Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() George- If it is up high on the outside of the top half of the lower leg, I had the same problem last year but it sounds like yours was/is worse. I had a right hip issue at the same time. I researched it on the internet and found that both areas on my right leg were most likely caused by running on the same side of the road on a slant for long periods of time. I know this is a no-brainer but I never thought of it. This article explained that running on the same side of the road, if running in the street, causes us to constantly run on an uneven plane(if running against traffic, the road is built to slant to our left so the water runs into the gutter when it rains). So, when running against traffic our left leg is able to be at near full extension, while, unless you bob up and down when you run, our right leg never reaches full extension. Our right hip is slightly closer to the pavement than the left because of the slant in the pavement causing this stride difference. Hopefully that made sense. So, to counter this, I switched sides as I ran when on portions of my run with no sidewalk creating some balance in my running. It took about 3 weeks, but my problem went away and I have never had it back. Yes, I know running with traffic is dangerous, but I picked roads with little traffic when running on the right side of the road. If this does not help, tomorrow I am meeting a someone who is amazing at fixing my sports related problems like this. I will ask her what she thinks. She is a firm believer that whereever you feel the pain is not the location or source of the problem. So far with me, she has been dead on. Oh yeah, she does an IM every other year and has for as long as I have known her(IMWI 3x and IMFL 1x) so she knows why we hurt!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() George-Way to go, something is better than nothing! Yes, running on the road facing traffic all of the time can cause issues. Your pelvis is tilted ever so slightly which can cause hip, knee, and ankle problems. I do exactly what Pat said and switch sides throughout the run and get up on sidewalks when available. Trail running is another option when we don't have 2 feet of snow. Pat-I will take you up on that offer after the holidays! Thanks so much. I think I will try out the paddles, the only pool toy I haven't used. I need to get back to using my tempo trainer again too.

So what is a tempo trainer? When I have my first lesson I will post what she tells me. I have had lessons before, but it was just to get me swimming. I am hoping that now that I can swim these will help me become a better swimmer! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice job getting in the tread George... I have no idea about the calf muscle thing- does stretching before the run help? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy- yes get the garmin.. i have the 305.... it a neccessary training tool!! I havent used paddels much.... they are weird feeling to me. I do have an awesome swim coach and he hast reccommended them to me (yet). My coach told me the other day that I will be his personal challenge to get my IM swim where I want it to be As for Door County I ahvent thought ata ll about where to stay- suppose I should get on that. Someone pick aplace and we should all try to stay there! I ran twenty (miles) last night at he Pettit center- its 450m track. I am actually doing an indoor marathon there in Jan....ugh.... I know- crazy. Im just bored and needed another race. When I signed up I only had 4 weeks to train.... not a very good example to you guys am I??? Nice job adding another race Kara! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pat-(and EVERYONE else) I LOVE LOVE LOVE infinite- I highly reccommend it. the first formula I made for myself I hated- I just didnt like to drink it. So I called Mike at infinit- who is awesomw and he helped me get the perfect formula- I used it on the bike for IM and wish I would have had it on the run. I am guessing you should be taking in 240-280 cal per hour and 18- maybe even 40 (at your size) oz of fluid...at least 1 bottle/hour. Gastric problems are the leading cause of DNFs...esp in IM races. Causes are 1- poor pacing- you went out to fast 2- too MUCH solid food 3- not enough water 4- becoming hyponatremic (low blood sodium levels) http://www.hammernutrition.com/downloads/fuelinghandbook.pdf there is GREAT info on caloric needs ^^^^^^ |

Thanks, I never thought of that. I run mostly on a trail but I have a 1/2 mile each way on the road to get to the trail. Next time out I'll try the sidewalk and see if that helps any. Of course the pounding of my 250+ lbs isn't helping matters at all. Door County sounds like you all are going to have a great time. I wish I was in better shape I would join you all. Hopefully next time. Temps. are supposed to get above 30 later this week then slam back down towards zero again. I'll have to make it a point to get outside when they climb a bit. Did I mention YEAH WINTER. George. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I have seriously been considering getting in the pools and trying a tri this year....I just have to find all my swim stuff, actually it's probably time to get new ![]() Saturday was a great training day for me I did a brice 20 bike/60 run then I came in and helped put the girls down for nap and did and hour on my trainer. Today is supposed to be a 50 min bike. I just have to swim through the snow drifts to make it to our gym (on our property). Hope everyone had a great weekend. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I used to own a super cheap(£10) and nasty HRM from the Pharmacy (Drugstore!) I was manager of, but the battery died on me and it turns out, the whole thing is kapput, not just the battery, so Santa's coming a day early (if I'm lucky with the post! New toys coming - Woo Hoo! (If it's here in time I can use it at the race this Sunday (if my sore throat goes away- lots of "if's"!!) K |

![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oops - forgot about details - excited about toys! It's the local bike club - they run a Winter Series of XC mountainbike races - normally in the 10-12 mile kind of range - the terrain means they're normally around 50 minutes for me now (the fast boys come in around 35 mins!) The races work out about one every three weeks - I've found it's a great way to keep me training through the winter and the club is how I got my basic CV fitness back! I've found that although I'm not to far behind them on the climbs, I'm way slower on the decents (because I'm a scaredy cat!) I'm hoping that all this cross training will give me more of a boost on the climbs - it's either that or I need to disconnect my brakes... (maybe not!) K Now I'm getting into Tri, I'm going to just use the races as one of my bike sessions - one where I really push hard! Edited by keefmac 2008-12-22 4:15 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The tempo trainer is a small electronic device that emits a beep based on your target stroke rate. I put it under my swim cap above my ear and try to keep pace with one stroke per beat. You can use it for running too, it has a clip on the back of it. I tend to take it a little too easy when I swim and the tempo trainer forces me to pick it up. |

Once I put it in a ziploc under my swim cap for an OWS though. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy- I think the 305 says water resistant to 2 meters? Not sure if that is the right depth, it is pretty shallow. I would never wear it in the pool either. I does come with 2 sets of wrist bands. We tried the smaller set for Julie and it just barely too small, so we went with the larger band. It is easy to replace. Getting used to something that big vs a regular watch does take a little time. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Look for points of view or comments... I spoke with a coach today who wanted to help train me. She has done IM 4x and I know that she could help me greatly. I trained with one of her pupils last year a few days doing OWSs. For $100/mo, I would get monthly personalized training schedule, unlimited quesitons, nutrition plan advice, and OWS with 1 other pupil(same one as last year) 1x per week when the weather is cooperating. She is also doing IMWI again this year so I will probably get several loops on the bike route with her. I feel comfortable with this, but would like to hear input. thx |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quiz time--who is it? Amy of APG? I guess I would ask how many people she has coached before and what her success rate is (i.e. how many of her athletes finished). Is she USAT certified? How long has she been coaching? What is her education background/certifications? We did a lot of research before we chose our coach. I do think you have to have a "connection" with your coach and be comfortable working with them. |
