Billy, good idea but not sure how to do that?  May be just add it to my first post of the thread?

Kristina - have you checked out the Sprint training plans on BT?  There is at least one free plan that is designed for those with no experience. (also I am adding your races to my master list and will update soon)

My wifes brother in law is a marathoner and he battles plantar fascitis. His doc told him to run on softer surfaces(which isn't always possible), gave him an insert for his non-running shoes and apparently there are a few stretches you can do to loosen/warm up that tissue.

plantar fasciitis
Well, I don't want to seem like the evangelical barefoot guy, but since I switched to running barefoot or in Vibram Five Fingers my PF and other feet and knee problems are gone.  It's  not instant, you have to take your time and build up the muscles and tendons in your feet, but it's worked for me and quite a few other people.
I'll be running my Tris and all races this year barefoot or, more likely, in VFFs.

Ok, for me  - my goal with my very first event is to finish under the allotted 2:15 time slot.  I've my eyes set on a sprint event scheduled for March 12th.  Over the weekend I decided to simulate the event from the gym.  I know this is not real world, but it does give me some sort of idea as to my times, which were: Swim ... 10:30 - Cycle ... 30 minutes - Run ... 45 minutes ~15 minute mile pace.  And so given a few transition minutes between, the experiment tells me that I can finish within the allotted time, and certainly improve on these given more training time.

My regimen right now consists of:

  • Monday ... 1hr. spinning mainly hi-intensity zones 3-4 work
  • Tuesday ... swimming/running training and just trying to get consistent times and improve over these
  • Wednesday … rest day
  • Thursday … 1hr. spinning mainly lower-intensity zones 2-3 working on endurance
  • Friday … rest day
  • Saturday … swimming/running training
  • Sunday … road biking  - 20 miles or so (weather permitting) and just trying to get consistent times and improve over these?

Any thoughts – comments – suggestions, especially help with the training is very much appreciated.

Ciao ...

Marty - sorry, no help on the plantar fasciitis.  Haven't done any off road tri's but would love to do one.  May be 2012 goal to get one in.

Dorm - Will add your race to the master list, can you give me the name?  A few recommendations.  Depending upon your bike skills it may be better to drop one of the spin workouts and replace with a ride.  If you don't have a trainer for your bike it may not be possible.  2nd, you should throw in a few bike/run bricks (not every week but get a couple in).  Running straight off the bike is a little different.

One more tip (for everyone), Practice your transitions!  Free time savings.  I will post some of my transition tips later but simply taking 1/2 hour and practicing them can save a lot of time in a race.

Found one more sprint to do this year in June called the Snake Bite tri.  Shorter sprint distance but looks fun and only 1.5 hrs from home.  May take the family and camp out the night before (the race is reserving camping spots for racers).

Still short some folks posting their races, lets get them in.

I've had bronchitis since Christmas eve but kept going.  Today it finally caught up with me and I took the day off.   I'll try to hit the bike on the trainer in the AM.

Gary,
You have me down for the same race twice. It's my fault because I don't have an official signature made yet and I just type it each time. Unfortunately, I must have named it slightly different in different posts. It is actually just the one sprint tri on May 22.

Thanks

Gary, here are the races I'm training for are the:
'Azalea' - Wilmington, NC in March
'Salem YMCA Sprint' - Salem, Va in June

And thanks for the advice on both bike/run training and looking forward to your tips for transition.  I have been thinking a lot about this as it is 'free' time.  Ones that can quickly go from leg to leg definitely get an advantage on ones that make a clumsy transition.

Dorm, thanks I will add your race to the master list.

BTW, did you see the thread in the Tri talk forum about Bricks?  Bit of disagreement about how usefull they are.  IMHO, if you are new to the sport or to a distance (going from Sprints to HIM's for example) doing some bricks will give you a feeling of race day.  As you become more experienced they may not be as helpful but I still do them occasionally.  I am not an expert so draw your own conclusions.

Will try to post my tips today or tomorrow, if anyone has any tips feel free to chime in.

Managed a swim today at lunch and am going to ride the trainer tonight.

Happy Training!

Thanks for pointing out the thread and I agree that at this point it would help me in transitioning from bike to run.  So I will work some of this into my training regimen.

