"Your problem is speed - Is that during the swim, bike, run?  Yes, the more you do it, you will increase your endurance and hopefully your speed.  Once your endurance is up you'll want to w
work on some speed sets (intervals) as well, that will really get you moving!"

Yes, it's mostly on the run - I haven't begun swimming yet.  My running mileage was low - 10-15 miles per week, I have moved it up gradually to appr 20 per week.  I don't seem to get faster just from increased mileage...so I guess it's speed work time...that being said, I am a slow runner, and there is not much I can do about that.  I hope to move up form"very slow" to "slow"...

After being sick for the last week with the flu, I was able to get 40 minutes inon the bike last night. Just did it on the trainer. Man was I winded and just didn't have the second gear.  Is it natural to go slower on a trainer than on the road?  Just seems like I can puch bigger gears on the road than on the trainer.

Some trainers are faster, some are slower, no trainer is alike. Mine is the same way, I tend to ride 20+ mph on the road and 15-16mph on the trainer at the same level of effort. Don't worry about speed, your level of effort is the only important thing you should consider.

What kind of trainer do you have?  How high are the resistance settings on it?  The gears you push should be pretty comparible if you have a good trainer with resistance settings.  You usually shold have a harder time on a trainer, no momentum to help you out!

Hey everyone!  Just wanted to catch up and see what's on everyone's mind.  Any training thoughts, stress, difficulties this week/weekend?

I'm back and am in full swing.  Hope all is going well and training is going as planned!

How's training going everyone?  Everyone seems quiet this weekend, hopefully a sign of hard workouts to come!

@mgpiper - you are correct, increased mileage isn't going to make you faster.  It's about the quality training, not quantity.  So think speed work, leg drills, intervals.

Of course you want to have some mileage in your legs to avoid overuse injuries, but a good combination of both shold get you from "very slow" to "slow" in no time!

@msaskin - How's the TNT training going?  I've heard some good things about their schedules, and it's definetly a good group to be part of.

How often do you travel?  At least you can always take your running shoes with you and get in some mileage on those weeks!

Hoping to get a little workout in this afternoon.  I have been working anywhere between 12 to 14 hours a day and still have a honey-do list at home a mile long.  to nice not to get a ride or run in though.

Training is going well.  TNT group sessions are once per week for each activity - I'm doing a total of 7-8 workouts/disciplines per week since TNT is working towards NYC Tri and I've got the Syracuse HIM 8 weeks after NYC.  Overall it's a great group of people to be training with - NYC has a large contingent so when I go out for my long solo runs on the weekend if I've wearing a TNT shirt I always get at least a few "go teams!" when I'm out.

I usually don't have a busy travel schedule, it just so happens I've had a few things come up recently that have kept me away from home.  I leave this wednesday for Houston, friday from Houston to Atlanta, monday from Atlanta to Raleigh, and then return home on Thursday.  Will be taking the time away to do core (easy to do in hotels) plus running - will swim when I get a chance.

In general, the long runs (6-7 miles typically) are starting to feel good now.  I also am getting used to being on a tri bike - feels slower due to the leg muscle differences but the real numbers show me 30 sec faster on the 3.2 mile loop we train on, and I feel much better running off the bike, so something's right.

That's good to hear that there is hope for me yet...Smile

What  leg drills do you suggest?  How often should they be done?  I did a 4 mile run last week with miles 2&3 at a pace 1 min/mile faster than my workout speed as a tempo run.  I will try some shorter speed work intervals this week.  I was thinking 1 speed or tempo workout per week is plenty at first...or should I do more?

On the bike I am just putting in time/miles - I think I finally have a good saddle - I did a 2 hour ride without pain, so that was great!

After a good warm up, try doing 10 x 1 min max efforts with a 2 minute recovery (walk).  After a couple of weeks you can decrease the recovery to 1 min and see how you do.

Another good one is doing 4 - 6 min 110% or race pace.  So if your goal for a race is an 8min/mi, you could do 4 intervals at about a 7:15 min/mi, with a 2 min recovery (walk) between each.

My first ride outside today.  As far as my previous question about speed on a trainer, I picked up about 2 MPH outside and that was with a pretty strong headwind (gust at +20),  Still only at 16 mph, but getting better and having fun.

Your outside NOT on a trainer, you should be having fun! )

How are you measuring speed on the trainer?  Same bike computer you use outdoors, or is it a computer on the trainer itself?  I noticed a lot of them that are included with the trainer aren't really to accurate.

Hmmm. Not sure where my post went from yesterday...it showed up blank.

anyway....I've been a lazy slug for the past few days and haven't done much except eat.

BUT....today is a NEW day.  I'm biking this afternoon so hopefully that will get me out of my rut.

It is the same computer that I use outside.  I think I just have my resistance up a little to much on the trainer.  As long as it works and I can get some time in the saddle, I really don't care.  Need to start swimming ASAP.  That is my weak point and I have 5 weeks before my first sprint.  Was swimming earlier in the year, but had some shoulder issues.  Only need to do 400 to 500 yards, but just need to get started on it.

Had a great bike ride yesterday afternoon.  Rode just under 17miles in just over an hour.  Had some really good splits.  Ran/walked 3miles early this morning before work.

Lifting weights after work today.

Think I'm back on track after my little hiatus.

Weather permitting I've got a bike/run brick scheduled for Sunday.  This will be the first time doing this going from an actual bike ride to an actual run as opposed to using a stationary bike and treadmill.  I'm wondering if there will be a noticeable difference.  The transition might be slow b/c I don't have a bike rack so I'll have to load the bike into the car before I can start the run.  I haven't been on the bike long enough to be comfortable with the busy roads outside my neighborhood.  Luckily, there is a low traffic national historic highway that a lot of area bikers use that's just a few minutes drive away.  This has been a great week of training for me, I did some sprints and hit a personal best for the 1 mile and felt productive in the pool as well.  If all goes well Sunday's brick will be the exclamation point at the end of a good week.

Awesome, good luck on the brick and let us know how it goes!

Don't worry about taking time to put the bike in the car, etc... as long as you do it in less then 10 min, while your still warmed up you will feel the effects on the run.  Take it easy and have a good workout!

I'm hoping to do a couple hours on the bike tomorrow morning and maybe get a short run in later in the afternoon. Then it's off to Oklahoma to visit my grandparents for a couple of days... so no biking option but will definitely run. Swimming has stopped... again, friggin strap broke right after my warmup earlier this week! grrr! I wonder if I can just buy the strap instead of buying another pair of goggles?
