The Zoots were sent to me from a sports marketing group in Newport Richey, FL who sponsors me.  Mizuno has been the shoe of choice over the past 3 years, however, I think they struck some deal with Zoot.  I feel that the Zoots will sit in my closet and collect dust the way my feet feel this morning. i dont even want to try them on the treadmill.  I have a feeling the people in the gym would laugh at me anyways with the solid yellow and blue trim color of the shoes.

Just riding a mountain bike these days, have not graduated to anything else.  Will do my first sprint tri this summer with the mtn bike and then decide my next steps.  If I get hooked after my first event, I will be in the market for a road bike or more specific tri bike.

The Oil Patch
Subject: RE: whiskyride

I am 38 years old and a 10+ year veteran of the United States Air force. In 1997 I had a head on collision with a drunk driver which broke 2 of my vertebrae L4 and L5 in my lower back. Seemed like after that is when I started putting on the weight but the real gain was yet to come. In 2001 while doing a Military Exercise, in Kunsan Korea, I was in another accident involving my back again; only this time I lost all feeling in my lower half of my body. I just knew it was over for me and I fell in a spell of great depression.

I did later recover completely after surgery but due to complete inactivity the weight really piled on and continued to for the next 9 years. On Jan 1 2010 I made a promise to myself that I would make a change and lose that injury that I wore around my neck like a medal. I signed up for the 3M Half Marathon to be run later that same month. I told everyone I knew and some I didn’t to create some accountability and tried to exercise but felt like people were laughing at the fat guy running on the road. I limited my running to certain times of the day and NEVER went to the GYM. I learned who the hinderers and enablers were in my life and surrounded myself with enablers.

Race day came and by pure determination alone I managed to run the entire thing only stopping to pop a blister I had picked up along the way. I was hooked!  This year I will run the same races, with the exception of adding the Buffalo Springs 70.3, I did last year with the idea that I am racing the fat guy from last year. 2011 is looking good for me.

This is absolutely amazing. Not that you need me to tell you this, but you should be incredibly proud of yourself. It's stories like yours (and everyone's here) as to why I joined this group. It's totally inspirational. Thank you!

I designed my own program with the custom training program option here on the site. It has me swimming 900yds as my medium swim this first week. That seems like a lot. My race swim distance is 656yds. I have a triathlete friend here at school that has agreed to help me with the swimming. I am just wondering if you could tell me the reasoning behind why such great distances during training? The schedule doesn't have me starting with 6 mile runs or 20 miles biking and continuing to increase. I am going to do my best, but swimming that distance right now is going to be rather timely for me.

I think a mountain bike is a good start.  you don't want to make it a stressful sport by spending a bunch of cash right off the bat.  Like I said, I love Trek so have to say, you can't go wrong there.  :-)

As i said to laurie, good call on starting with a mountain bike.  if you get to the point of upgrading, becareful jumping straight to a tri bike -- depends on how and where you ride if it's the route to go, but first steps first...

I don't knowwhat's going on with the swim - something is wrong there. a typical first week swim for a sprint distant training program is 200 yards -- one time the first week, 200 yards 2x the second week, 200 yards, then 300 yards the third week -- you aren't swimming 900 yards until week 8 or an 11 week program.  can you pdf the plan, or somehow get me a copy of it?

I have a file attached to this post. Hopefully that works and you can see it. I am going to put this plan on my own calendar, so I can change the swimming parts with whatever recommendation you have as far as a starting point and an increase amount.

The run and bike are right on track, but for whatever reason the swim is the equivalent to a 1/2 iron man training plan.  can you redo the customized plan, making sure you didn't accidently put in an extra 0 behind the swim distance?  if it still comes up with ridiculous swim amounts, I will change it for you.  at this point, you should only be doing one swim a week of 200 yards.

I tried again with my race target of 656yds but the plan came out the same. With the minimum distance the tool allows as a target swim (200yards), the new attached plan is what comes of it. If that looks decent as far as training goes, I can follow it that way (it still starts with 300yds, progresses to a maximum of 600yds). Or would be happy to take whatever other recommendation you have for my swim training (or my training program in general).

The book I told you I was reading has some advice on creating a personal training plan but it revolves around the use of a heart rate monitor that I currently don't have or foresee having in my near future. Which was something else I wanted to ask you, do you think it is an essential piece of equipment to training/being a triathlete?

