Anyways, being 200+ guy or your age is not a medical condition. lisac957 - 2009-07-31 4:45 PM evondo - 2009-07-31 4:34 PM I personally know it's much harder to run as a heavier guy than a light one... OMG I just can't help myself! It's also much harder to (swim or bike or) run as a person with: Diabetes Asthma Arthritis Cancer or in remission Heart paliptations Amputated limbs Short legs Previous injuries Shin splints Big boobies Females on their period Ingrown toenails Poor eyesight Depression Migranes Intestinal disorders (ooh that's me! where's my category?) But but but... you can't help it if you have asthma or diabetes or anything on that list, right? I thought that was the whole argument for the clydes category... that you can't help being 200 lbs and are at a disadvantage because of it. Medical conditions or not, all of those things are beyond our control and put us at a significant disadvantage. So only the women with Big Natural Boobies, since it is out of their control, get a division? Yes, we women w/ BNB's should get our own division. We have to wear more clothes which add weight (big honkin' azz bras) under our clothes, BNB's are NOT aerodynamic on the bike - big drag factor, and on the run, they just get in the way. I, then, will selflessly volunteer to be the "podium guy" and place the finishers medals round your necks. I'm not all that tall, though, so y'all might need to bend down just a tad. LOL |

I then look at what percentile I was in at the finish. Always trying to finish further up the list than the last Tri. One Class; Everybody competes against each other. . . Age Group Class Athena / Clyde Class Asthma Class Bad Knees Class Where does it end? ? ? ? And I'll never see a podium until they make a class for, "Slow People." Yeah, the Slow People Class, I like that. Otherwise, I love the explanation by "ray6foot7". I think that is the best explanation I have ever heard. Way to go Ray! ! ! |

Redneck analogies. I was hoping someone here spoke my language. LOL, I used to mess around racing a little just because I was fascinated with all the variables. I took a front wheel drive V6, Pontiac Grand Prix and could run 12.2 in the quarter mile with it. It dyno'd 408 to the wheels. I replaced the cam, ported the heads myself, put in larger valves, replaced the cam, and added an intercooled Novi2000 supercharger. I was pushing 18psi. It sounded like a jet with that blower. Training yourself is soooo much cheaper and more reliable than modding cars to make them fast. |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Why would someone this fast race Clydes? kristinc0916 - 2009-07-31 7:16 PM Personally, I usually race Athena and do so b/c I get a better chance at hardware. What it really comes down to though is bettering my own personal times. Hardware is just extra. If I reach or exceed my personal goals, it's a good race for me. Also, FWIW, I was at the OP's race this past Sunday and hardly ANY of the Athena's were marked accurately on their legs. I came in 4th Athena and didn't see anyone else in the entire race with an "A" on their leg. Granted, I was 12 mins. slower than 3rd place but the whole race not to see anyone??? If you're gonna race A or C, get marked as such - just like AG'ers. hmmm.... I sometimes race athena, sometimes AG. For me it often comes down to which division will give me a better wave start.... At any rate, maybe they do it differently for different races or regions, but I've never been in ANY race where A or C where marked. |

Master 2491 | Subject: RE: Why would someone this fast race Clydes? Why are YOU so concerned about it? We all have our own reasons and motivations in the sport, but I don't think we owe everyone an explanation. I'd expect the answer to your question boils down to the likeliness of hardware. Nothing wrong with that. |

Veteran 148 | Subject: RE: Why would someone this fast race Clydes? I am a Clyde myself (or "legally fat"), and I look at this like a handicap in Golf. Weight obviously does make a big difference, especially on the run. Triathlons are probably the only endurance sports where this "handicap" is taken into account. As someone earlier in this thread said: it is even more impressive if a clyde manages to be competitive with the "skinnies" Most of us do this sport because we are type A people, nothing wrong with going after the hardware!! |

Expert 838 West Palm Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Why would someone this fast race Clydes? All that big, fast Clyde does is prove the norm by virtue of being so exceptional. Would anyone say that a 48 y.o. that crushed their age group should race as a 30-34 because they could have podiumed there? Or maybe Crissie Wellington ought to race with the guys because she can finish top 10 overall? Let athletes race in whatever group they're allowed to race in, at their own discretion. To simply chalk up the motivation for racing in a "less competitive" category for some self-aggrandizing desire for podium gold, and not any other reason, is lame IMO. |

Regular 95 North Haven | Subject: RE: Why would someone this fast race Clydes? Rudedog55 - 2009-07-31 4:17 PM I can only give my opinion on my race i just did, the NYC Olympic clyde 39- winner 2:13 second 2:16 clyde 40+ winner 2:14 second 2:19 ag 35-39 winner 2:06 second 2:06 ag 40-44 winner 2:09 second 2:10 a 2:13 Oly is still freaking fast, but the 39- guy would have been 10th or 11th in ag, vs 1st in Clyde for the record, i went 2:40 in my first Oly, and was bottom of top third in Clyde 40+, 21 of 68 That is why the division was created, for fast larger than average athletes. a 6'3" 201lb dood is still big. Very Impressive Brotha.... |
