, not really, but guilt can be a gift that keeps on giving.

Yes, even if you have to backfloat or doggy paddle, you'll be happier that you did than having backed out altogether.

Excuses for not training a day here and there are understandable.  They are, however, unacceptable for backing out of your first tri.

How am I doing?

There is no doubt this group is the only thing that got me back on track as everything else was saying just give up and do a duathlon and leave the shoulders alone (I think some of that is physical pain telling me that and some of it is mental swimming block but I won't admit that too loudly!)  I knew if I don't complete my tri in April there is no way i could show my face in this forum again...and I just like you guys too much for that!

...and I did 300 yards in the pool today with no pain!!!!  I know that isn't much but I'm telling myself I only need to do 500 in 7 weeks so take it easy!!!

Way to go with the swim! I have some shoulder irritation too. I've been working with a physical therapist who's also a triathlete. He's got me doing band work, more core work and he works the tight spots out. I go once a week. He suggested really lengthening out my body on the swim. It is helping but I've had to be patient. So, keep up the good work!

Glad to hear from you, Lisa, and thanks for the post on my Training Log.

When is your first tri this year?

First weekend in May! Need to get training regularly - quick! Still traveling with work, but I am going to try to get a run in tomorrow. A lot of business travel has thrown my training way out of whack.

Sorry I haven't been posting much recently.  The majority of my training has been on the bike the last few weeks to prepare for the Solvang Half Century, which happens this weekend!

I'm heading up there tomorrow morning, to meet up with one of my brothers, who will join me on the 50 miler on his mountain bike!  Should be fun!  There's supposed to be over 5,000 riders.

Wish me luck!

Just wanted to "bump" up our group. We were too low on the list. I'll post my goals for the weekend since I'll be all alone with the rest of the family going up to the mountains for snow camping (not my thing).
Swim today 2000 meters
Run Sat. a.m. bike in the p.m.
Swim and Bike (brick) on Sunday. Whew will those endorphins be running or what?
Have a great weekend ya'll -- I lived in Florida for a while and it comes out every so often. :~)

Lynn

I'll take any inspires if you're so inclined. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who left me inspres while I was sick, and travelling.  I appreciate them, and will begin reciprocating immediately!!!

I took the plunge and bought my first road bike yesterday.  I decided on the Giant OCR1.  I was able to buy one of last years model that they had in stock, and that saved me %15.  SO that was cool.  The fitting took a little over an hour, and I was really stoked with the whole process.  Too bad it is *22 here right now.  I did get a trainer also though, so I will log some time on that.  Have a good weekend everyone.

Bennet

Another OOOOOoooooo, Ahhhhhhh!!!  Nice Giant, enjoy the new digs.  Giant seems to have a stellar rep in the road bike world, so you should be good to go.  When your warming that thing up on the trainer, just imagine how nice it'll be when you get it on the asphalt!!

Good luck kicking the flu, don't push too hard coming back.

Wow Bennet!

She's gorgeous. What's her name? (asking in honor of Keith)

Ok...I got up at 5:30, wait , I woke up at 5:00 and got out of bed around 6:00. I had found a farmer jane wetsuit on craigslist for 50.00. I'd been looking on ebay and they were all going for 75-100 minimum(used) I drove to Austin this morning (2 hours one way) tried it on and yea!!! I fits perfectly.  It is an Ironman stealth has no tears or fingernail divits etc. I'm so happy to have one.  The H20 in Gaveston is 62 right now and the race is less than a month away.  Most people wear them apparently and to rent them costs 40.00 if there are any available. I really didn't want to buy one without trying it on. Now, after the race I can get some open water swims in before Danskin in June.

No training for me Weds (regular day off) Thursday or Friday. I was really tired.  I fell asleep Thursday at 7:30 woke up at 11 and went right back to sleep. Fell asleep last night at 8:30.  I had a massage Wednesday PM for two hours. She worked on me pretty hard.  Maybe working out toxins? Maybe I'm just tired. I've been going at it pretty hard.

21 days until Race Day!!!!

Les

Glad to see you  back everyone.

Hi Guys....Miss me????Laughing

( Okay the first perosn who says, "You were gone???" is dead meat. LOL

Sorry for the hiatus, life continues to try and get in the way. I missed all of you. I finally got to rid ehte bike toady for about an hour. First time with the clipless pedals, yes I fell down at a stop sign. One little skin to the "bell-bow."

My groin muscles are killing me, post ride. Do I need to adjust my cleats or pedals or something??? This just does not feel right.  I could understand quads and hams hurting but groin muslces????
