Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I started a 6 week build phase today! Focus will be on high intensity workouts - including lactate intervals in all three disciplines, but will continue building endurance with long swims, rides, runs, and bricks. What's the average temp on race day? If it's above 55 I'll be alright, if it's above 50 i'll survive, if it's below that I might have to wear my wetsuit on the bike and run. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Unless a storm comes in, mid 50s to start the day is about right, and it will warm up nicely after that. The run can get hot |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I am at the Holiday Inn Oceanside Marina - through the train tunnel and across the parking lot just a few hundred meters from transition. Got a nicer place to make it easy on the sherpa On the good news front, I seem to be injury free (knock wood).... Ran almost 5 last weekend, ran 4+ twice this week, and will run 6+ on Sunday. So I am back on track. A very slow finish track, but I am just stoked to be able to get to the starting line. |

Expert 1322 Savannah | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I have a question about wheel selection because I hear that the race can get a bit windy. Disc cover on the rear, no questions there. But what about the front? Would an 808 be too much to handle? I see it right in the middle. Not as deep as a Jet 9 but deeper than a Jet 6/ Zipp404. |

Re: Wheels. Last year, I forgot to check wind conditions and rode 90 front and back. It was very windy on the back side of base and there were some white-knuckle-omg-I'm-gonna-die moments during the 25 mph no-pass downhill section. I was wishing I had my 50 up front then, but I survived and might have been marginally faster overall with the 90. If you're comfortable handling your bike and weigh 170+, I would say an 808 will be fine up front, but there will be some downhills that will require your full attention. No way to determine how bad the wind will be on race day and I still haven't decided which way I'm going this time around. If it looks like it's going to blow any harder than 20 mph, I may ride 50s (or just take it REALLY easy down that section). |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread How was the swim? I had a mini vacation over on Catalina Island, hanging out, 4 wheel driving in the interior, eating, sleeping, eating... Did get an 8 mile run Sat afternoon and it felt pretty good, except for mile 7, which was straight up Avalon Canyon road... yeeowch. There isn't much flat there, and coming down hurt too.... Today rode the CT even though it was sunny, by the time we got home, ate, watched a little Packers, it was 3:30, so decided to ride inside. Did about 30 miles of IM Canada, including Richter. Need to get more climbing in so Mother****er Hill doesn't spank me too badly |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread The swim went well. 60º isn't a bad temp for the water. Not getting a numb face or hands is always a plus. I swam on the south side of santa monica pier and did about 400 meters at a time and then walked/jogged back up the beach. More surfers out than normal, but it was fine since we were out further than them. I have a hard time judging my pace in open water. I think it's because I can't tell how far I'm actually traveling. I know we don't have to deal with it at oceanside, but do you guys have any tips or thoughts on how do deal with waves while swimming in towards the beach? I know about dolphin diving once you can touch the sand, but what about when you're between the breakers and the shore and a wave sneaks up behind you? I don't want to constantly be looking back while swimming in, but I kept kept getting swallowed by waves unless I looked back and saw them coming. I also got in a nice 90/30 T2 brick on Saturday and my run off the bike is feeling great. |

The best advice I got from swimming in through surf is to keep swimming, even if you get hammered, keep swimming forward, it's getting you closer to shore. When you're in the surf zone, the absolutely safest thing to do is steal a quick glance behind you every couple strokes. It shouldn't take much effort or slow you down, you can practice in the pool, but you should never turn your back on the ocean, especially while swimming. By looking back, you may be able to time them so you can ride the whitewater in |

Extreme Veteran 557 Woodland Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread About how many miles of the bike course are open for preview? Based off of what I know about Pendleton and from looking at the course map it seems to be the first 35 miles or so. I'm thinking about trying to get down there on Feb 19th for a brick. I'm scheduled for 1:45 bike and 45 min run. Also looking to do it on March 19th for a 2hr ride and 50 min run. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread I just happen to have a gmap for that.. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4257617 About 25 miles. Only part that might be a little off is from Vandegrift you veer off behind some buildings, and then back to Vandegrift, can't recall how that goes. You are not allowed to go up Pulgas to the turnaround. And I believe San Mateo/Christianitos is where the north gate is and you can't get on Camp P |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 California : Official Thread Yup, you can preview at least the first 25 miles, but that's not really the tough part of the course - just the scenic part. I know I posted this somewhere before, but in case anyone is interested, here's a Garmin Connect of the bike course. It shows the elevation profile and you can run the player to see where various mile markers occur along the course. For those interested in course previews, AIRE Urban in downtown San Diego is running CompuTrainer multi-rider group preview rides leading up to the race. I've done them a few times - for Lake Stevens and IM CDA. 3-4 hours, $30.00. Some of the best suffering money can buy. Destroyer - I think the 19th of Feb would work for me if you want to tentatively set up a group preview session. |
