Shastaman32 - 2009-04-16 3:43 PM So how do we link up everyone for friends and the logs and such for this training??

I still haven't figured that out... I made mine "public" I think but I don't know anything about this "friends" business.

click on "training log" -> at the very top click on "settings" -> on the top tab of the new window that shows up click "Training Blog Customization" -> then right under that click on "Friends".  From there you can type in a friends name and add them to your side.

If you want to add folks to your short/long term goals you can always create a table and manually add a link to each persons training log in that table.  I choose not to do this but i'll keep all active members of this mentor thread in my friends list.

p.s. ADD ME!  I thrive on "inspires"... perhaps a little attention whoreish.

hip82 - 2009-04-16 2:12 PM Question about swim wave starts.

Are they typically by Age?  I assume elites would be first off.
Being 49, I'm guessing I'll be in one of the last waves.

I'm not totally sure myself but I think it's up to the race director how they group everyone.  I was in a race where I registered just a few days before the deadline and was in the last wave with people of all ages.  I struck up a conversation before the swim start with a guy that had to be in his 50's (i was 25).  Pretty fit looking guy.

I've heard of other races where they start with young age groups first, they have a special start for the youngest and oldest people doing the race, or if there are different distances they will have them start in grouped waves - eg: Half Iron will start first, Olympic, then sprint.  That way sprints are last in first out, and HIM is typically first in last out.

gone - 2009-04-16 11:01 AM Good stuff...I am really tempted to just go with out it and use the "Force".  Terrible, I know...another question, I am aware of the rules regarding swimming set forth by the USAT.  How are the rules different for the pool events.  The sprint this weekend is a pool swim, so I am not sure about the differences if any...

I hope all is well with everyone...stay healthy and be safe.

As far as the actual rules, there shouldn't be any real difference.  The method for getting everybody off will be different.  Most likely they will send off swimmers every 5-10 seconds or so, normally I think in the order from fastest (self-reported time) to slowest, except that the elites go first in any case.

Be aware that lots of people will mis-seed themselves (typically by reporting a swim time that is faster than what they can do), which can result in a lot of bunching up in the pool, and can make the walls a real busy place.  In my last tri, I was able to flip-turn the first few walls, and then ended up in a group of 5 people more or less the rest of the way and flip-turns were just not on at that point.

As far as I know, sometimes its done by estimated swim time, sometimes by estimated overall time, sometimes by age groups, sometimes randomly.

sorry for the delay,

As others have said swim waves can be in any number of order, guys/girls, age groups, elites first if there are any, one mass start, pool swims are by times, etc.

nice job on reg for the first race, my girlfriend will be at cap of texas as well doing the olympic distance!

Good morning Group,

Sorry I've been out of the loop, actually I've been here just not alot to say.  I have been trying to get back on track and out of my slump. So far so good this week. I have gotten what I planned to do done and have lost 1.25lbs.  So who is racing this weeked?? I am not, but wish all of you racing the very best. I am going out of town (down to NC) for the weekend so hopefully the weather will be nice and I can ride on the Smokey Mountians roads, hills, hills and more hills.  Well off to pack. Take care and I'll try to be more involved.

Chris

To add friends and be able to see their logs and put comments go to your training log and in the left side at the bottom or close to, you have a friend highlight (click there and add up to 60 I guess) good luck.

hey all,

i am at the hotel, have to be up in 4 hours (dont worry i dont sleep much before shorter races).
heading to bed in a few min, up at 5, race starts at 7:30.

after seeing who all is racing/field size (700), and being sick i am setting my sights simply on top 10.

Much Luck to you David. You'll do fine and I hope you feel well soon. And much luck to anyone else racing or training this weekend. I'm off to walk the pup and try not to wake my Mom's dog. He is a terror to walk. Have a great weekend everyone

race started well, didnt end so well.

swim went great, passed a TON of people (time trial start), bike was going great, i had thecourse record for bike set last year at 22mph, very hilly course. after 8 miles and the hardest parts out of the way i was ave 25.6, and feeling good, but i hit a thron that should have been on a cactus and got a flat:-(

it sucks but i would rather have it here than later in the season, and it is good to see where the fitness levels are right now:-)

Dave - that sucks...I hope the rest of it went well for you.I would like to update you all and tell you I have a race report up for my triathlon this weekend, but I still do not understand why they did not post more than 1 printed copy of the results. It was a 1pm start, I was done and showered by 3ish and rushed to start the 3.5 hours drive back to catch the Blackhawks playoff game. All I know is I finished 19th overall. I will share more when I get my results and I can break it down a bit myself. I can say that riding an older mountain bike and not a descent road bike, is like bringing a knife to a gun fight...at least in Chicago.I hope everyone is staying healthy and training safe.

yeah i was happy with how things went up to that point, and it happens from time to time. frankly i am supprised with some of the roads i race on that this didnt happen before now. the tire on the disk had over 30 races on it, and the thorn prob would have went through any tire i was riding.

Nice job on the races everyone.  19th on a mountain bike is pretty impressive.  Sorry about the flat, David.

I got my weekends mixed up and thought I had a race this weekend, but it's next weekend.  Embarassed   Instead, I ended up at a traditional Swedish smorgasbord, ate masses of pickled fish, etc., then went for a 3-4 hour ride.  I don't recommend doing that.

Hi Everyone.  In case you find it helpful, I avoided work this morning and created a little table with everyone's name and a link to his logs.  I'd paste it here, but this editor mucks up the links when I do that, so if you want it, just copy and paste it from my training log to yours and it should work for you.

Subject: question about tri-suits

Sorry I haven't been on here since signing up.  Been really busy.

Just bought some tri-shorts and tri-top this weekend.

I have read that you need to use something like BodyGlide with a wetsuit, what about a tri-suit? Is there a significant chance of chaffing?

for what its worth i have not used body glide or anything on my wetsuit in 3 years.

if it fits well you wont need it it all.

with a tri suit you should never need it, its just like wearing under armor or bike shorts.

I use a little body glide for very long (15+ mile) runs.  Otherwise I can sometimes get bad chafing 'down there', not to mention bloody nipples.  (Not a pleasant topic of conversation -- or a pleasant experience for that matter -- but you asked!)

Try shorts and tops tend to create less chafing (for me) than standard running shorts and top, I assume because they fit tightly.
