Not sure I could do that...I, too, tried once but failed miserably. It depends on exactly what you follow -- there's been a movement towards "Paleo for Athletes" in which you eat whole proteins, vegetable, fruits and nuts except during a window of time starting 1 hour before your workout, going through you workout and during your post-workout recovery period. I've linked to the book below: http://www.amazon.com/Paleo-Diet-Athletes-Nutritional-Performance/dp/1594860890/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1293211877&sr=1-1 Its by Joel Friel who also wrote the Triathletes Training Bible. If you're interested I have a copy of the book, PM me your address and I'll send it your way. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED No soreness from just sitting on the saddle. Maybe it is just getting used to being back on the bike again. Sitting on a trainer where your body doesn't move around doesn't help I guess. |

If you can take you bike in for a fitting, just the right adjustment can also help. Even if you used to like your seast, our bodies chnge with time and it might not be the right one for you now. I sure found that out. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Kids aren't up yet, surprisingly. Merry Xmas to everyone. Had a great group Xmas Eve Mountain Bike ride yesterday morning. Just over two hours. Just under an inch of snow still on the trails, made it intersting and fun. I usually try to ride some lay down trees, it's great practice for balance. As I am riding across one yesterday, I slipped off due to snow, and landed on a branch sticking u,p right into the rib cage. I am feeling that this morning. Still had a blast though. Have a great day with your families. |

Champion 5615 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED As Kel's resident bike mechanic, she asked me to pop in and offer some advice on bike-related matters. Bike Trainer: With the Kurt Kinetic, you want to make sure you have full contact between the trainer and wheel. Best way to validate you have appropriate contact is to hold the solid disk with one hand, grab the wheel in the other and try to spin the tire without moving the roller. If it spins, you need more pressure. The best setup is just enough pressure to keep constant contact between the tire and trainer and prevent the wheel from spinning. That will keep the force curve accurate but minimize the friction to save your rear tire. I use Michelin Krylion tires which have a smooth contact area and good durability. Aerobars: As Kel will say, when it comes to deciding on aerobars, the best option is to buy a tri bike. Since that isn't always an option, clip-ons do provide a solid benefit on a roadie. The benefit does not come in the form of increased aerodynamic efficiency, the benefit actually comes from comfort. When a rider goes into aero bars on a road bike, their wind profile is roughly the same as if they were riding on the drops. If you've ridden any distance on the drops, you know how hard it is to support your body weight for a long period of time and you eventually go back to riding on the hoods of your brakes. The aerobars allow you to stay in that more aerodynamic profile much longer than if you were to ride without them. Aerobars should be positioned so that you lay in them and your upper body is supported by your skeleton instead muscles. With your upper body stabilized and relaxed, you can generate the same amount power from your hips for a longer period of time resulting in greater overall speed. If you get a set of aerobars, you should have the bike re-fit to take advantage of the new position. (edit: I used Profile Design's Carbon Stryke clip-ons before I got my tri bike and loved them. I believe that's what I put on Erica's bike last year, too.) Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. (and don't let Kel get too bossy with you) Edited by CubeFarmGopher 2010-12-26 9:56 AM |

Extreme Veteran 745 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED re: Aerobars So, I've just got a road bike and have no interest in getting a tri bike. The big thing that keeps me from getting aerobars is the fact that the brakes are sooooo far away. I also only do Oly distance or less. I have no real interest in longer distances. Where I typically ride, there are a lot of stop lights/signs, cross traffic and hills. My big fear is being in aero and having to act fast (and failing). Am I just being a luddite and missing out on some serious benefits? |

Where I typically ride, there are a lot of stop lights/signs, cross traffic and hills. My big fear is being in aero and having to act fast (and failing). Am I just being a luddite and missing out on some serious benefits? I know what you mean about the brakes being far away. Even on a tri bike, you have to come out of the aero bars to grab the brakes. I used aerobars for my first few Olympic races and it felt like they helped. At the very least, they made it more comfortable to just lay down for a bit, take the pressure off my upper body and just power from the hips. Although, that may have just been a placebo effect. Even if you don't use them consistently during your training, they would provide an additional benefit on race day because you normally have enough distance between riders to evade any issue plus most races have some level of traffic control. In the end, it is a matter of personal preference. If you can ride an Oly course in your drops, then the aerobars won't really buy you any additional speed. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I really appreciate the info on both the Kurt Kinetic and the aero bars. I do have trouble riding long in the drops. It gives me something more to think about. I will be heading up north to SBR in Orem to look at clipless pedals and maybe also clip on aero bars as then they can refit me too. The pedals are a for sure as I can practice on the trainer all winter |
