Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Group! Just got in an easy 30 minutes on the trainer and am feeling better. I am hopeful that this being sick garbage is finally over. Anyways, my joints have been incredibly sore over the last month or so. I have never had this issue in the past, but I have also never beat up my body like this either. I have recently upped my protein intake to help with recovery and also started taking fish oil for omega -3 and glucosamine for joint soreness. I have read online reports about both and the "it works" vs "it's junk" testimonials seem to cancel each other out. I have taken protein in the past and I know the results are positive for me but was wondering if any of you have tried taking fish oil or glucosamine? Or any other supplements that may help? Thanks! Or any other supplements that may help? Thanks! I don't take any supplements other than iron (I am borderline anemic) and every 2nd day or so a multivitamin. What I find works the best for me is to drink a glass of soymilk (or regular milk if you aren't vegan or lactose-intolerant) in the 45min window after a tough workout. The drink has the right combination or protein and carbs and really aids in fast recovery. Of all things I've tried, this simple thing has had the greatest positive impact. That, and at the end of my post-workout shower, I turn the heat of the water to COLD to reduce inflammation of all the muscles and joints I've just worked. I don't have time for a full-on ice bath after each long-ish workout, so I just do that instead. Works great!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I take fish oil every day. I'm not sure how much it helps, though. I have tried glucosamine, and I actually thing that made my knees "loose" if that makes sense. They already have a tendency to hyper-extend, so I don't need them any more lubricated. If you're joints are bugging you, be sure you've got enough recovery built into your training. I always take one day off each week. Also, every 4th week (or so) dial back you volume. This recovery week will help your body adjust to the increase in activity. We're not as young as we once were. Except Krystyna. She's still young. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Krystyna - I do the same thing with the cold shower. Usually it helps but lately not so much Chad - Unfortunately, I think you might be right about us not being as young as we once were. I did a 50k trail run on Dec 5th and the last five miles were brutal and I beat up my legs pretty bad. Even after a month I'm afraid this soreness is still related to that and was hopeful after being sick for the last 5 days that I would heal up. Gonna try the glucosamine and hope it gives me the same "loose" feel as you b/c I could really use it right now. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() as the oldest member(I think) of the group I say listen to your body. I hammered myself a lot when younger. Now I pay. But what will help is to back off a bit after a brtal training fday or race-keep moving, but don't be afraid to let yourself heal up. Trying to find a way to lessen the aches is OK, but instead of doing a 10 mile run when you are hurting, do a session in the pool where you walk some laps and give your joints a rest. I am working my way back into competitve stuff and now cannot not listen to the body. Remeber its ok to take care of your body-its the only one your have |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Who else is sick and tired of this cold! I refuse to ride in the low 30s, but at least my running is getting off the ground well. And I start swim lessons today so that's another way to stay out of the cold. I'm 41 and I'm lucky enough to take only vitamins (Opti-men). I take extra care not to ramp up training too much and follow the 10% rule in everything I do. |

It was 26 degrees in Houston this morning - people are in "run for your life!!!!" mode right now. It is supposed to get even colder with single digit wind chills by Friday. It just does not get that cold here? We don't even have clothes for this type of weather so all the schools will probably be closed. All indoor training for me! However on Sunday morning I am running in a 1/2 mary. The AM temp is supposed to be 29 at the 7am start. I am going to use it as a training run instead of racing it so I'll bundle up!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In Arizona we don't have this cold you're speaking of, but I'll be complaining this summer when it's 110F for 2 months. That's when I train before dawn. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We have been hovering aroung a balmy 17 during the day-at 54 years-my joints don't deal with the cold well. Pool, bike trainer and treadmill for most. But I still enjoy a good x-country ski. Head to aspen next week and will take a training break, but will get in long days on the slopes and off days hitting the x-country trails |

That's when I train before dawn. I used to hate summer but now that I'm spending a lot of time outside, I've really started to miss it. While it gets up to 90 in Atlanta, you can always get a run in early or late. Now that I'm a triathlete, I can hit the pool or ride the bike when it's 90. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The cold weather isn't the downer for me. As a Canadian, born and bred, I am used to it. What really gets me down is how slow I get when running on uncleared, icy roads. Trudging through snow just doesn't feel like graceful running to me!! That, and if parts of my face are exposed to the wind and blowing snow for a long run, I get "freezer burn". I suppose I'm just grumpy because I haven't seen the sun in days, and my car is stuck in a snowbank. :P How does everyone else cope with winter? What are your feel good training tips? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I did my first swim lesson and for the first time I'm questioning this whole triathlon thing. Just did drills and I got progressively more winded throughout the hour long workout. I worked out only a couple of hours before the lesson. Next time I'll workout 8 hours before the lesson. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() swimming is much tougher than most people think-good news is that if you are already in good shape- with regular swimming your level will climb quickly- My fisrt swim 250 yds about did me in - withinn a month I had done 900 yds and felt fine. |

Trust me, drills are meant to question every swimmers ability to swim. I think they're only done to make swimmers suffer, so that they are grateful to 'just be swimming the stroke' rather than doing drills. |
