Member 24 | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon True, but since Grays Lake is essentially an offshoot of the Raccoon River, isn't there likely to be farm runoff there most of the time anyway? The point being how much is too much, and is it going to be significantly more than normal? I really don't know the answer, and I'm certainly not an expert in this field, but I'm trying to be optimistic (this time). |

Pro 3715 AZ | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon Hey, if the swim is safe to do, I will be the first one to cheer!! I really don't want to come 1,500 miles for a Duathlon either. BUT this is all out of our hands. The race officials are doing all they can to salvage it. So we just need to be patient and see what they decide to do. |

Word. I did Pigman a week and a half ago and it looks like Palo is now under threat from rising waters - if the race had been on a different weekend in June, it might not have gone down. I was thinking about doing Hy-Vee next year, and have been toying with the idea of going down to watch. Now I'm more hesitant to sign up for it. I really does suck to shell out 50+ bucks for a race plus travel to see it canceled. Plus setting up a training plan so that you peak for a given race and then have that race not go down would be really frustrating for me. Hopefully things will clear up and you guys will have a great race next weekend. I volunteered at Pigman. |

As for the volunteers, you guys were awesome! Seriously I've never seen so many people willing to stand in the sun so that other people could have a good time. Just out of curiosity, where were you stationed? As to Hy-Vee, I really hope they work things out so that you guys can race given all the time, money, and effort you've put into this thing. |

I was the guy on the out side of the rumbly part of the bike course - so when you were going up the hill - I was the last guy you saw and when you were coming back into the park, I was the first guy before the rumbles. |

I know where you are talking about: thanks for looking out for us! I remember that the rumbly stuff wasn't actually as bad to ride over as it looked, but it went on longer than I expected it to. |

Member 30 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon Finally a news organization is giving this coverage - on the evening news tonight, KCCI did a story about what's going on for Hy Vee. The gist of the story is nothing we haven't discussed here yet already. Hy Vee Corporate has a contingency plan, it could be moved t easter lake, etc. They did report that an announcement could be made by the 10:00 news tonight, or by tomorrow at the latest. Like I said, no real new info, but it least its getting coverage. |

Member 24 | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon Well it's official - KCCI reports a run-bike-run, based out of West Des Moines. That's 10K-40K-5K. I'm really not excited about running 9+ miles for this, but there's nothing we can do about it now. Rain, rain, go away... |

Champion 5868 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon Yeah - the site will be valley Southwods School - which is a 9th Grade Junior High. No details on the course yet. I will say that, in general, this will be a more hilly bike ride than the original course, just by where it is located and the fact that to the West of this location is Interstate 35. All of the route will have to go North or West first before it can go anywhere else. North will take it back to intersect with the original bke route, East will take it back towards downtown too. Valley Southwoods is on top af a hill, so coming home on the bike is going o be uphill. I'll try to lay the course out better when we get more details. Drew- good news is, that is very near the hotel I told you about. You will go from having a good hotel that is a distance away from the course to a good hotel tht is less than a mile or so from the course. Man, I'm so good to you |

