Thanks Jeff, got it.  I am also calling another swim instructor just to see how they are different.

Everyone w/o hard today!

Hey, here's a photo that shows the recovery I was talking about.  It's our very own Dirk, pulled from his facebook page.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/306499_363526953686200_662282065_n.jpg

Notice how the elbow is basically directly beside him and the hand is down near the water and in front of the body.  Pulling the elbow, and especially the hand, behind the horizontal plane of the body will eventually lead to shoulder soreness not to mention early fatigue.

I'm sure nobody caught the GROSS over rotation of my head though.  Right???  I have been working on this in the winter months and I swear I don't do that anymore!  I promise!

We'll be away on our Disney vacation that week!

Speaking of vacations - what do you all do for vacation? When we go to Oklahoma in May to visit my sister we are riding with my parents and my 22 year old nephew. I'm half tempted to tell them to drive my van and throw my bike in the back but I don't know the area at all and I don't know if there are any nice places to ride. We'll be gone Friday-Wednesday, that is a long time for me to be without my bike :). I am going to search for a YMCA with a cycling class I guess.

Dina we usually go away for a week during the summer. This year it will be probably be one of the first two weeks of July. We have a timeshare in Las Vegas but are looking to trade for something closer to home since airfare is out of control. We are trying to do Virginia Beach this year but not sure if we are going to get it. In any case I plan on training while on vacation. I figure I should be able to swim and run the only question is whether I bring the bike or not. I was thinking of just looking at finding a gym where I could workout at for the week. If I can find one with a pool that would be ideal. I'll probably decide once I know for sure where for sure I am going. Last year we went to the Poconos and it would have been great to have had the bike to ride around there with all the elevation they have there.

Vacation...well, we kind of figure that out super last minute.  Like our honeymoon for example.  We went to Seattle/Victoria/Vancouver last year.  That was an awesome trip.  Lots of moving around, but very fun.  We are thinking some place warm, like Aruba for our honeymoon.  We are looking for a low key place to relax, but where we can venture out safely.  The catch is that it has to have awesome fresh food.  That's a must for vacations for me.  Anyone have suggestions?!

We are actually looking at going to that area too and we are probably going to be doing it last minute as well.  We are more likely to go to Nags Head or Kitty Hawk area though.  Possibly around the end of July.  And then Lis is thinking Fla on the Gulf side somewhere.  Who knows what we'll do!?!?!  Maybe I'll just barge in on Warren at his lake cottage?

Wow, that was a preemptive strike!  That stroke looks pretty solid all around from where I sit.

Head position is interesting to me in that I think this is one part of the stroke which can be really different in open water vs/ the pool, even when the open water is calm.  I would assume that's from having the line to stare at versus having to site to go straight, but it's something I've noticed in watching videos of pool swimming vs. open water swimming.

Anytime Dirk.  We're there every weekend from now until October, so just call when you get to the Marina if it's a weekend.  If you come during the week you'll need to call ahead unless you have a boat license, then I'll tell you where we hide the key!

And when you run Boston, you've got a few sherpas ready to go.

That's right!  Can't wait.  Boston 2013 is on my calendar.  I'll be there if you're running it.

Today, I did a swimming test to get my T-pace.  I've never been able to do the 3X300 with 30 sec rest between each without either taking a longer rest or fading terribly during each of the 300's.  This is major progress!  I think I can actually do some real swim workouts now! Laughing

Such awesome news!  Swimming takes SO much patience.  It's great to hear you sticking to it.  It will take time, but it becomes really enjoyable when you get there.  Keep at it and keep us posted.  3 x 300 is no joke, so that's really great.

Felt really good this morning and was up early to swim and run. My legs are back to normal and I was looking to put in a hard workout. I decided after getting to the pool (I always ride my bike there) to do a brick. The weather was decent and my day off tomorrow is going to be spent in a meeting with chefs, so no real training for tomorrow.

I put in 30 minutes on the swim. I never really count laps or time them. I just set an amount of time to swim and do it. I got out dried off and hit the bike. I did one of my easier rides with some rolling hills and one small climb. 17 miles and at a 20.2 mph average. With about 5 miles left before getting home I decided to round out the morning with a run when I got there. I threw the bike in the house and got into my running gear. I pushed out a 1 hour run at a 9:56 average for 7 miles. Running is by far my worse, but I really hung in there, telling myself after each mile "One more mile."

I feel good today. I guess you could call it my own little race.

When I got home my wife was up having her coffee. She asked where I was and I told her. As usual she just shook her head. LOL I think I finally have gotten through to her to get some motivation and come out with me and ride. She told me she wants a bike for her B-Day this month. I was happy as hell until she said she wanted a beach cruiser. lol  Oh well, I told her we will ride and I won't take off on her. it was just nice to hear she was interested in sharing something I love to do.

