Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Good luck, Karen, Jeff, and Terry! Steve - I'm so sorry to hear about Jasper. I hope he isn't in too much pain. Kelly - Hope the massage helps the SI joint. I was at the pool early for a short swim. 1:15 on the trainer later, as it's raining again. I had hoped to get back outside. My first triathlon is in 3 weeks, and I can use all the road experience I can get! |

50 miles today on the bike. I'm beat. My kids were well past tired last night when we got home and as a result slept like #$@!. Somehow my wife has them programmed to call for me in the middle of the night. Seriously, only me. Up at 5:30 to ride after getting a horrible sleep is no fun, but who can complain when you're out by yourself in the middle of cows and corn for 2.5 hours? Roadkill count: 2 armadillos, 1 squirrel, 1 fox, and a skunk. All had vultures circling. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Steve sorry to hear about Jasper. I did not compete Saturday. Many reasons. One: weather has not let me train as well as I would have liked and my knee bothered my about half of the week after my stupid little fall. Two: covering the Baseball tournament lasted until after 10:00 Friday night and after leaving home by seven for a five hour drive down I was just plain exhausted in the morning. Three: weather continued to be cooler than usual and we came through a snow storm on the way down that spooked me about the water temps. Four: after reading all the posts about not competing if you are not training enough I was having so many doubts that it took me out of my game. I started Tris to have fun and get in shape. I have looked to this site for encouragement and information. I think I am in over my head in this group. Not sure what to do next except get back to where I was going a while back and relax and have fun. Tomorrow I will hit the pool and bike if the rain does not happen. Oh I did pick up my packet and changed to the Athena group (yes I had to get on a scale), I got analysed and fitted for new shoes at the running store and bought compression sleeves for my calves. The final two days and all the way up to the minutes before I needed to head to the race site I was all over the place as to what to do. I finally decided to spent the day hiking with my husband and it was good.

Having issues with my SI joint, so no running this weekend. Back on the bike for another 20 miles or so tonight and then another 4 hours on the bike tomorrow (split 2 and 2). Not happy with not running but also not happy with the unilateral lower back / hip pain. good thoughts to you and your SI joint. lay on the floor on your stomach proped up on your elbows. this decompresses the disc and should help a bit. tell shaun to give you a good butt rub. Getting it worked on by the massage therapist. I can do a cortisone shot but only sparingly. I don't want to waste my shot now when I may need it for LP. dont get a cortisone shot without speaking to a neurosurgeon first - I had a herniated disc and didnt need one. they releave the pain but do not treat anything. PLus, a cortisone injuection would only be appropriate if oral steriodal antiinflamatories were ineffective. I'll call you tomorrow to discuss. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Rudedog55 - 2011-05-22 3:20 PM 133 miles on bike in two days, and a 3 mile run also. Half rack ribs, some mac and cheese and 1.5 beers to wash it down. Good weekend Jeff, you left your helmet here, we will meet up so you can get it thanks x100 - good ride, great food! Here is my take on the day: Rudy (Rudedogg55) and I rode teh Bloomin metric and did a 5k T run after. This was my "dress rehearsal" Rev3 in 2 weeks. Goal was to keep HR steady, stay strong throughout and see how the first few miles of the run felt. And, see how nutrition worked out. Hard day physically. Conditions were terrible it was raining and cold. The roads were in horendous condition. I was very cautious on the down hills. THe ride was hilly but not crazy, the first 20 miles were flat to rolling, the next 20 were pretty hilly, mostly rollers but with several severe uphills. The last 20 were rolling. I rode steady and averaged about 16 mph for the ride includiting a 2-3 minute stop at each aid station. HR and speed were pretty even.
Post ride: my back was really a wreck. this is the weak spot for me. Long rides really take their toll on my low back (i herniated the L5-S1 disc 2 years ago and it has never been the same despite a lot of work). Legs were tired but fairly good and lungs were good. After the ride Rudy and I did a T run, at first my back just seized and spasmed, lots of pain. But it did loosen up, not great but the pain was manageable. I will definitely hit the tylenol hard prior to T2 in 2 weeks. My back did loosen up and I got up to speed after about the first mile. I was actually feeling preety good when we finished - not great. long stretch, then some Rudy-Q and beer. Summary: nutrition is fine. I will finish the race. I think 6:29 is a reasonable goal, 5:59 will take a little magic. My bike is just not strong enough and my back is a severe physical limiter. I can suffer, I'll give myself that and that may create a bit of magic, who knows. BTW, Rudy is a machine on the bike, he an i are about the same size and he flys up hills whereas I deflate. it really is pretty impressive.

