Nicely done Jason! I read your race report. I think you handled the mechanical issues (that are out of our control) great - between the power tap and the garmin. You take it as the day give it

Last night I had tri #3 - well, it actually turned into a du because of thunder and lightning. Instead of the 400 yd swim, we ran 1.2mi. This is the same swim I blew two weeks ago and was looking forward to some redemption. Oh well, there's always next week. Rain actually stopped just in time for the start. Cue the mosquitoes though. OMG I ITCH SO MUCH TODAY!

And of course, my results are missing from coolrunning - but I think there are a bunch missing because my garmin data would put me dead last. And I know I didn't win but I wasn't the last one off the course either My bike time got 2 minutes faster so I was psyched. At least I have my Garmin data to send the organizers. DERP.

Happy Wednesday all. Carry on and have a good day.

So, I'll start this a little early.  Anyone racing this weekend?  First Oly of the season and it's a doozy with lots of climbing on the bike and big hills on the run!

I'm beginning to feel a little like I live in Calgary (no disrespect for what you're going through).  We have had so much rain that many of our freeway exits are under water, same for side streets.  Had to cancel a trip to Chicago because I wasn't 100% certain I could actually get there.  Where is my nice warm dry summer???

Randee-good job on the shortened race. Nice improvement on the bike!

I've always found the tri community to be very helpful and welcoming with new participants. I enjoy meeting new people while setting up transition and seeing them during and after the race. Regardless of whether its your first race or your 50th everyone faces challenges they are trying to conquer or overcome in order to finish. I can only think of a handful of times when someone has not seemed to be interested in a cordial chat prior to a race and I think that was probably due to nerves or being really focused on the race.

Looking ahead to the weekend....anyone racing?

Well, now I know we have at least one racer! Sorry I missed that before I posted.

Swim at lunch then run this evening for me.

Here's a question for the group. We are almost halfway through the calendar year. How do you feel about your training and/or racing at the halfway point? I know some of you are just getting into race season and training will not peak until later on but in the big picture at this point in the year/season how do you feel.  As a guideline maybe we can put a 1-10 number on it.  1 being extremely dissappointed/discouraged and 10 being over the moon ecstatic with everything. Elaborate a little if you will about what you are satisfied with and what has been discouraging to give us a full picture.  I'll chime in later on.

Funny you should ask because I've been thinking about it quite a bit.  I'm a little worried about where I am in my training given IM is a little over 2 months away.    I feel behind.  I've had some health issues we're trying to work through and our weather has been awful which has limited my ability to do OWS or ride outside the way I normally do.  There are mornings I wake at 3am freaking out and I'm not a first timer.  I've also yet to race which adds to the tension.  I'd say I'm a solid 6 on the scale.

I guess on average I'm a 5 because some days I'm psyched over the top that I accomplished something and on the next I'm frustrated that I can't get a handle on this leg pain so I can't get in any real run training.

Is your PT providing any insight?

I was set free in April. It's not the same as before - I'm sure this is muscular and probably a function of weak hips or knees so I'm starting to focus on strengthening those. We'll see if it gets to the point where I pick up the phone again.....

I had knee issues after a Thanksgiving 10k last year and I hobbled my half marathon in December due to it. I decided to go to a knee specialist to get it done. My x-rays looked good and all he did was give me an injection into the knee which worked for about 3 weeks. I decided to go to a PT and he figured out that it was a muscular issue. After two sessions with him I was all fixed up ... long story short ... I think most of our issues with knees are due to muscular imbalances. I am now doing functional strength training with him once a a week and feel better than ever. I am almost pain free for now for 6 months.

I'd say 6. I'm happy with the swimming training and generally feel like I will be able to 'get around' my A race which is an Oly at the beginning of Aug (which until 6 weeks ago I wasn't even sure I should enter.
But life has got on the way so much lately that I haven't been able to run and even less bike anywhere near as much as I would like, feel like I'm playing catch up.

I think I'm sitting at about 8. Which is about as good as it's likely to get. I'm mostly feeling quite confident, with a week and a half before my A race. I know my training has been better this year than last year, and I've also been a lot less stressed (mostly because I have a bit more idea what to expect, and am not just following the "more is better" panicked approach that I used last year). But because I feel like I've improved I'm expecting to do a lot better, and that puts the pressure on... So we'll see shortly...

