aspeelma - 2009-12-18 7:11 AM Robin, what part of NC are you in? I read that some parts could get a foot of snow.

We are right in the are where they are calling for "significant buildup of ice (1-2 inches)covered with a significant buildup of snow -3-8 inches). This in an area with winding, steep mountain roads. I would enjoy the heck out of it if I didn't have to travel tomorrow to Charlotte in the middle of the storm to pick up my mom from the airport. 1 1/2 hours each way. Did I mention she has made worrying her profession for 80+ years!

Be careful traveling. You might want to keep an eye out too, if there is snow at the airport her flight could be delayed.

Good morning Ghoulies!!!!

They're calling for snow here this weekend. I've heard anywhere from 1 to 12 inches. My 10 mile run this weekend should be exciting!!!

Have a great day!

5" - 10" inches possible here!  Snowshoeing for me.  Good luck on your 10 miler!  When is your half?

My half is Jan 17th so I really can't miss my run this weekend. I was going to run 5 tonight then my 10 on Sunday. Now I'm thinking 3 tonight and 10 first thing tomorrow morning before we get too much snow.

I think running 10 tomorrow is a good idea...and you could probably skip the 3 tonight.  10 inches of snow is ALOT.  FYI, my longest run for the half I did in April was only 11 miles.  I got behind on training and was only able to build to 11 and didn't taper.  Sounds like you've put the mileage in to finish.  Key now is not to get hurt.

Thanks Kim. I had 2 slow weeks, because of my knee, so I'm definitely trying to avoid injury now. I really want to do the longer distances, if I can. I'm confident I can complete the HM at this point, the questions left are how long will it take, and how much will it hurt? I'll do what I can tomorrow, and I'll take my cell in case I have to call someone to come get me.

I'm still thinging about the Unite HM, too. If I do that one, where is a good place to stay that wouldn't be too far away from the start?

Ann, sounds like you're being smart about the training.  Are you icing your knee after your runs?  That always helps me.  Also, I think that while tortuous, ice baths after long runs (9-10+ miles) are a great recovery tool.

Definitely let me know if you decide to do the Unite HM.  It would be great to meet in person.  I will check out nearby hotels and get a recommendation for you.  Would you be bringing the kids and want amenities for them, such as in indoor pool?

Yes, I have been icing my knee after I run, I do think it helps. I did ice baths after my 2 9 mile runs. I can't say I enjoy them, but I think they help, too.

I'll have to find out of they're going to come along or not. Since it's not too far I might be able to talk them into it. Thanks for checking that out for me. I haven't registered yet, I've been waiting to see how the knee was, but I think I'm going to do it anyway.

Ann, the other race that you might want to check out is the NYRR half.  It's usually held in August, but they've moved it to March 21st this year.   It's run partly in Central Park, partly on the streets.  Very fun.  It is a much bigger race than Unite will be (first year for Unite) and much more festive.  Not trying to talk you out of Unite, but if you decide to do NYC it fills up quickly.  I am still hoping to do the Ft Lauderdale half in February so am going to skip NYC.

ceilidh - 2009-12-18 5:01 AM We are in an area that doesn't get a lot of snow. They get a lot all around us (25 minutes east/ north) but we usually don't. It would be a really fun treat if I didn't have to make this treck.
sigh.
Today, I WILL throw snowball(s) though!

That sounds fun!   Do take care traveling.

wgraves7582 - 2009-12-18 10:17 AM Ann - layering is difficult this time of the year because you never know.  Running always go with the least amount of clothing possible because you get so darn warm.  As long as head/hands are covered you are not going to freeze out there - just run faster to warm up

By the sounds of it you might have had too much on and got extra sweaty and that is when the trouble occurs.

As an example - skiing in the Sierras - temp was low 30's but sun was super shinny - I went with just a wicking shirt and a fleece pullover.  About 10 minutes out I had the pullover off and was comfortable the rest of the day.

Biking is a whole different story because of the natural wind chill created.

You are better off having to remove layers though.  If you leave the house and are comfortable you are too overdressed.  You want to be cold when you first leave.

Thanks Bill. I had read the part before about leaving the house comfortable, it's hard to follow though. Now I'm trying to decide what to wear to run tomorrow while it's snowing. I think in the morning it is supposed to be light, and snow heavier in the afternoon, so I'm running first thing.

wgraves7582 - 2009-12-18 10:23 AM Stacie - don't worry about the Karma on the registration rules.  They say 3 days it should be 3 days.  If they are going to make exceptions for people - make them for everyone!

I could go off on a huge vent right now about people and not following rules but it is Friday and I did just get back from a nice trip - oh well here goes.

On the plane they tell you to turn off the cell phone - they mean everyone - and that includes you lady just because you are so important that the world just might end if you don't text your friend back about Tiger's affair.  The rule does not make much sense to me but guess what it is a rule - follow it or drive!

And yes I realize you are in a rush to get to your gate but guess what so are the rest of us.  I realize that you are super important special but is it my fault that you woke up late and are behind your anal schedule that you have set out to make your life so special.  Get behind me or I just might have to lay some Ghoulie smackdown on you!

And yes you keep your license in that neat little holder so it does not get lost but guess what remember the 4 planes that were hijacked a couple of years ago and did some major damage to America - well yes that is the reason you have to take it out for the TSA agent to inspect.  I know you are not a terrorist and I am not one either but I still have it out for him to look at because guess what - yes that is a rule!

Wow I feel better.  I came home yesterday not really liking people and here are 3 prime reasons why.

Thanks for listening!

She must travel a lot, because I think she's been on my flights before!

QUESTION:   Can ANY type of bike go on a trainer?

I want to do a tri in February.  The bike portion is indoors on a trainer.  They say that they provide the trainer and set up each bike & rider by weight.  My bike is just an old regular old-fashioned bike.  In fact it is a youth bike.  Will there be any problem putting it on a trainer?
