Way to go everyone!  This was my first 70.3 as well.  I had a conservative goal of sub 6 hours, and an aggressive goal of 5:30.  I finished in 5:25.  Very happy with the result!  Some of my personal obstacles were -  leaky goggles the entire swim, bike computer not working (have no idea why) so rode based on HR and mile markers, self dehydration on the run (shouldn't have taken that last metasalt capsule).

Overall, a good experience.  I think the organizers did a good job with logistics of the race and the venue was solid.  Anyways, congrats to all you finishers!

Enjoy the recovery, we've earned it!

Hi all,

Not sure how many are still following this thread.  I plan to race in 2013 and wondered about hotels.  Any suggestions?

I'm also thinking about renting a bike.  Doesn't seem to be a service to ship my bike.  Anyone rent a bike?

Thanks,

Duane

I'm still listening!

On hotels, there is nothing at or even close to the race site. If the race does not do any official hotels, your closest hotels will be clustered along I-35 North, about 10 minutes away by car. The good news...you'll find every flavor of hotel there, along all kinds of restaurants.

On your bike, I cannot help you much on rentals. But I would contact Jack and Adam's, because I am certain they can set you up with a quality rental, and they might be able to receive your bike in a shipment. These folks know tris, sponsor a lot of local events, were at the expo in 2012 and can likely help you out. http://www.jackandadams.com/

Good luck, Duane.

Thanks everyone for all the info, good stuff!

Does this event sell out early?  I saw that someone waited until a few days before the event in 2010 and still got in.  I won't know my work schedule until a couple months before the race this year but really want to do this one.  Anyone have any advise?

This is going to be my first 70.3 as well! Training starts this week. I'm already nervous about the heat. Maybe I should be nervous about the road conditions, too, but it's hard to believe it could be much worse that some of what we ride on in New Mexico. Anybody think about using a road bike instead of tri bike? Is it that bad?

Well, the first week of training is going well. I am doing the Oly to HIM Bridge plan. It is still far enough in the future I'm not panicking yet!

Are we the only ones doing Austin this year? I got my hotel reservations made this week. Had a bike workout today that involved 10 X 2 min hill climbs and it was brutal in the heat (had to do it at lunch time because of my work schedule). Then of course I had to tell myself to quit whining because it will probably be a bit toasty at the race.

I'm signed up for this race. I asked about the road conditions and this is the response I received:

April Dickerson, Jul 22 10:58 am (CDT):
Hello Alfred,

Thanks for reaching out. We work closely with the county public works and the cracks will be repaired in advance of the event. We do not repair them this far in advance because they could open back up before race day. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any additional questions- have a great day!

Best,

April Dickerson

My training is going well I think. It's not a traditional training plan. I've been running marathons for the past 3 years and just started triathlon training this month. The past couple of weeks has been focused on swimming. Yesterday, I did a one mile open ocean swim; so I am now confident that I can do the swimming and running segments. Now I am going to focus on cycling. Plan to do bricks in the month of September, then start tapering in October.

You sound ready now! It will be my first HIM, so I'm nervous. I've got a lot of mileage to build up between now and Oct. 27th...

I'm now considering this one. I did BSLT 70.3 about a month ago and it felt weird not having much else scheduled for the rest of the year, plus quite a few club mates are doing Austin this year. So I'm slowly talking myself into it. I suffered a hip injury (while ice skating with my 7 year old, no less) and just need to confirm that I can start running again pain free soon.

I figured I had better jump in an say I am "likely" in. I did Galveston HIM this April as my first HIM. It was great. I had an ITB issue during my training but backed down on the running, adjusted the aero bike fit and pressed on. I did plan no other races this year but my tri training partner is pulling me in.

That's what happened to me, my friend/training partner signed up and I decided if I was going to do it, I wanted company!

Qak, congratulations on signing up for the HIM your first year. It's taken me a while to go for it, and I'm pretty sure I'll go back to short course after this race, but I think it will be fun to try it. I have a local race at the end of August that is between an Oly and HIM distance, so hopefully that will be a good practice run for me.

Anyone have any opinions on this course? I have read less than favorable reviews from the 2 transitions to horrible roads. Thanks

Hi all. Just to update on my training. I've done the full distance of each leg on back-to-back days. My plan to do bricks last month got de-railed when I took a new job across the country.

Had to sell my house in California, then drive across the USA to Virginia. Still in the process of closing on a new house. Then I have to get my household goods delivered and unpacked. It's been a busy time.

I know I can do a marathon in 5 hours, so I'm hoping I can do this half-Ironman in around 6. I'm slow, but I'm confident I can finish. Now I have to worry about being furloughed as I'm a government employee.
