Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would agree with Tammy. I switched to a Tri Bike and gained a lot of speed and comfort. However, I have seen many people put Aero bars on their roadbike... Just get a TRI BIKE!!!! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I really lean towards a tri bike. I guess that decision will be partially dependent on when my house sells (and for how much). Although on a totally cool note, the house the wife wants to buy to replace the one we are selling....just happens to be located on a lake. That would be handy for swim training. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() sstucker - 2009-12-19 10:19 PM What about breathing out? Most times I don't think about it cause I'm concentrating on form, but once in a while I'm wondering when is it best to exhale. Is it best to exhale while head is still down or as you rotate and are about to take a breath? You should be exhaling gradually the entire time your head is in the water. It's much more tiring to hold your breath when you rotate your head in, then explode the air out right before your turn your head to catch a breath, etc. Heck, breathing like that would make you tired if you did it at your desk. Actually, I think that's the main thing that new swimmers do incorrectly, and why they have a tough time swimming very far - they're breathing is so erratic that it wears them out. |

Thanks, glad I asked that question. Never thought of holding and exploding air out would be the cause of being tired after a lap, but it makes sense. I just visualized both methods and felt a lot more relaxed with the gradual exhale. Now lets see how that works with my head in water tomorrow morning. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wanna race - 2009-12-19 7:39 PM Has anyone ever used compression socks or calf sleeves? thanks, mace Sorry I missed this earlier, but I have compression socks - the "recovery" kind. I like them and my lower legs feel better after I wear them, but not a TON better. I think the general consensus on the boards so far has been that they're good for recovery, but that running/racing in them is inconclusive. As it relates to calf sleeves, a few of the medical types thought that they might cause blood to pool in your feet, and consequently they seemed more positive on the socks vs. the sleeves. -Matt |

Yah, we need to hear the tri-bike top 5. I don't think I'll be able to buy one this year, but always look at them. Right now my leaders are the QR Cd0.1, the Argon 18 E-112 and possibly one of the mid-range Cervelos. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tripletmom01 - 2009-12-21 1:20 PM I personally like the Specialized Transition :-) I can't ever figure out if I like the look of those or not, they're really unique. Not cheap unfortunately, although it looks like R&A Cycles has some pretty good closeout deals. What will you be riding this year Tammy, and others who have bikes currently? I have a Felt F-55 roadbike with jammer aerobars. I put the aerobars on recently, and because of the taper of the handlebar they need to be way too close together. For right now on the trainer that means that I'm riding with my arms crossed to be comfortable, but one day I'm going to have to go buy a new handlebar with a wider section before the taper. It's just a matter of finding the time.... |

Hey, if I sell my house and we end up living on the lake, OWS are definately in the future. of course MA is probably not the most convenient location for everyone ![]() My top five for bikes....actually its a really short list. Put anything that says cannondale at the top of the list (Ive owned a few cannondales over the years, and loved every one of them, so it only makes sense for them to stay at the top). I don't see a slice in my future (the wife is never going to approve that expense), but Im definately considering picking up a used Ironman 2000/5000. Time will tell. |

![]() Tim, that is an awesome avatar. No tri bike on the horizon for me. I spent enough this year outfitting my road bike with computer, new clipless pedals, aero bars and getting a trainer! Plus I like my bike. Edited by treehugger 2009-12-21 7:50 PM |

Member![]() | ![]() tripletmom01 - 2009-12-20 7:36 PM I think if you are seriousla bout tris Id get a tribike right away... you are going to wish you had one. If you are not serious about tris and just like to ride.... get a road bike. But yes- it will be beneficial to have one for tris! hmmmmmmmm ![]() good thing I didn't make the big purchase yet... ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I've got some holiday money to spend on myself and, not surprising to my wife, I've decided to spend it on tri related stuff. Could use some guidance on prioritization of purchases. Some items I'm considering: |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I remember some earlier comment on this thread about "Training is 80% nutrition". Hadn't thought much about this in the past. I don't believe I'm working out long enough (up to about 90 minutes of sustained activity) to warrant eating during the workout. Am guessing that I might need to think about what I'm eating more before and after the training. Is it as simple as making sure you eat enough protein afterwards to allow your body to rebuild quickly? Any rules of thumb you guys follow? |

Could use some guidance on prioritization of purchases. Some items I'm considering: Well if it were me Id get the clipless pedal and bike shoes first. The bike fit is importnat but Id wait til I got the tri bike...unless youare very uncomfortable (Ithink its easier to fell good on a orad bike) Instead of a HRM Id get a garmin...Id die without mine Bike shorts...yes Id get some- I am actually more comfy in tri shorts...but we are all different. Yes- you will need a wetsuit once your distances increase.... they are almost like chaeating Yep- get them all |

Chocolate milk is the BEST recovery drink.... cheap and exactly to carb to protien ratio you need. I believ youwant a 4 to 1 carbs to protien ratio for recovery. I dont take in cals unless I am going 2 hours or more. The better foods I eat the better I feel training..its simple. |

I recommend you log you all your meals and check out the result after a week. For myself I try to take in about 4g/lb of carbs and .75g/lb of protein. I try to stick around 55% Carb, 25% protein and 20% fats. Fats are important also, make sure you consume the good stuff such as Omega 3. Reduce the transfat as much as possible. Learn to read the labels. In the Carb section, see what source they are coming from such as sugar or starch. Sugar is not bad, just depends on when you consume it, before a workout is best but not in the evening before bed. |
