Slugger - 2008-12-04 9:27 PM Ah, isn't it amazing what pics do for us? So many people REFUSE to do the before pics and measurements, then kick themselves when they don't have anything to compare their new selves. You want embarrassing - I have pics of me in breeches. WHITE breeches. Ew. Not that the tan ones were any more flattering. Hey gang, don't forget to get that spreadsheet updated! The first week ends TODAY, and we want to make sure the standings are accurate. Speaking of, Melissa, are you all set with your goals?

I think so-but I am a little foggy right now so I will get back to you later.  Did I mention that I gave myself a concussion yesterday?   Until a half hour ago I only had a bit of a headache, but then my pupils dilated.  My mom is trying to track down a drop in clinic that my insurance covers.  I just checked my eyes again and the pupils are responding to light properly...I wish I wasn't so adept at hurting myself.

Offthegrid - 2008-12-05 5:29 AM Good morning, Comets. I was cozily hitting snooze on my alarm, happy and content in bed, sleeping waaaay past when I should have been up, and then I thought of the challenge and got my behind out of bed because I already missed one swim session this week. So, thank you! And I fulfilled one of my life's goals: I did a 100 IM. I always wished I could do butterfly, but could never make it 25 yards. Well, it was the sloppiest, slowest butterfly in history, but I made it across the pool without drowning. Cool.

Your butterfly sounds remarkably similar to mine.  My shoulders aren't very flexible and I can't get my arms up out of the water-they end up plowing across the surface.  It isn't effective or pretty.

disturbed275 - 2008-12-04 7:21 PM Just finished up another great swim with my tri class.   It was an endurance workout.  I was actually leading the "intermediate" lane tonight which has never happened before.  I'm quite happy

Congratulations!!

I'm way too scared to try any other strokes because I know they won't be pretty. My hat's off to you two.

I swam with my tri friend Marianne today...she did all my open water IM swims with me...great friend.

It seems my stroke is improving but when I take off my fins my hips/legs drop and then I lose my oomph in the front of my stroke and rotate to much from side to side..and need to stay flatter.

I'm told that core work helps with keeping the legs from dropping.  I can definitely feel the difference when I'm doing it right.  Unfortunately that isn't very often

This is my goal to swim Pike like...actually Iron Pike Like...

I heard back from my swim coach about my swimming..her thoughts,

I don’t think it’s a problem to be using flippers for a while so you can feel the power up front and correct some old habits. One thing you can do to supplement that is spend some time just floating on the surface, face down, neutral spine with appendages relaxed but spine firm....staying connected from head to toe (you may need a very small arch in your back so that you feel like a saucer). Another thing to consider is ankle flexibility. Getting so much benefit in body position from the flippers sometimes indicates bad foot position while swimming without them. The foot must be “floppy” (relaxed) while toes are pointed and slightly turned in. If your ankles are stiff, it greatly affects body position and forward propulsion. In that case, the flippers actually help stretch them."

I've heard ankle flexibility is key.  Runners have notoriously bad ankle for swimming.  I'm trying to fix that

I very rarely do butterfly anymore.  Occasionally I check to see if my shoulders have decided to loosen up, but I haven't had any luck yet.

I started swim lessons when I was two and it wasn't long before I was swimming around like a little otter.  I am much more impressed by all the folks out there who have learned to swim as an adult.  Swimming is an incredibly difficult (and frightening) skill to learn if you haven't spent much time in the water.

Yes, I have stiff ankles too, runner's ankles, so I'm supposed to do 1000s w/ fins.  Boring!

Yeah I'm still learning....and improving.... well hopefully.  The focus is on building the base up over the winter so i don't struggle in the spring again

Yeah I read an article not too long ago giving a few pointers on how to work out those runner's ankles.  Gonna have to find that again

pointed toes, almost like ballet....

kick from hips with nearly staight legs

one way to "fix" the ankle is to sit on them like you're getting ready to do the yoga child's pose

--my 2 cents anyway

Good morning all.  I am debating whether I will go for a little run after breakfast today.  My head isn't back to 100% but I have discovered the a morning run is a great way to start the day.  I must be loosing it.    6 months ago I would have done just about anything to avoid running and now I am getting up 45+ minutes early in the morning to make sure I have time to get a run in.  Maybe I hit my head harder than I thought.  No, that's not it, I have had this strange running impulse for the last 2 weeks.

Comets, I went swimming this morning since I didn't go Wednesday so I would hit 3/week.

I liked going swimming this morning - a lot - because I don't have to worry about getting out to go to work.

When I got there, masters were taking up 3 lanes, and an older lady was swimming in the other lane (with water walkers in the last lane.) I was thrilled - I wouldn't be run over, and I might be able to keep up with her. Well, she was faster than I, but only by 5-10 yards/25, but after I did only 100 free, she moved over to the water walkers. Boy, I sure scare them away.

I did a lot of stroke counting, and think I may have had another stroke breakthrough. I know from Total Immersion that you're supposed to snap the hips, but I don't think I was doing that enough. When I did, I felt the different.

And for the first time, I got under 20 strokes/length. Woo hoo! I know that's still a little high, but I'm thrilled with it.

I have inflexible ankles - it's what we're working on in physical therapy for my plantar fascia tear. I think I will incorporate more fin stuff in my swimming. But when I take them off, things seem to fall apart. And I hate feeling so slow afterward.

Well, today we're going shopping. Woo-hoo. First to Bath & Body Works. I want to get some different shower gels for the gym. I like to think they help take away the smell of chlorine a tiny bit. Then I'm getting my hair cut. It's a little above shoulder length now, and I'm kinda liking it longer in the front, but it's turned into a mess in the back.

And then the fun part - I get to shop for new running shoes! My new podiatrist says he wants me in cushioning shoes only. Well, I tried everything else, and my old orthotics certainly weren't helping, so I am hoping this will help do the trick. I'm also going to have them measure my feet and see about going into a smaller size.

And then, the really fun part - I hope to do a very brief jog to try them out. I miss running a lot, but I know I have to start up again slowly.

I gave her a toy and I thought she was chewing on that. *sigh*

But then again, how many times have I told him not to leave his shoes laying around because the dog always manages to get a hold of them?

So we may be shopping for two pairs of shoes today. Drat!
