Extreme Veteran 828 North Shore, MA. | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group is OPEN Just been informed I have 1/2hr until dinner so I am doing my bio now........ Cheeky / Deb. I'm 36 and grew up in the UK but moved to the US 7 yrs ago. When I moved over here I took on my new husbands eating habits and ended up rather 'lardy'. We moved from NY to BOS I participated in my first Tri about 5 years ago and was totally humiliated and vowed never to do it again. Fast forward 18 months later I had a training partner and I had discovered the local Y and met some fabulous people. I finished another Tri and felt much better about things. I have since completed quite a few sprints, a HM, and a HIM.
Family. I am married to a wonderful guy who has no interest in doing a tri, but will gladly shlep my 'stuff' around, drive courses i 'might' want to do, travel with me, get up at 4am on race days, stand and cheer me on etc. etc. I also have 2 kids - Marcus (18) and Sophie (17). Sophie lives with me, Marcus lives with his Dad in the UK. She thinks I am completely mad, but will come to the bigger races with us. I also have 2 cats. One came from the Uk with me - Skinny mini -She is as cute as they come and I love her to bits. The other is Lex, a 23lb tur*, that is the love of hubby's life.
Current training. I am currently using a lot of weights, doing TRX and running.
This years races. Numerous 5K's Season opener King Pine Tri Patriot HIM Buzzards bay tri Mill city relay
2012 races Lake placid marathon buzzards bay tri mill city relay ??? Weight loss Urgh don't even ask. I can NOT for the life of me shift any weight. I dropped down to around 1K cals a day and got down to 156. Then started training and required more cals..... UP,UP, UP to 174. I'm trying to eat clean and i'm down to about 169/170 but its a battle. I am built more like a pit bull than a greyhound and my body just fights me the whole way.
My long term goal is IMLP. in 2013. I have 'just' secured a coach and will be doing a marathon there this coming year (almost the exact same course as IM) I'm tickled pink to be part of a great group. It looks like it will be a lot of fun, and I look forward to spending time getting to know you all and helping to motivate and be motivated!

Member 17 Leesburg, VA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group is OPEN Ok, so I think I'm all caught up now!! I will post a bio ... later. But for now, I have more important things on the brain, like spending my Christmas cash!!! I have a couple of cool tri gifts in mind and would like some input: (1) SwiMP3: http://www.amazon.com/Finis-SwiMP3-2G-Waterproof-MP3-Player/dp/B005J42CZ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1324847867&sr=8-2 This is probably my top choice right now because swim is my weaker sport and bone conduction just sounds really cool. I dont swim nearly enough, I think, because I'm kind of bored out there :-/ (2) some form of garmin forerunner (or whatever they're called these days). I like to listen to music so I've held back on the garmin because I have a nike plus which is a lot of fun and includes music. But the nike is far from accurate and still forces me to manually enter training logs -- which I'm bad at. (3) speed training program: http://prtrainingprograms.com/group-training/mechanicsofspeed I probably won't actually go to this consistently although it would be nice to have someone/something to stretch my comfort zone. Right now, I do speed work on the treadmill and i pretty much do the same routine. The real track has to be tons better. Or... (4) save the money for race registrations.. I have no idea what races I want to do, but I'm sure the cash will come in handy Sooooo, any thoughts fine folks? |

Coastal Carolina | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group is OPEN For the tech stuff you might want to check out dcrainmaker.com he goes really in depth on reviews and just did a comparison on a bunch of waterproof mp3 players. I've used the swimp3 before and I like it but currently use an armband from h2o audio for my iPod so I only have 1 thing to mess around with. Having a waterproof mp3 player definitely helps break up monotony of a long swim workout. Can't comment on garmins as I'm waiting for the 910... |

Oh, just found that you can get it on Amazon....just key in manatee Christmas ornament--it'll pop up. Edited by kgore 2011-12-25 4:31 PM |

Kirk! Good to see you again! Now I know I can't slack as you were one of the ones that kept me pretty honest in our last group. Last tri went pretty well. It ended up being a Du since the water in the Gulf was way to rough that day and the RD called the swim. Ended up doing a 400m sprint on the beach before T1. Strong winds too. I actually registerd as a Clyde for that race and ended up 2nd in my category. Same as my last race. Passed a whole bunch of people on the bike and then got passed by everyone on the run. I guess that's why I'm focusing on my run during the offseason. |

