I don't know why your computer would hang up with my blog!  Maybe it's telling you not to check in on me!

I'm off to read a race report. Be back soon!

Shaun -

Read your race report - WOW!  What a day...only one thing...next time get the chick's phone # man...

Really, though, awesome job working through pain & dehydration!

Beth -

Don't know if this really counts, but I'm a true newbie.  My first 5k is coming up this Saturday.  Since I'm definitely not a runner, this is my birthday present to myself.  41 & active instead of getting old!

Hope everyone is having a great week!

I still consider myself a newbie since this is only my 2nd season of tris and 3rd season of running races and I will be 42 this summer!

Mac's HIM is impressive!  I am so impressed by people that can do those distances but have no desire to do them myself!!! I volunteer at Steelhead each year and know that I would rather be a volunteer at that distance than a competitor!

I have a 4 mile race this Monday that I'm doing with my youngest 2 boys (it benefits the Operation Santa here for the troops).

Have any of you figured out a way to stop letting life get in the way of training?

Re - Life v. Training:

I cheat & work 3 12-hour shifts each week as my real job.  The business I'm starting is pretty flexible in the hours.  But, overall, I work about 50 hours/week.

I've found the best way for me to keep the life/training balance was to get my husband interested.  While he's not training for a tri, he's going out with me for about 80% of my runs & bike rides.  We're lucky in that we tend to get ourselves interested in what the other person is doing.

Of course, on the days I work it's hard to get anything in.  I've been getting up early 1 day out of the 3 & trying to put strength training on another day (not my favorite!)

I've also set up some pretty serious accountability systems.  These are people to whom I report whether or not I've met my training schedule.  That's the real thing that keeps me on track, 'cause I'm not allowed to fail!

I'm interested to hear how everyone else stays on track.  Some days it's a real struggle!  Other days it's just downright FUN!

I made it through my first ever race!  It was only a 5k, but it was tons of fun!!!

My race report is up, so I'll leave you to read the details there.

I heard the best quote at the starting line from a fellow Adult Onset Athlete:

"I'm not here to race, I'm here to finish!"

It was actually perfect for our day & became the basis for my blog article that will be posted in the morning at http://ggwellness.blogspot.com

Hopeeveryone's weekend was wonderful...mine's perfect!

Hey all. I have been MIA and so freakin discouraged it is not funny. Hopefully today will be better. The surgery kicked my butt and I am going to have to change all of my training levels. No more than 45 minutes a day and I will have to be really carefull not to screw things up. So I am going to negotiate at todays and tomorrows Drs appointment on how far and how much I can do. Crap!!!

Hope you all are doing well.

Hope everyone is doing well this morning!  We have been painting the house (well, McFuzz has, I've been the moral support until it is at a point where I don't have to climb ladders) and now I need to weed the front flower garden.  The weather here is rather strange.  80s one day and 50s the next!

I'm wondering if we need to start setting weekly goals in order to get us (at least most of us--some are way motivate ) kickstarted?!!!!

Weekly goals would be great!

I will be MIA until Monday night. Travelling to Shaun's area to pick up my mom. (she lives up here in the summer- a true snow bird.) I fly down and drive her back. Gonna try to run and hopefully swim in that hot Fla sun.

According to the Doc I can do most anything  but no more than 45 minutes. ( I lost ALL battles with her). So, I am going to rework the training schedule and due 45 minutes each and every day (okay Monday is out cuz I will be driving Ms Daisy for 13 hours). But all other days... That is my weekly goal. I will check in Tuesday or maybe Monday evening. Hope you all have great weekends and lets see some goals!

I with you Beth... I DONT do ladders.

Looks like we lost some folks..

I am going to plug along here. So Beth and Shaun, lets see some goals!

I am trying to get picked back up after the surgery. So far seesms to be going okay. My goal(s) for this week is to attempt get my running time BELOW 12 minutes. Dang, I can walk that fast (slow). Second goal is to get at least two swim and two bike trainings in this week in addition to the runs. I will settle for any time in at this point!

My unannounced goal was to get on my new bike and get used to it.  I've done a couple of very short rides with success!!!  I'm hoping for a run today in between thunderboomers.  The twins have to work this afternoon at the pool, maybe.

I am one of the co-chairs for APO's 60th Anniversary to be held in October.  Anywho, the students all went home for the summer and didn't do their jobs before they left which has left me to do ALL of it myself.  Training will be very short and sweet, I'm afraid.  I also need to work on my lesson plans for this fall when I will be student teaching.

Today I have over 200 emails to add to the email account for the 60th and races to validate.  Oh, I should probably do some housework too!!!!

I hope everyone is pluggin' along.  It seems like summer should be the most optimable time to train as it it should be less busy but somehow it always is just as busy as the school year.  I know we all have races that we are training for but that shouldn't be our goal.  Our goal should be to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that we live long.propersous lives with our spouses and children.

