Went on my first run today after my first run sprint tri last week.  Had some issues with a head cold in the morning.  I was having issues with my asthma in the middle of my run, but took the inhaler, but went much better after.

Evening gang hope you are having a crazy day! Not trained today as my back is a bit sore and well we are pretty ice and snow bound here so running is out. I'm having a sports massage tomorrow night which really helps, boy hurts at the time but really eases the muscles in my back, I'd recommend it a monthly one to all of you.

Great to see the goals coming on, lets look at them in the week. The conversation on running shoes is interesting, it is so so so important to find a pair that suit your own style of running and shape of your feet. A visit to a specialist running shop is a must, since I did this I’ve stuck with the same brand and model for the past 3 years and they are like slippers.

I’ve spent sometime today putting the basis of my race season together, this is first draft, I’m sure it will change.

The Leeds Olympic Triathlon will be one of my A races this year, probably the Beverley 10k too. These are the ones I’ll build my training towards. I have a nice little clump of 3 races in 3 weekends at the end of June which will be fun. I may chuck a dualthon in March to fill a space too.

Well only 5 days to Xmas, I’m hoping the snow and ice has shifted before Xmas Eve as I love running first thing that morning, gets me all excited! How are you all celebrating we have a quiet Xmas lunch planned, just the 11 of us around the table!!

Chris,

I've heard of these super stores where they help you find the right pair of shoes for your particular feet. The one you went to, was it a national chain? I've also heard from friends about the ortho inserts. I am trying to do this in the most economical and efficient manner possible. The ortho inserts my friend had made by her chiropractor cost somewhere in the ballpark of $140 - $180 and they are good for 5 years or so many miles (kind of like tires for your vehicle!) I wonder what the best choice is...

Erik,

Yeah, I have a brand new pair of $90 Asics. They are good for the first 5 miles. After that, like magic, the balls of my feet and toes start burning and I know without looking at the pedometer that I have past my 5 miles. I will DEFINITELY be visiting one of those specialty stores after the new year.

The question about the orthopedics, I don't know if you have one close to you, however Costco offers custom Orthos.  If you have the one it is worth a look.

Hello all, I did not have the chance to check with the site this weekend.

All are very reasonable and good goals, it seems. Good luck to us all.

Erik, it was an interesting jump of a goal from Oly to HIM Smile. If anywhere on your road your injuries bug you too much, you can always set your aim lower, I think.

Related to running shoes, there are no specialist running shops here and I am yet to meet a  running shoe salesman who has run 1K in all his/her life. So I am on my own to choose my shoes. Considering the fact that I do most of my running on trails, I buy trail shoes. And the trail shoes does not have any special fits, as far as I know. Am I correct?

My goals are:
1) Sub 2:20 olympic triatlon at my November 2010 race.
2) Sub 40 minutes 10K in may
3) Sub 25 minutes 1500 m swim by july.
4) Remain injury free.

I finished my only (oly) triathlon at 2:37 last year. But considering the facts that I went too slow in fear of exhaustion, I fell from the bike (because of a broken cleat, I will check them before the race this year), and it was my first experience, I feel I can do the time 2:20.

My bike skills and speed are very good. I can keep up with the best of the roadies. My running is decent (I feel I surely can do the sub 40 10K goal), so my limiter is my swim. I can swim any distance but I lack the speed. So I will be looking forward to any swim tips from this group.

Hiya, yes it was a national chain called "Up and Running" but remember  i'm in England. A boxer friend of mine has the flatest feet i`ve ever seen and he went to a similar shop and was sorted without expensive inserts. I would go to a specialist running shop a speak to someone in the know. Having spoken to others about i,t the minimum they should do is look at your stride, the way your foot stikes the floor and the angle of your knee.
Happy shopping,Chris.

Currently these are the races I plan on doing this year this might change due to money constraints.

I currently weight 165 with 20 % body fat.  I look to bring that down to 10-12 %  by the Olympic Tri. I also want to add around 5 to 10 pounds of muscle.  I have a friend at work that is a body builder and he has agreed to help me for free to build a work out plan.

I am excited and looking forward to a great season.

Great to see the chatter here!

My main goal is to finish an Olympic distance next season. I want to simply finish before they close the race I'm fine if I'm BOP. I did three sprint triathlons last season, and want to go to the next level.

