I'm a definate maybe.  I will have to see what the wife says as spring get closer.

I might be able to use my friend to get a few cheap rooms if I end up going.

I would love to ride the actual course before the race!!!

Sounds like a plan. I had definitely planned on riding the course and living 3 hours away, I'll probably make a long day of it. I didn't know when I'd be going, but I'd like to try and coordinate it with the BT ride, that would be great.

I'm in for a ride anytime on the course. I live about a mile from the course here in Louisville, so if anyone has any questions don't hesitate to ask.

I got a question King...if you live a mile from the Lou bike course, does this mean it's back to your place for the recovery beer after our group ride?! Just kidding...whereabouts do you live? I lived in Lou for a year back in 2001-2002. I miss Bardstown rd, some cool places there.

For sure, drinks at my house, and if anyone is hard up for a free room (for example you just shelled out a ludicrous amt of money for one race, haha) bring your blow up mattress. Right now I'm over near Ballard high school off Brownsboro, but I'm buying a house on lower Brownsboro near Zorn. It should be very convenient for riding the course (just down the hill on Zorn and I'm on the second or third mile of the course).

irondg - 2009-11-04 1:28 PM I know it's ealry, but does anyone have an interest in meeting in Louisville in the spring (APR/MAY?) and ride the course?  As I put in an earlier post, it's not a hard course, but since my wife is doing it with me in 2010 I want to take her out and at least ride the beginnning the first loop of Lagrange and the finish.  The roads have a few issues that I want her to be ready for.  If we get a group maybe we can get a group rate at a hotel.  Just thinking out loud.

I live in Louisville and will be willing to meet up. Just let me know the date and time.

That is a fact!  It is a FANTASTIC race.  I have no idea why it doesn't sell out sooner, but it could be one of the best kept Ironman secrets.

Has anyone here done the Augusta 70.3 and Ironman Louisville? If so, I am wondering about how the bike courses compared between the two races. I did Augusta this year and my training held up well on the bike and I am trying to see if I need to use the same terrain I trained on or find a new place to ride to get ready for Ironman Louisville.

This will be my first IM and I am just a bit skittish about it so I am trying to find out all I can.

Thanks.

I'm in.  First Ironman distance race.  Quite nervous.

I'll be doing the Doug plan.  I'm still working up to marathon distance (plantar fasciitis).

I did Austin this year and since I live in Louisville I train on the IM course. In my opinion Austin does not compare. I find the hills in Louisville to be much steeper and there are more hills in the same distance. I find the hardest hills on the IM LOU course to be Wolfpen, 1694, 393 and the long hills on 42 when returning to T2. In Austin I found the hardest hills to be early in the course on Decker.

If you can I would come to ride at least the first loop before the race.

If you did fine in Augusta you should be fine in Louisville.  I ride the rolling hills out in West Cobb County (Powder Springs) and I was just fine.  A few times in the Gaps might help, but there are only two "major" climbs.  If memory serves they are about mile 20  and 21.  It's an out and back turnaround on a side road before heading to Lagrange.  The rest of the course is pretty and rolling.  First 11 and last 11 flat as a pancake.

Is Louisville generally a windy course? I want to buy some race wheels for next year and would like to take IMKY into consideration. Im a light guy (155lbs) so anything too aero might be unstable in stronger winds for me. Are discs pretty standard there among racers? What are some of the bike setups you guys used?

I asked the question in the Georgia forum:

I raced at 158 lbs last year.  The winds were moderate.  I usually race with a HED 3C front Tri-Spoke and HED Disk.  I opted to rent some ZIPP 808's from raceday wheels because of the winds the weeks leading up to the race.  I felt like I was being blown sideways only two times.  I'll probably rent the 808's again.  It was totally hassle free.  The folks at raceday wheels did all of my wheel and cassette change outs.  All I had to do after the race was wheel my bike back into the Expo and they had me ready to head home in less than 10 minutes.  Plus $165 dollars per "A "race makes more sense to me than dropping 2-3K for wheels again.  I cannot let go of my tri spoke and disk, I just don't ride them well in winds over 15 mph.

The past two years it hasn't been that windy.  The only time I felt the wind pushing my front wheel, was in 08 on the down hill before you turn onto Ballard School Rd.

I raced a Disc/H3 combo with no problems.  Are they standard, not sure but I saw a bunch of them(disc) this year.  What  is your goal time?

Sounds good to me. I hope to go sub 6 for the bike, I am working on my bike like crazy this winter to get ready, not to mention that North Georgia (about 30 minutes from me) has some awesome training areas (6 Gaps rides). I just want to make sure I am getting the right thing before I make the plunge on a big purchase like wheels. I considered renting, but figured I would be using the wheels for every other event I do so why not?

I saw just about every wheel combination you can think of at IMKY this year.  And that included quite a few discs.  I raced IMKY at 142 lbs, used a disc rear, and loved it.  In my experience, a disc rear wheel does not create any instabilities, even on windy days.  The front wheel selection is more of an issue in this regard.

Sounds good. What did you use for the front? Im stuck in between a 80mm rim depth v. a tri-spoke....
