I can't take advice from someone who has such atrocious spelling skills.

As one of our neighbors from up north, English is clearly not Jon's first language, but he does pretty darn well!  He's a great athlete & coach, and I like that his advice is always simple & down-to-earth.  If I ever move to BC, I'm definitely hiring him as my coach

How does the bike and run SN station work?  I am assuming they will have water there so I can just put dry perpetuem in my SN bag and then mix it up at the station.

It's not really a station. They have the bags all lined up, ask you if you need it, shout your number out and by the time you stop someone has it for you. But I never even dismount the bike, just do what I need to do while standing there with the volunteer holding the bag. I think there is usually an aid station right after though. Of course because I don't stop and get off the bike, I may have missed things like water so someone else might be able to address that.

LB22 - 2010-09-05 9:31 AM Does anyone know if that hill right after Veterans Park in Verona (right after the highway underpass, as you begin the road to Mt Horeb) is paved? 4 weeks ago it was gravel; last weekend it looked harder, but did not have any asphalt.  I prefer asphalt

Then again, at this point, I can't do anything about it. Keep my head down and keep riding.

If you're talking about Valley Road or Valley View or whatever...it's getting a lot more packed down, but as far as I know, it will not be asphalt.

Very important to be careful if that's the case, because the middle of the road has little metal things sticking out about every five feet. If you try to blindly pass someone, your tire will be flatter than IMFL.

Anyone else packing this weekend?
Even with my incredibly detailed checklist, it's a little overwhelming. And kinda surreal. Am I really leaving in 4 days for the race I've been thinking about every day for the past year?

Can't freaking wait!

Yep, shoppin' & packin' now...  Wayyyyyyy too much stuff so far, lol.

Stressing more about the logistics of travel & avoiding massive parking hassles once I'm in town (getting to expo, transporting gear for bike/bag check, etc - my hotel isn't very close).  Oh well, it'll work out.

I'm now planning to leave early Thurs so I can do the athlete check-in on that day - then r'n'r Friday around the expo and get things ready for Sat/Sun.

Safe travels!

Cheers, Chris

I have been laying things out in my family room.   I have white plastic bags labeled which I will dump into the official bags when I get them.  I may be missing something, but it just does not seem to be all that much.  The usual tri stuff that I take to all tris, with some extra Infinit, a long sleeve for Run SN, but that's about it.  I have some minor first aid stuff in each bag, but that doesn't take up much space.  My T1 bag will have the most stuff in it which some will be consumed, some left on the bike when I get back and some on my body til I finish.  Upon return from the bike I should have to toss my helmet, gloves and that's about it in my T2 bag, grab my shoes out of T2, visor, hit the road!

In a way since I have a T1 and a T2 bag, I won't have as much laying around in one location as I would if I was doing a regular triathlon where everything is setup under my bike!

I will probably toss some rain gear in one of the bags depending on the forecast on Saturday.

My son suggested buying a cheap pair of sunglasses for the early part of the run, then tossing them when it got dark instead of wearing my good ones and then having to carry them somehow when it got dark.  Any thoughts?

Am I missing something?

I've done 2 IM's.  One I finished in the dark the other in day light, but it was pouring rain for the 2nd half of the run (IMCDA 2009).  For both of them I wore my good glasses and just handed them to my wife when I didn't need them anymore.  Technically it may fall into outside assistance, but if they want to give me a penalty for handing my glasses over to my wife so be it.  Don't over think it, keep it simple my friend.

I'm packing tonight and probably leaving tomorrow.  I'm going to stop at a couple of places on the way and make a nice trip out of it.  I guess I should get started. :-)

Hydro what are some of your thoughts on parking and such?  I have the same concerns.

I'm staying at the Marriot Courtyard Madison West / Middleton, and they will be offering shuttle service all weekend, but I don't know how well that will work out - if they have a good plan in place, I'll certainly use it.  I hope that works well, but I'm preparing for the worst, too.

I'll fend for myself on Thurs & Friday, either driving to the Terrace or riding my bike - I think I'll also pack up my Brompton folding bike

But Saturday's bike/gear check-in and then getting to&fro on race day has me more concerned.  Hopefully, the shuttle can get my gear over on Sat, and then heck, I'll cab it both ways on race day if it comes to that

One way or another, it'll all work out fine, I'm sure!

I'm planning on dumping my sunglasses at some point.  I prefer running with glasses even at dusk, but the only glasses I have are $5 Walmart ones so it's not an effort or extra expense to go buy a new pair.

Same here - we did a lot of packing today and for the first time since this whole thing started, I'm feeling a bit nervous.    A good nervous though

Thanks Hydro!  Yeah I think I am staying in Middleton too.  A shuttle is real nice!  There is also a shuttle for the event itself, to/from the Alliance Center.  That would take out the race day stress, though I think I'd still rather have my friend drop me off closer.

The nice part about being in Middleton, is being away from the hype.  I like to have a quiet dinner Saturday night without all the IM excitement around.

Are you going to have a wrist band (ie, you're doing the race yourself).  If so I say yes.  If not.. a bit more tricky but I bet a volunteer would take it in.

If anyone needs help with transportation while in Madison Thursday-Saturday I may be able to assist. I live on the far west side and since I am a hometown person I do not have to worry about all the other logistics you all need. Feel free to ask for anything and I'll do my best to help. I am staying in Milwaukee Thursday overnight just to keep low and relax before the IM storm hits Friday, but after that I will be in Madison through the weekend

I've started making a pile of my clothes, gear, etc. to get ready to put into more distinct piles of clothes, gear, etc. I am blessed to not have to travel for this and I can't imagine that my head would be screwed on straight right now if I had to. If anyone traveling from out of the city needs any logistical help/coordination, please send me a PM and I'd be glad to see if I can help out in any way!

Last year I stayed at a hotel north of town - ended up parking at a ramp on Wilson, just north of the Terrace. I may be wrong, but the parking fee was only about $5 for the day. Only a few hundred feet from the race site.

Was this on race day or for the other days?  A ramp on Wilson?  Like an exit ramp? :-)

You local guys, what are your plans for travel and parking on the expo days and race day?

Thanks a bunch!

I parked at the ramp on both Sat and Sun. It's a city parking ramp. Entrance/Exit is from Wilson Street.

The ramp he's talking about is right off of Doty Street. You can enter on Wilson or whatever that other cross street is. It's one block away from Monona Terrace. If you take John Nolen Drive into town, stay in the left lane as you enter. When you get to the lights by Machinery Row Bicycles, make a left onto Wilson Street (incidentally, if you turn right there, it's Williamson, or Willy Street). Go up the hill and bear into the left lane as you approach the first set of lights. You'll have an option to turn right, go "straight" onto King St. or bear left on Wilson. Go onto Wilson and the parking ramp is at the end of the first block.

Incidentally, I'm walking to the race at about 5-530am. 10-15 minute walk for me, so it'll give me some time to calm down.

Probably.  But then again, I don't think you are going to find anyone in this thread that isn't think about this race too much. :-)

If all fails, ask a volunteer to do something for you, they are wonderful.  But the wrist band basically gets you free reign in the transition area.