Along those lines, I have started to change my eating habits as I am unhappy with my weight.  I have been for a while but now am ready to do something about it.  That means exercising on a regular basis.

Actually, I just signed up for my very first tri... wilminton, nc sprint. My palms are sweaty and I am wondering if I am a fool. Especially when I saw my age for the date of the race. Crap... I have no idea of how one of these things goes.... Well, learning curve, here I come!

You will do fine!!! The first one is always a little unnerving!  Something about the unknown!  Just remember that if you just do it you are further ahead than those who have chosen to do nothing.  I was 41 when I did my first one! I'm not very fast or good but at least I'm trying (I have to keep telling myself that).

My motto right now is "the last person across the line at a triathlon is called a triathlete".

So, on to hop on my bike at lunch and then to figure out how to change around the training program so is is no more than 45 minutes a day until the end of July (or so).

Weekly goals are a GREAT idea!  Thanks! & sorry I've been absent for a couple of days...working hard at my real job.Cry

This week's goals will be to:

  1. Get my 4 training sessions in!
  2. Swim in open water again (last time was really scary!)
  3. Break in my new tri suit (o.k., not really a goal - maybe a reward!)

I've got an insanely busy week -

  • Weds - prepare for coaching certification (study, final mentor practicum review, practice client sessions x2, & final class)
  • Thurs & Fri & Sat mini vacation w/family in St. Petersburg
  • Sun back to 12-hour shifts x3

With all that, it'll be a real challenge this week to train.  Wish me luck!

Okay, got a question. One of about a million to come later....

Got any good tips (or bad ones, heck I don't care) on how to get over fear of riding on the road? I had an unfortunate experience with a car once. It was deliberate on the part of the car. I thought I would be able to "just get back on the horse" and all would work out. Nope, not the case. I guess its the mind telling me that accidents are one thing, on purpose is another So... When I am riding I get so tense when there is traffic that I get dangerous to myself. Any tricks that anyone knows of that could assist? I fear the answer is JUST DO it, but I figure it never hurts to ask.

Timely question!  Fear & moving forward was actually the topic of my blog this week (http://ggwellness.blogspot.com).  There's a wonderful book that I would highly recommend - Feel the Fear & Do it Anyway by Dr. Susan Jeffers.

While your fear is biking on the road, my deal is swimming in open water, but they really are one in the same.  Fear holding us back from accomplishing our goals!

The best tip I've found is to push through the fear & take SMALL risks daily.  The key here is small, controllable risks.  These give you a continued sense of confidence based on mastery & the reality that nothing bad happened.

90% of what we worry about never happens, but 10% actually does.  Unfortunately, for you, you landed in the 10% category. Now that your 10% has happened, it's probably out of the way.

So, besides reading the book, I would suggest finding a nice wide road that has relatively little traffic, with a defined bike lane & riding 1or 2 miles on the road with a partner or a group.  Do this regularly, and as you find this tolerable, extend the mileage or change the road, anything to mix it up a little.

Keep moving forward & good luck.

Let us know how you're doing!

Kim

Hey, I never had a problem with icky slimy lake things until I read your blog. Today I got into the lake for the first time this year. WAAAYYY late for me. What did I think of... icky nasty lake things. but not for long... I love to swim. I think I was a mermaid in another life, or maybe a nasty icky lake thing. Anyway, your words of wisdom and your blog are right on for my road phobia. Unfortunately I live in the mountains with miles and miles of narrow curvy roads without bike lanes and with rednecks and tourons (tourists mixed with morons). The nearest 'safe' roads are at least 25 to 30 miles away so.... I am going to have to figure out how to just deal, I guess. Little steps will get me there. Thanks for the input!! I am going to get that book. Seems it may be one that would be handy to have on hand.

So, my goal for this week is to:

1) get at least 200 minutes in.

2) get my road bike on the road, if I don't have to take it to the shop. If I do, I will ride my MT bike on the road. (AAAGHH)) , Did I mention I HATE road biking???

Is anyone else out there??

I'm hoping to go for a bike ride or a run today.  Depends on what errands need to be done and such.  I'm planning on getting to the pool Tuesday and Thursday mornings this week.  This should be interesting as the pool is only ope for lap swim M-F from 5:30 am to 7:30 am and I seriously don't do mornings!!!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Ceildh,

If it means anything, I have this new road bike that I really wanted and now I'm deathly afraid to ride because it is so much faster than my mtn. bike.  I have to really force myself to go out on it!

Beth, it makes perfect sense.
When I take my Mnt bike out on the road it goes nice and slow and I also can make an off-road getaway if I should need to. Road bikes are sleek and fast. My dear sweet husband got my bike all road ready for me today and suggested (strongly) that Sunday morning would be a good time to start. Subtle but I think he wants me to get on the road.