I have four tris scheduled for the year, and did my first last week. I've got another sprint on July 20th, an Oly in early September and the HIM in late Sept. Since this is my first season of training, I'm really not sure what training is really supposed to look like, but I'd say that my 'number' for how I feel depends on the discipline.

I feel the most behind with my running, which may seem odd because I ran a full marathon on March. Even with a marathon under my belt, I don't feel like a good runner. My full marathon time was 4:54:12 and my HM times range in the 2:12-2:20 range. I pretty much run 10-11 minute miles (tempo runs during marathon training were in the 9 min/mile range). When I started training for tri, I put the running on the back burner for a good 6 weeks and mainly swam and biked. I lost so much of the running stamina that I had, so much so that to run 6 miles now takes me an eternity and is REALLY hard. I'd give my run training a '3' right now, but I've started nipping that issue in the bud starting this week. It WILL get better. I think my biggest issue with running is that I tell myself that I can walk when I'm tired. I need to find that place between my ears that forces me to just slow my pace, but KEEP running/jogging. Run--3

Swimming...to go from NEVER swimming laps to trying to swim 1500 yards has been tough. I really have made great gains since I started swimming in March, though. I find swimming to be hard work, but I've really enjoyed the process thus far. My biggest issue with swimming has been figuring out swimming in a wetsuit (which I'll have to do for the HIM). I HATE my full wetsuit. I ordered a sleeveless just this week in the hopes that it'll make that aspect better, but I realize I have to practice, practice, practice in it, and many of the OWS areas that we have are warming up enough that wetsuits are a bit of overkill. I'd give my swim training a 7.

Bike--After swapping out my stock seat on my bike for a split nose Bontrager, my cycling training has improved a ton. I've already been on several 40+ mile rides (though my training plan only has me riding 90 minutes at this point in time) and the bike is the one area where I actually feel ahead of the game. I feel confident on my bike, I'm getting more and more time on the aero bars, and I'm getting faster. The only issue I have with the bike is rain. I do NOT like riding when it's raining (traffic and wet roads). Regardless, I'd give my bike training an 8.5 at the moment.

I am putting myself right at a 6 for now.

Looking at the power file from the bike, there is much room for improvement.

I know I can go faster in the swim.

As usual, I am pretty satisfied with my run fitness.

I have been talking with my wife about resetting my goals/priorities in triathlon. The long term goal is to qualify to go to Kona but my performance this weekend showed me how far away I am. The rest of this season is about building and having fun. I will get faster and better but I am going to focus a little more on enjoying the ride.

Right now, I feel like maybe a 4.  Increased travel schedule has made it tough to do high quality workouts -- and then when I'm back home, I want to spend time with family rather than doing 2 hour rides.   The last few times running, my head hasn't really been in it, and I've had to curtail the workout.   Swim training has been close to non-existent.    Not great.

But if I step back for some perspective -- and think about where I was at the beginning of the year... I've accomplished a lot.   Finished a HM in a pretty good time.   Broke the 1-hour mark for a 10K.    Finished an Oly.   Conquered (I hope) open-water swimming.  Bike speeds and endurance way up.  No injuries.   Weight down nearly 20 pounds since Jan 1.   Kids are starting to learn from our example -- now the 3-year-old runs laps up and down the driveway, and the 6-year-old talks about "playing triathlon".   That feels like an 8.

So -- to sum it up -- I'm glad you asked the question, because I feel a heckuva lot better now.  Smile

Scott - your post made me smile. It's so easy to get focused on what's in front of us and not look at the bigger picture. One of the things that motivates me to keep my lifestyle active and healthy is the thought that we're contemplating starting a family, and what kind of person I'd want to be for my kids. I love that your kids are learning from your example, and hopefully that will help to motivate you to keep it going.

Scott-that is a great post! Sometimes we focus only on where we are now and not on how far we have come or the accomplishments along the way. Excellent perspective.