Some of the other beginner sprint programs on the site looked good but with having 6 months, I liked the custom tool because it allows me to progress at a rate I think I am currently fit to handle.  I considered this one:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=262

but it has multiple work outs a day. Not that I don't have time for it, I just don't want to commit to that right now with juggling school/studying as well.

or this one:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=45

it's based on minutes spent training in each sport. Definitely more manageable with my schedule over the first like, but not my preference over the custom one.

Sorry, I know that's all a lot. I just want you to have all the info.

I am very glad to be a part of this group and extremely appreciative of your time and assistance. I would say this every time I post, but it might get old fast. So I just wanted to make sure I said it at least once.

Hi Deb, and everyone in the group. Thank you for letting me join.. I have missed being in a group for two years running :-)

I have not been able to give any input because of the largest cyclone/typhoon ever recorded crossed the coast just slightly to the north of me a few days ago. (Cyclone Yasi)
My city (Townsville) took an absolute pounding, and I have never been so scared in my life.. not an experience I want to go through any time soon again.
But on a lighter note.. managed to ride and swim this morning.. dodging debris on the bike, and swimming through the local pool that needs a good clean.

no worries on the questions, that is what I am here for.  I agree with you, go with the plan that you are most comfortable with.  i do recommend that on the non training days, throw in some little things to keep the fitness going -- like taking the stairs up a flight, or down a couple, parking a little farther away, etc.  only takes an extra minute or two, if even that because you aren't waiting for an elevator or circling the parking lot looking for that close spot.  I will take a look at the plan and make some changes to the swim -- will do it tomorrow as I have a scanner at work, not home.  -- will just print out what you have and change the swim.

regarding a heart rate monitor -- no, I don't think they are necessary (or even that important).  listen to your body, you are much better learning to pay attention to your body then relying on technology.  I had a heart rate monitor once and gave it away as it using it did not jive with my personality (I finished second in my age group in my last 1/2 marathon so you can do just fine without).  for some it is helpful, but no, definitely not needed.

Subject: RE: MissyW - and all others regarding gear
after writing the above, I thought -- well, that's my opinion, I'm going to check to see is Chrissie Wellington uses one.  here's from her top ten tips:

Performance tip #8: Develop a deep understanding of your own body
“People say how do you know how fast to go? I’ve trained at that pace I know I can sustain for X number of hours. Whether you train with a power tap or heart rate monitor or another device, that’s all well and good, but you need to be able to control your own effort and your own intensity and internalize that race pace so when you get onto the course you know what pace you can sustain. When everything’s hurting 30K into the marathon, no heart rate monitor is going to help you.

Performance tip #1: Passion gets you further than gear
“You’ve really got to be passionate and enjoy the sport and never lose sight of that. Amateurs sometimes get caught up in the minutia. You’ve got to have the latest bike and this, that and the other thing. You have to keep the love for the sport in mind.”

congrats on enduring.  being from the heart of america, i remember my first typhoon - at first I thought, wow, this is cool!  then it kept building and building and building.  i ended up sleeping in the bathtub.

i would say nasty on swimming in the pool, but then again, some races i have done have been pretty nasty water so cheers on the training!

Thanks for fixing up my plan for me. I'll check back for it tomorrow.

Also, I am glad to hear you don't think the heart rate monitor is a necessity. I was concerned my training wouldn't be right without it. Those are good other tips too. I will be sure to add a little extra activity where and when I can, especially on off days.

Hi Missy,
I didn't get a chance to do the write in on a pdf at work today - I had to work.    but, for this week, do one swim day, 200 yards.  next week will also be one swim day, 200 yards.  I will get it done this week.

even though the weather tries to kill you here every once in a while, it is quite a nice place.

here is where I do my swim training.. there is a 70 metre lap area, never crowded and totally free.

Hi, I live in napa, ca. It's been great weather and I've been taking advantage of it! Been running and am getting ready to join a master swim program locally then next will bike. Everything is falling into place. I have a friend who is doing an all women sprint in October and she is encouraging me to start there, but it doesn't matter to me as I am looking at this like I am competing with myself not any one else man or woman.

Hey Melissa,

I agree, i think the all women tri is the place to start -- it's not about who you are and are not racing against, but the truth is, if you are in one with men and your swim wave starts before the men, they really do swim over the top of you.  quite freaky if you are not a good swimmer and it's your first tri.  plus, 20 something guys are more likely to block you in on the bike and do things that they ought not do, but that ego gets going -- sorry, no offense guys and other than the swim, most are decent, but that's one less thing they have to deal with -- that said, these things are more likely to happen in the olympic distance v. the sprint.  at the end of the day, do the race you are excited about
