Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() skibummer - 2012-08-30 8:21 PM Half mile swim/ 10K run/ Half mile swim. Just a few more weeks left of OWS around here. Felt really good on the run, but I'm afraid that I may have run one too many miles before the HM. There are big letters spelling TAPER on my calender on this past Monday. Hard to taper when I don't feel my mileage was up where it should have been in the first place. My taper will start this Monday. I will do a few days of half mile runs to keep from getting stale. I'm just going to swim like crazy until the race to preserve my legs (knee). One of my goggle straps came off my head during the swim today and floated in front of my sight, which gave me a huge panic because I thought it was a little water snake. EEEK!! Didn't ruin my swim, I just figured it out and re-strapped. Now to try out my brandy new yoga mat. Oh man, that makes me laugh! I freak out at the THOUGHT of creepy crawly things in the water!!! Ha ha ha! I would be so DONE. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() http://runningtimes.com/Print.aspx?articleID=19258 VERY good article about running 5ks. By a 5k specialist. 5ks are fun, and everyone SAYS... I'm just going to have fun or This isn't serious, I just want to take part or or or Fact is... a lot of runners, particularly NEW runners treat the race like it's EASY... and they expect to do better each time... well... as many of us find out... improving on a 5k time, once you get in decent shape is HARD. Not anymore!! follow this recipe and PR your next 5k. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() stephsprint - 2012-09-02 12:41 PM http://runningtimes.com/Print.aspx?articleID=19258 Thanks for the article on 5K's- last week I ran my final fun run 5K for beer- I can run really fast for beer. Yesterday I set all kinds of PR's for myself and ran 14.3mi! It was my last long run before half marathon in 2 weeks. It felt pretty good up until the last 5 miles- I took more walking breaks there, and the final mile I gunned it because I was so ready for this to be over- it took 3 hours! Later last night, I took dd to her first concert- Big Time Rush- just happy I could still walk, a bit achy but not too bad. I am resting today- may take the bike out with dd for mother-daughter bonding time, or a bit of yoga- and a lot of stretching LOVE the race reports- good job everyone! School is back in session- I start swim class this week too. I will be happy when the HM is over so I can return to my spinning again Take care all Bridget

![]() ![]() | ![]() ANOTHER 1 mile OWS. Went out too hard on the first half, settled down on the second. Swallowed a lot of water on the backstretch, but remained calm. The muscles are screaming at me right now. I can't believe just a few months ago I was struggling to make 100 yards continuous crawl. I hope I don't lose form through the Winter. What I really like is the muscles it develops. I'm already searching for exercises to keep/improve the muscle strength and tone. Then a 2K run to keep the heart and legs going. I got home after and my wife says "You should go take the dog running" but I had to tell her I'm trying not to run too much. I have to try some Body Glide before the HM (9/8) so I don't do anything new on race day. |

YOU ROCK!!!!! You've killed the swim, nice work. Going out really fast and then surviving is really a good way to do it. It lessens the chance you'll be in the back eating toes and being boxed about the ears. As long as you can sight, and stroke, it's ok to glide and pull and breathe every other stroke. If you've every watched the pros they are sucking air the ENTIRE swim. |

If we had better emoticons I would use the tiny smiley face with the gianormous screen popping, 3D in your face thumbs up. instead you get this one. Barely 100yards to a continuos mile is a big accomplishment and you should be proud. Good Luck on your race. You got this one.! |

Thanks Steph, I will follow this after my turkey trot in November. I want to see what gains I have from last year and earlier this year before I alter any training. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Two more days until HM. ANOTHER 1 mile OWS this afternoon. Water is getting C-C-C-C-C-COLD. This one was tough. Felt tired at the half way point. Was wondering if I was going to make it, but pulled it together and finished strong. I blame this on not being able to do any more intervals in the pool. Straight distance swimming is cool, but intervals really do work. Next season I'm going to ladder (or pyramid) interval like crazy. Going to do a mile run tomorrow after packet pick-up to keep the legs moving. Stand-by for race report. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I've been sick and it has been no fun. No workouts... and I have an Olympic this weekend. SO I was going to blow it off... then a friend said she knew a guy who would do the run portion. Hm. So then another wanted to do the swim! So I'm going to just do the 20 mile bike... unfortunately it's 2 laps so I have to climb the causeway 78 feet 4 times. Oh well, I'm sure I can get through it. I'm so glad there are people depending on me or I'd skip it. My first Tri-Relay! I do not know either of these guys, so it could be funny. I told the runner guy I will have a tough ride, and he said "just get to me before they start picking the cones up, we'll be fine!" SHOW UP. My new motto. THis means the Miami Man in November will be my first Olympic distance by myself. TODAY i got my first Invisalign teeth straightening trays. In one year I should have straight white teeth. I'm pretty excited! I also got a free iPad and while it is beautiful I don't really know what to do with it! |

Sorry you aren't well- but great that you feel well enough to show up! Riding a bike makes me feel like a kid, channel your inner kid on the bike! The invisalign sounds cool too- Can you drink coffee with them in? It is too dark to run outside- went to Y yesterday to do treadmill- I run slower on the treadmill, not sure why. Fall is here. HM is in 9 days... Bridget |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck tomorrow Skibumm. Looking forward to the race report. Steph, My wife is doing invisiline and the results are A-mazing. I will say, the year time frame will most likely be off, so dont be disappointed if they stretch it out some. It will be almost two years by the time my wife is done. A few other people I know ran into the same thing when they got towards the end, they had to redo the sets and extend the time. Good luck on Sunday |

Bridget, I run slower on the treadmill too. My theory is that the treadmill forces you to run a constant pace and my body normally varies the pace for my entire run. So I am thinking the steady pace is an unnatural force that wears my body down making my run slower. Either that or the speeds are always off on treadmills. You are not supposed to eat anything with the liners in, but water is allowed. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() It's official: I can now put a 13.1 sticker on my truck. SOOO much fun. A well organized race. At certain intervals there were people playing music. The atmosphere was so relaxed and encouraging at the same time. The best part was that my wife and kids met me at a several spots during the race (They were supposed to be at soccer). That really gave me a smile and some energy. Firstly, let me get it out of the way that I had to pee since mile 2, but couldn't find a spot to go for the entire run. I held a 10:00/mile pace until mile 9. I talked to a lot of people, and saw a few people I knew who were safety patrolling on bikes. At mile 7-9 it was hill hell, but I didn't even notice and that's where I started passing people. Mile 9 started on a down hill, and I really opened it up. From there on out, the passing game was on. I felt great and was FLYING through runners left and right. So at mile 11.5 I started thinking "Umm...it's starting to catch up to me" but then some kids were jamming a cool song on their instruments and that carried me through. And when I started hurting again, there were my wife, kids, and Sis in Law to cheer me on. I held on really strong and zipped through the finish in 1:58:39. A full 12 minutes faster than I anticipated. 9:05 pace/128th out of about 1000ish/9th in my age group (WHOA!!). At mile 10 I was thinking that a sub 2 hr was possible, but kept going back and forth about actually achieving it. Couldn't have had a better time. Next year I will train better. I think I'm hooked on HM, but this was also a dry run for a possible 70.3 attempt next August. EditToAdd: time prediction correction Edited by skibummer 2012-09-08 3:23 PM |