I was up early for a 2000 swim now I'm headed out of town for the day. Back this evening with a bike workout on the schedule. I have not answered my own question about where I am at this point of the year/season. Will put it together tonight.

Have a good day everyone....the weekend is right around the corner.

morning all. I had time for a swim before my haircut this am but I'm totally bummed that my leg still aches and the weather is crappy and I just didn't feel like getting up.

SO now that I'm up, I'm calling the dr to make an appt to get this figured out.

Have a good day all - I'll keep you posted as I'm sure I won't be able to get in for like 2 weeks. **grumble**

Having nothing to compare it to I would say I'm a six I need to get better in the swim, and on the bike I always feel like my legs give out before my lungs, I'm pretty sure that means I need to ride more. As far as the run goes I hated running until I started my training and now I look forward to my morning runs. I only have one race under my belt thus far and was thrilled with the result. So all in all I'm very pleased.

It's my first year in the sport, thus, I have nothing personally to compare it with but I have made some great gains in the swim and the bike area. I had to essentially relearn how to swim and I'm still learning. I can, however, swim for miles nonstop and that is a real confidence builder to work from. Now it's constant work and technique and increasing the pace.

My bike experience has been such fun. I've enjoyed almost every minute I've been on my bike with the exception of my race flats last week. I need to get some input on training with specific goals in mind, but I have gone from an average training pace of 14 mph to almost 20 mph. That seems to translate into 18 mph pace during races. Thus, I have to keep increasing my training pace and I need work in order to accomplish that goal. Riding just doesn't seem like work though.

My run has suffered somewhat this year. I ran alot starting in the spring of 2012 and had an average pace during training of around 8:23 at my peak. With the addition of the other sports and the need to back down on the miles, the pace has dropped to the 8:50 range and during races it's a real struggle.

Finally my rating. Swim 7, Bike 8, Run 5, Overall Score 7

Just got in from riding the Augusta HIM course with a group of my tri gal friends. Had a great ride, though it was ridiculously hot and humid and as we turned for home (16 miles to go), the wind started blowing in a storm. The storm didn't get us, but the headwind coming in was pretty rough.

I still can't imagine running 13.1 miles after all that!

I did have some extra 'motivation' right around mile 50. There's a busy 4-lane that we have to ride back into town (Sand Bar Ferry Road) and we've been finding that the people who live out that way are getting pretty sick of the cyclists "taking up THEIR roads." We were riding single file on the right side of the right lane when some a&&hat in a big noisy truck gets right behind us, blasts the horn, revs the engine and then blasts by us. Jerk. There wasn't even anyone in the left hand lane when he got behind me. When he hit the horn, I just took over a bit more of the right hand lane.

Checking in:

I've been in San Diego this week visiting my son. I've been logging in both running and swimming and enjoying myself immensely. I am amazed at the numbers of people exercising in San Diego. Today I swam at a pool divided into a dozen lanes, each with 2-3 swimmers per lane. Everyone was so courteous and circle swimming was seamless. All levels and abilities. This was a salt water pool. Nice to get a break from chlorine. Now off to the zoo for the rest of the day. Jim

Survived a really hard bike workout this evening. UGH! It was 90 degrees with a heat index of 97. I have 3 fans surrounding me in my garage and still managed to leave a huge puddle of sweat.  Summers are tough here in the South.......where did March go?

Looking at my season/year so far is really two different things. My race season started in late March and Eagleman was my 6th race on June 9th. 4 sprints and 2 HIM. So, while the year may be half over my season is probably 2/3 of the way complete in terms of number of races. The remaining races will be olympic and sprint distances. I've met several of the goals I outlined at the beginning of the year and there are several that will not be determined until later in the year. Fortunately, I feel that I am on track to meet thes other goals. So, in terms of my race season so far I would rate it an 8.5.

Training has gone well and I have been able to bounce back from a calf problem that kept me from running early in the year. Volume for swim, bike and run are about what I expected. I'd give s/b/r each a 7.5. I've made some progress in each area but really don't feel like I've had a breakthrough in any of the 3.

So, I guess I'm at an 8. Would love to see that be higher by the end of the year.

How did you do that? How long did it take you?

I don't know about Dave but, I do it by switching to mostly downhill routes.