Today I saw a couple of possum (they are so ugly!) and I don't know how many squirrels - there were too many to count. And no, I did not take a single one out. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I finished my race, it was not pretty, but I finished. I'll start by saying it was a very small race, very small. I placed first in my age group, but I'm not real sure there were any others in my age group. They did award early, so we heard the overall top 3 female & top 3 male winners, then they did the age group award for those who were finished. A lot of folks were still out on the course, hence the reason I'm not sure if any others were in my age group. But, 1st is 1st, so I'll take it. And despite a hot hot run, I think I did fairly well. My time was decent and although there were many times I wanted to just quit the run (and I never want to quit) today, I kept plugging along and finished. So I'm proud of that. Takeaway - need to figure out nutrition because it was a complete failure today. I started ok but then just didn't feel like eating or drinking anything so the run was tough. More hilly biking because this course was brutal and not at all what I expected. The hills never let up. My legs were toast before we hit the halfway mark. And I do a fair amount of hills around here, but too much coasting so no more!!! Maybe hill repeats??? Edited by karen26.2 2011-05-23 7:23 PM |

I was signed up as a Team Relay member, with me doing just the bike portion, and a friend doing the two 5k portions. He's a solid runner, who has a PR of 5:55 pace in a 5k, and a few marathons under his belt. It was great to have him on my team. Even with that said, i still wish I did this myself. Very well organized, and I know for sure I could have finished strong. It was so cool to see how tranistion works, and how so serious some people are. Don't take that the wrong way, I am as competitive as any of you here. I deifnitely had a blast today, feel I did my best, and rode hard. I hate to say this, but I think I had more fun than my mountain bike races. Uh ohhhhhhh........ I am pretty sure we got 2nd overal in the Team Relay, but the official results are not out yet. I can't say that is great though, there were not that many teams. Sounds like great prep for the Rev3 race. Is there anything you can do for your back? Or do you have to live with that pain? A T run after a long bike sounds pretty awful to me |

Sorry to hear you didn't participate in the race. If you weren't feeling it, then you probably made the right decision. I think everyone in this group has different personal goals - some are trying to KQ, some are trying to move up to longer distance races, some are moving on to exclusive cycling, some are in it for fun and fitness, and others are trying the sport for the first time. That's what I like about this group. Obviously, I'm new to the sport. I ask a million beginner questions, and I honestly don't know the answers to them. I am in it to learn the sports and do the very best I can. It feels so good to set personal goals and meet them. Please don't feel discouraged. Don't forget your own personal goals (and why you are doing triathlon), and you will do fine. |

There's a difference between being undertrained (but still knowing that you can complete the distances safely) and not being able to complete the distance safely. I think you had a lot of good reasons for deciding not to race but you shouldn't have any doubt that you can finish the distance safely because you can. I don't think you're in over your head. I think there are a lot of differrent levels and there are lots of things that we can learn from each other.

Nice! (You did hear how hot it was yesterday didn't you???) It was around 90 yeah? I stop paying attention into May as it gets rediculous at times. I thought yesterday was somewhat nice with a breeze. Bike course turned out even faster than I expected which is pretty much why Kelly is coming down here. Don't blame her. It a good bike course for me in particular (as is IMKY). Rolling hills. Just enough to change is up a little and use different muscles but no serious climbing. I want to be able to have a strong ride (and stay in my watts range) so I can set myself up for a good run. |

I think you pretty much know going in it's going to be hot (just like IMKY) so if you train for it and are prepared for the heat I'm sure you'll do great. I will say that last year there were 8 of us from my tri goup that did IMKY, and even though we trained all summer in heat & humidity, it still took it's toll on all of us. Funny though, I'd do it again mainly because of the time trail swim start, but mostly the bike course. I LOVED that bike course. So have you studied all the IM bike courses? What do you know about Wisconsin? I've heard it's a little hillier and more technical than Lousiville, but also have been told that if I like Louisville I will love Wisconsin. Curious what you or anyone else knows about Wisconsin bike and what I'm in for. I'm glad you signed up for Texas. |
