Come and play with us! Oh, I'll be there. I have to defend my honor against brickey. I beat him here last season, but he beat me in Grand Marais last fall. (I think he messed with my bike, because I had to stop to fix my shoes.) I need to get him 2 out of 3. ITS ON!!!! BRING IT FATTY!!! |

Extreme Veteran 446 Mason | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon : Official Thread matt3liv - 2009-05-18 8:57 AM Does anyone know if the bike course will be open or closed this year? Most of the course was closed last year. That was nice because you could really cut the corners. I'm going to scout the road conditions this weekend, but I wanted to know what to look for. Also, the tent that we used last year was the victim of a nasty gust of wind. It is no longer operational. Matt, here's a lengthy response to your question about the bike course...if you don't want to read it all it basically says "same as last year". The City of Lansing Department of Planning and Neighborhood Development announces the following traffic operations will be in effect from 5:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2009 for the Hawk Island Triathlon. Street Closing to close around 8:00 a.m.: Cavanaugh Road between Aurelius Road and Pennsylvania Avenue will have short term street closings as the participants exit and enter the park for the bicycle portion of the triathlon. LPD will have officers on site to aid with traffic operations. Due to road construction eastbound travel on Forest Road between Staten Avenue and Alliance Driver prohibited during the bike portion of the Triathlon. Lane Closures beginning around 5:30 a.m.: The eastern most northbound travel lane on Pennsylvania Avenue between Samantha Street and Mount Hope Avenue The southern most eastbound travel lane on Mount Hope Avenue between Aurelius Road and Beaumont Road (East Lansing). Travel Lane Shift beginning around 5:30 a.m.: Westbound vehicular traffic on Mount Hope Avenue between Aurelius Road to Pennsylvania Avenue will be prohibited from making a left turn. Eastbound vehicular traffic on Mount Hope Avenue between Donora Street and Aurelius Road will be shifted to the center (Left Turn Only) lane. Travel Restriction at Intersections: During the bicycle portion of the race to ensure the safety of the participants and motorist the Lansing Police Department (LPD) or authorized personnel will be directing motorists at intersections along the route. At around 7:30 a.m. the Intersection and Traffic Signal at Pennsylvanian Avenue and Mount Hope Avenue will switch to a FOUR WAY STOP. LPD will have officers on site to aid with traffic operations. At around 7:30 a.m. the traffic signals at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Healthcare Court will also be put into flash mode. At these intersections the east and westbound traffic will need to STOP prior to entering the intersection. North and southbound vehicles should approach these intersections with caution. Bicycle Race Route: After the 400 meter swim the race participants will mount their bicycles and exit Hawk Island County Park to Cavanaugh Road. The 16 K race will travel west on Cavanaugh Road to Pennsylvania Avenue, north on Pennsylvania Avenue to Mount Hope Avenue, travel east on Mount Hope Avenue to Beaumont Road, south on Beaumont Road to Forest Road, west on Forest Road to Aurelius Road, south on Aurelius Road to Cavanaugh Road, west on Cavanaugh Road to return to the Hawk Island County Park to begin the 5k run, the last event. |

My wife Robin is doing her first tri and my second. We are from Windsor, ON and have family in Lansing. Have a great race everyone. Any guess on when they will be closing the transition area? Is there a typical time before a race that they close it? TimRacers:

Hi everyone. I've been lurking on this website for a little while and have enjoyed reading all the comments. I will also be doing my first tri at Hawk Island and will stop by the tent to introduce myself. There was an option to either age-group start or individual time trial start. Do you think that one way is preferable to the other? I signed up for group start thinking "Oh, I can just follow everybody else!" but wonder if that is too much for my first tri. Thanks! Joe Same as Puppetmaster, this was my first last year and I did the individual, and I was one of the last individuals to start. I wished I had done the group start because I still had feet in my face, I was just behind a lot more people. Also it's that many more people to pass (I'm being optimistic) in the bike portion if you are starting behind them. |

Master 1895 | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon : Official Thread This was my first Tri ever last year and I did the group start. I'm glad I did...and I didn't have any problems. One suggestion that I took from the BT site was to start the swim towards the side and not in the dead middle of the group. That way you're not in the thick of things and will probably not get kicked or slapped as much. |

Veteran 194 Pinckney, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon : Official Thread This will be my first Tri, and I'm pretty sure I'm doing the group start. (this is also the only fact in my post) It probably has more to do with your comfort in the water than anything else (*theory*) If you are the least bit nervous about the swim, do an individual start (*theory*) AND... (just remembered) if you do individual starts, you can start with people that may not normally be in your wave (spouse, friend, what-have-you) (again... *theory*) Hope this helps (ok, this is a fact, too... so 2 facts... sue me) |

I almost bought one at a garage sale last week and had my mom put Beginner Triathlete on it. dang.... |

There is now an inch of water a 15 foot stretch of the potential revised course and it's getting deeper...no idea what's going to happen yet. Maybe there will be a second swim portion? |

Master 1390 Ferndale, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon : Official Thread for sure, the tent is going to be stuffed with the Greyhounds! Considering everyone else meeting there, we'll be spilling out the sides! An extra tent would rock. I am also bringing a few chairs, but everyone else can, as well. I was really hoping to set up over a picnic table. By the way, the tent is got. It's medium blue and and KHS in yellow on it. I will also bring a bike stand, pump and tools, for those that may way to wrench their bikes. Does anyone know if alcohol is banned from the park? Just asking |

Does anyone know if it's possible to change your race start option on race day? After a few of the comments on this thread, I think I'm in favor of switching from individual to group start. It won't completely bum me out if I can't but I'd hate to miss out on the "full experience". See you Sunday! Jason |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Hawk Island Triathlon : Official Thread I thought that I read somewhere that you could change the day of, but don't quote me on it. Also, this is "chip start" even for the group start, meaning that your clock doesn't start until you cross the line. Even if you start in the group, and wait 5 seconds to cross the line, you won't be tagged with the extra 5 seconds. I waited a couple seconds last year. |