Ha ha, this made me laugh. My husband and I used to ride hybrids together before I got into triathlons. He was more recreational about it and it drove me crazy!!!!!! I was always riding as hard as I could to try to get a hard workout in and he was just cruising. You are a lot nicer than I am .

Good job on your triathlon of 1 today!

I really hope this gives you some relief.

The wetsuit I ordered arrived today so I took it to my friends pond for a trial swim.

I could barely squeeze myself into it. This fit is already totally different than my old wetsuit and all I did is try to put my feet in. I had to fight to get it over my calves. It was 88 degrees outside here today so now I'm sweating and barely have the suit to my knees. I used the plastic bags to slide my feet in and the suit is soo tight the plastic bags were stuck inside the suit! I looked at my training friend and she is just laughing at me saying how she has never seen me fight with clothes that are too tight. It must have taken a full 15 minutes for me to squeeze myself into this suit. Finally we get it up over my hips, my arms slide in no problem and it still zips pretty easily across the back so there is a little hope for me. I just can't barely walk into the water because it is so tight on my legs. My old suit just slides on, I don't need to use the bags or anything so this is all new to me.

I get in and swim one lap and feel like total garbage. Fighting the suit again. So I stop and let more water in at the neck, wiggle it around a little and try again. This lap was much better. I do the same thing one more time, swim a lap and start to feel much better. Finished out with a total of 14 laps around the pond - I have no idea how far this is but it is not a very big pond. I think it will work out but I need to find something to help this suit slide on a little easier! The best part is, even though it is tight in the legs, the torso length is good so no more riding up! Sometimes it's the little things.

Oh, and at least I couldn't really feel the little fish bighting me with the wetsuit on .

Dina, lol at the wetsuit, wish U had video taped it...lol  Hope U enjoy it.

Vero, good luck w/ the back and get back to running, don't need to go into DT's.

OwlGirl, congrats on the swim.

CaGolddigger, GREAT w/o, that is awesome!  Get the wife a bike.  I'm talking mine into getting one.  She has the running part down, loves to swim but is just weak on the bike.  I told her road bikes are so much better than the old single gear. wide tire bikes she used to ride...lol

Dirk and Jeff, thanks for the swim advice...I swam again yesterday and it is geting a little better, still not ready for a tri but at least making some progress.

Ya'll have a GREAT w/o

Oh, and at least I couldn't really feel the little fish bighting me with the wetsuit on .

All I know is that it's a good thing triathlons start so early in the morning.  You will rarely be sweating at 7am when you are getting it on for a race...although I've had a few times when this was the case and it makes it twice as hard.

As for your legs and it being so tight, you can consider cutting the bottom of the legs a little bit.   This is only called for if the very lowest part of the leg (where it's narrowest) is part of the problem getting it on.  If you turn it inside out at that point and look at the seam there's about an inch or so where the seam is 'taped'.  you can cut back in to the taped area without problems, just leave some of that tape there to hold the seam tight.  But if the tightness you are struggling with is in large part further up on the leg, that doesn't help you.

I'm glad you found out the value of letting water in to relax the wetsuit.  Next time spend more time getting water in there.  Try to get a quart of water inside the suit and then stand up and walk out of the water to encourage it to move downward toward the legs.

Isn't it a good thing swimming is first?  Can you imagine reversing a triathlon and trying to use a wetsuit on the swim!??!?!

Tony, I would propose we call it a victory if your month over month totals increase.  Set that as a goal through out the season.

I'll catch you all on swimming and biking in the coming months!

Man I got toasted in April on mileage: bike = 91.....run=94.........swim=3700yds...... Having 2 weeks where I slowed down, 1 for taper and 1 for recovery put a damper on the totals! May will be much better,

April totals:
S: 17300.00 Meters
B: 204.00 Mi outdoors,  10h 54m indoors
R: 149.10 Mi

Who beat me?  Dirk?  Jonathan?

Jeff you really threw the gaunlet down here, I love it although I am not anywhere in the same league as you guys this should be pretty interesting to see how you guys measure up to each other.

I wasn't close overall, but I got you on the run!

B:  5h 55m 44s indoors

Props to you!  I'm going to have to step up my running volume to keep up with you.  I can't have a quadzilla-ex-hockey-player out running me!

Tony, I would propose we call it a victory if your month over month totals increase.  Set that as a goal through out the season.

Jeff, that sounds good to me and that definitely is the plan and will be one of my goals for the rest of this season. Also I couldn't agree more with Warren on progression being tied to improved fitness.  This being my first season I was beginning to wonder how you guys managed to do all this stuff and I am amazed that by amount of time and effort everyone here puts in. It certainly helps to keep me motivated seeing what you guys do and gives me hope that if I keep working I can get there too.