Saturday April 18: Beaverdam Olympic (1500/26.2/6.2)-- I love this lake I swim there all the time I'm just worried I won't be ready by then for this distance. If I have to walk I will.
Sunday June 29

Never did the Kure tri.  Never even heard of it when I lived there.  Probably wasn't in existance yet.  I moved away to go to college in '85 and havent' been back there since around '95.  We get back to NC (Charlotte) once a year, but that's about it.

I checked with my annual training plan this morning after my swimming workout and found out that I planned this week as a testing week. I should have checked it on Sunday of course, and plan my week accordingly. But anyway, I will be more careful from now on.

So, I plan to do some time trials for all 3 disciplines this week. I plan to do a 1500 m swim, and 40 km bike ride (the course will be the same year round for me), but I have not decided what should I do for a running time trial? Should I use the 30 minute time trial which is also used for determining the LT? I will check with Friel's book of course, but I am curious what you people use for such a protocol, if any.

And next week I will be starting my "Base 1" period.

I'm in a similar boat. I've been thinking I was going to do my bike LT test in the rollers, and the run LT test in the treadmill. I'm curious what people think of this.

My rationale is that Friel says to have consistency for these tests, in terms of temp humidity conditions etc.. He also suggests a relatively flat course for the tests. Where I live that is very tough, pretty much impossible. With the bike roller/treadmill I would have consistency no matter what time of year or where I live (I'll be moving within a couple of years).

Plus it is getting really cold outside, pretty much beyond the time when I'll be biking outdoors very much.

Of course my worry is that roller biking (on my bike in my basement, lots of fun!) is not the same as regular biking out in the elements. For one, I don't have to worry about balance. Treadmills reproduce real running better than rollers reproduce real biking. On the other hand, since I'll pretty much be doing rollers for the next two or three months on my bike, isn't that the relevant exercise to use to get my heart rates fixed?

At any rate, I am leaning heavily toward doing all these tests indoors for now, and when spring comes perhaps I'll redo them outdoors.

Anyone have any experience, struggled with this decision? I guess it isn't that big a deal: it's not like I can't just redo a LT test if I feel I've short-changed myself. Not like I'm getting a tattoo or anything Smile After all, most people do their swimming LT using time trials in a pool, not open water. And we all know how different open water is from pool swimming.

It should be okay. When the weather warms up you will redo them outside as you stated.

Just a small thought:
If you have former TT data you can compare it with you indoor TT results. If they are compatible, then no problem. If they are different, then the first indoor TT result will be your base and you will gauge your progress against that one, till spring that is.

I agree-do it indoors now, then just redo it when you're back outside.  Also, you'll be able to use this year's indoor info next year to see how your base is building from year to year and also to compare your fitness levels form year to year.  You'll be able to see what you may need to increase over the indoor times from year to year to help improve your outdoor levels once you move back out.  It's all helpful!  The only way it would hurt would be if you crashed on your rollers...I know I've NEVER done anything like that...Embarassed

Alright, here's what happened...I use to ride on the rollers without the front stabilizer.  I would ride in a doorway to help with balance when needed (yes, I am laughing my off right now).  I would get to a pretty hefty pace when doing intervals.  I would also go for long periods of time- I'd turn my TV and watch a movie while riding on them.  Well, this one time I forgot to put the remote in my pocket and had wanted to fast forward through some previews.  The remote seemed, at the time, to be within reach.  So, here I am at about 25-28 MPH leaning over ever so carefully...and the next thing you know, I'm flying off the rollers sideways into the wall and doorway!  I leave a nice dent in my apartment wall, bang up my arm and right side a bit and wonder WTF just happened?!?!  Then, started laughing my off!  What a moron!  From that point on, I always kept the remote in my jersey pocket...

Unfortunately, I no longer have rollers as I sold them about 4 or 5 years ago when I was a couch potato to help fund a camera lens...oh well!

Hey Oscar a word of caution strength training is good but don't become a bodybuilder, for triathlon high reps low weights is the name of the game, there are loads of routines on the net that will help.

Hey Burak if you're going into Base 1 next week, I'd be tempted to give it a 30 mins time trial blast to see how you feel and give you a benchmark for when you move through to peak