Member 30 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon Well I guess the pros may not have to swim after all, see below: Good Morning, I just wanted to pass on the information that I have received about the Hy-Vee Triathlon. Due to the flooding and high bacteria levels, the Hy-Vee Triathlon will now be a Dry-Tri (Duathalon). ALL races will still go on at their scheduled times (Kids, Jr Elite, Elite, Age group). For the Elite and Age group, the distance will now be a 10K run / 40K Bike / 5K Run. I am not sure of the distances of the Kids or Jr. Elite yet. Due to the floods and all of the issues and emergencies this is creating, the City of Des Moines very much regrets not being able to hold the Dry-Tri in Des Moines. They need all of their man power to handle the flooding - which is VERY understandable. The City of West Des Moines has kindly agreed to host the event there. The location of the event will be at the corner of 35th Stree and Fuller - at the South Woods Freshman Highschool. The start, finish and transition areas will all be located near or in the schools parking lot. Race officials are still working on the courses for all of the events. They are SPECULATING that on the Age Group bike course - there will NOT be a bottle exchange this year - so make sure you have plenty of water with you on the bike. On my previous email, I had stated that the Elite have to swim for this Olympic qualifier. Since this is a National State of Emergency, this has been over-ruled by the governing bodies and they are allowing a Dry-Tri (Duathlon) for the Elite to qualify for the Olympics. Everything else (for right now) remains the same - * The Expo, Packet Pick-up, Race Briefings will still be handled at the Hy-Vee Hall at the same times. * You will still need to check your bike in to the transition area on Saturday - June 21st between 2pm-8pm. There will be over night security watching the bikes. Again, this transition area will be at the South Woods Freshman Highschool. * All new information on the race course, etc. will be covered at the race briefings at the Hy-Vee Hall. Bodymarking will be at the South Woods Freshman Highschool. Due to this change occuring from a National State of Emergency, there will not be any refunds, transfer of fees to next year, or transfers to another person. I have been told that the website will be updated (hopefully today - but I do not have a date) with the new information, as well as the new race courses - - once they are decided. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility with all of the changes. This will still be an amazing and exciting event!! I will continue to send any updates that I hear!! Have a great day, everyone! I hope you are all staying dry and safe! |

Beth...I think having the 10k first is better for you!! You know you can run that, so just gut it out and get that done. Then do your thing on the bike, and when it's time for the 5k, just do what you can do. You might feel like you can run it! Or at least to some walk/run. But at least you know you only have 3 miles left....and not a daunting 10k as the final leg. I bet you will do better than you think! |

I assume don't go all out on the first run and go from there maybe. I personally don't know any other way then to go all out through the whole race. It's a race, right? I personally will be trying to get that 10k in getting my best time possible, then bang out the bike, and when we come back around to run again, whatever my legs have left in them, is what they have in them. Could be lots, could be nothing. But when I am done racing, I will know that I have left nothing out there on that course. I am never left thinking "I think I could have/should have gone faster on that first run because I have a lot left, etc......." But that's just me. Other people take a more conservitive approach, but I am kind of a "balls to the wall" kinda girl! |

Veteran 246 western iowa, almost nebraska. | Subject: RE: Hy-Vee Triathlon I am a great cyclist and a strong average swimmer, and all I had to do was keep it together for a 10K and not let everyone pass me. Now I will be starting my bike ride in last place, with a mountain of people to pass before I get off the bike, and let them all pass me back! I am not a happy person with the news of this being a 135.00 dollar duathlon! |

I assume don't go all out on the first run and go from there maybe. My opinion....from having done a couple of Du's in my lifetime... Hold back a little on the first 10k. Transitioning from RUN to BIKE is a lot different than Swim to Bike. Cramping is a huge issue, not just to me but I've seen several athletes have this problem after sprinting a 10k then jumping on the bike. Best bet is to do a short warm up before the race, then run the first 4-5 miles hard and back off the last mile or so to allow your legs and HR to recover. Keep your Run cadence HIGH, just as if transitioning from T2 to the run. T2 to the final 5k should be Ballz out. Good luck everyone. |

As for the Du....I have never done a DU before, but have done several Reverse Tri's, where you run first, bike then swim. The swim sucks for me whether it's first or last, so I might as well get a fast run off first, then have my sucky swim at the end. So instead of drowning, I will have to trudge my cement legs along for another 3 miles. So we'll see how it goes. I am all about trying something new, so it will be fun no matter what. As for a $135 duathlon....I will take that over having lost my house or property or loved ones due to the storms and flooding. I am sure all those people the City of Des Moines are trying to help with the flooding issues could give a rat's that our race has been changed. Just last night a tornado killed 4 boy scouts on the Western edge of Iowa. So again....speaking only for myself....it's all about perspective, and I am just happy to be healthy enough and have the leisure time/money to be doing any kind of race on Sunday. |