Too, I also read a couple of threads on penalties and thought what a bummer, with being a newbie to get penalized.  So I posted some frequent rules violation info here in case ones need to be aware:

I forgot my workout stuff at work yesterday. No workout on Wednesday, and probably won't get one in today. I'm edgy (bitchy) after 2 days of no workouts.

Hit the treadmill and weights last night.

Trying to work up the guts to hit the pool and learn freestyle stroke.

Hit the pool yesterday, late for masters class so it was a short swim.  Packed pool and we were circle swimming but for the first time I was the fast swimmer in the lane!  I am not a fast swimmer but working on it so I will take every little victory I can get.

Bert, are you going to get lessons?  Swimming is mainly about technique and lessons or masters class help a lot.

Hi Everyone!   I think tonight I will get my log updated for the workouts I have done, and update my goals for 2011.  I am terrible at logging on this site, but I do long in my notebook so I'll promise to get better at moving the data here.  Planned swim for tonight, but may trade it in for a treadmill run if the mood strikes when I get to the Y.

I put together my training plan starting Monday Jan 10, heavy on running until the 20 week Half IM plan kicks in the first week of March.  I have to say I am intimidated by the amount of running I will be doing, I have some sort of mental block against running for more than 45 minutes that I need to get through.

Hope everyone is having a good day!

I think you're right Gary.  Lessons are what I need.  Our local Y doesn't have a pool and the Lifetime I go to doesn't have swim lessons that I know of.  I'll check the Natatorium in town and start looking.  I'm a decent swimmer, but a complete newb to freestyle.

Agree the best thing you can do as you start out learning proper freestyle is to get help with technique!  It is hard going work putting in hundreds of yards and fighting with the water when a few tweaks and suggestions from someone watching you on the deck can make the world of difference.

Good morning!

Does anyone have long training planned for this weekend?  I just cannot get myself to bike or run outside now in this freezing cold, I have especially never liked working out outside in the cold, so I'll be doing pretty much all of my training inside until at least March.  I think for me it is the layering I have to do to stay warm and the sweating that ultimately happens when i get warmed up.  Plus, I find it hard to breath in the cold.  So what about the rest of the group, do you do a lot of training outside now if you are in cold weather (I think most of us are?), do you have any tips/inspirations that might force me outside?

Thanks!

Good morning all!

Luna - Welcome!!  Make sure to post your intro and your races for this year.  I will post the master race list tomorrow.

Managed a late night ride on the trainer.  Was going for 1.5 hrs but at 1 hr 10 minutes my knee was hurting and it was 10:30 pm.  Decided to bag it and save the knee.  Today is a swim and probably a run but LSU plays tonight and may can the run.

Transition tips are almost done and will post soon.  Okay, folks, time to chime in.  Even if you haven't worked out we need to hear from you!

Hi Gary- here's my intro:

STORY: I'm 33- lost about 50 lbs a few years ago, then 2 years ago quit smoking and started running- ran and injured myself doing the NYC marathon in 2009, and my PT told me i should run less and try biking or swimming. Sounded like a tri to me so i bought a commuter bike did my first two tris (sprints) last year.
FAMILY STATUS: Single, no kids
CURRENT TRAINING: just getting back into the swing of things after the holidays- really really have to work on my freestyle- just learning how to swim.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: Did a few 5 and 10ks, and the hyannis and sherox webster sprints
2011 RACES: black cat 20 miler in march, boston in april, then singed up for mooseman HIM, but don't have a road bike and can't breathe while i'm swimming. this is a problem.
WEIGHTLOSS: Really need to lose the 15 lbs. i've gained since august- i'm 5'3 so it adds alot to my frame

Luna (assuming you want to go by Luna) - Thanks for the intro, I will add your races to the list.  I have seen several articles on swim breathing here on BT and on in the USAT mag issue this month.  Can you give more detail?  Good luck on your Boston training!

Marcie - I have a 6 mile run for Sunday and a 2 hr ride tomorrow.  But temps here are a little better than where your at.  Lows are in the 30's and love running in cooler weather (40's is best).  Biking tomorrow will start in the 40's and will bundle up.  I tend to where a  balaclava or ski mask and breath thru the mask.  I have asthma and the cold does affect it.