So I replaced it with another 405 and used it until my Dh got me a 310XT, which I like a lot and use most often. I also have my DH's hand me down bike computer Garmin that I use and he has one of the latest versions of the bike computer he really adores. He swears by DCRainmaker, too. Sorry, never have swam with tunes. The running program sounds good. I guess it all depends what your first goal is...to run faster/more efficiently, not be "bored" on the swim, or have a device that records it all down for you. Decisions, decisions.... |

I'm 41 years old and I live in Salem, Illinois( 60 miles east of St.louis, Mo.). I have been in Law Enforcement for the past 15 years. I also serve on our SWAT team and I'm kept extremely busy with work. This coming season will be my third year of competing in tri's. I started training for tri's to loose weight. I lost 60lbs and hit my goal weight of 185lbs. I have probably gained about ten pounds the past 3-4 months. It's time to get busy ! Family Status : I have been married to my wife/ Kerri for ten years. We have two boys (16, 10) and a highly motivated boxer as the family pet. Current training: Well, lets say it's a work in progress. I have slacked off the past four months..since my last sprint in Muncie, Indiana. I have been doing workouts here and there but not a lot of serious training. I had arm surgery early in the spring and it killed my plans for a HIM. 2010 races: Eagle Creek Sprint, Indiana and Gateway Triathlon, Carlyle,IL. 2011 races: I started the year out strong and got injured at work. After, surgery I competed at Muncie Sprint, Muncie, IN. 2012: I have already signed up for a HIM in the Wisconsin Dells (Rev 3). I also plan to compete in several OLY's leading up to my HIM. |

Here's a little about myself. My name is Allen and I live in Mansfield, just 10 or so miles from Sherwood Forest, the home of Robin Hood, set in the centre of England. I am married and between us we have six !!! children, all of which are grown up except my 8 year old daughter who is part of my inspiration for making this life change. We have a lovely soft Golden Retriever called Pippin who i hope will accompany me on my running work. (Although that should read walking for the first week or two). I am going to follow the 22 week couch to sprint programme to help me set some form of routine but it lacks a little detail, and my first race is only 17 weeks away so I would welcome your thoughts on whether this type of programme is the best way forward. I am going to need to make a significant change to my diet and will be picking brains over this. Please be patient if i ask some numpty questions, I am intelligent really, i just may not appear so at times. I hope everyone has been having a wonderful Christmas. It's 8am on Boxing Day here in windy cold England. Do you guys have Boxing day where you are??? Soon be time for my very first training session (a 20 min walk!) with my daughter scootering along with me and the dog. Lets hope the rain holds off. I'm offended. Slightly barmy??? No no no ... we are right barking mad. Speaking of barking ... how old is Pippin? The med-large breeds shouldn't be run until they're at least a year old (in some cases 18-24mos). And you're right about breaking her in easy, just like a human. If you're doing the Pates Total Sprint program, that should be fine. If you have 17 weeks, start at the 5th week mark IF you're able to complete the workouts. Remember, it's fine to walk or run/walk (like say run a minute or a few, walk a minute or a few, repeat). If not, start wherever you're able to. It's a good program and has gotten many people well-prepared for their first sprint. 17 weeks is plenty of time. As for the workouts themselves: for running, do them mostly at a conversational pace (like you could hold a conversation during). Any increase in effort should be limited to things like there being a hill in your path, or speedwalking hard. You can go harder on the bike and swim as they don't introduce such jarring forces to your joints, which are multiplied exponentially if you're overweight. If you want to incorporate weight loss, you'll have to look into changing your nutrition as well. It's a lot easier to cut calories than burn them. Lynn's the real expert on that here (and many of us who have lost weight in this group will also have tips and tricks, I'm sure). As I posted earlier, it was a lot easier for me to make one change at a time and incorporate that than make a lot of changes at once. Finally ... you seem very smart as well as enthusiastic to me, and numpty questions are our favorite kind. Bring 'em on! Edited by TriAya 2011-12-26 3:39 AM |

Good luck, Weebs! (wait ... what was your name, again? Did you ever say?) About the ciggies ... it will be easier than you think. It is not a monster or a bear. You're not quitting anything--focus on all the GOODIES you'll be getting! And take it a day at a time. Minute or hour at a time, if necessary. For the next hour, you get to enjoy free breathing, smelling good (you) and smelling things well; tasting well also. |

I was a smoker for about ten years and was pushing 1.5 packs a day and used chantix, never even had a pang to go back and am 3+ years out from quiting definitely worth looking at, although it does cause a bit of insomnia...
peak week for my half marathon training, which I have been horrible at sticking with my plan so going to hopefully hit all my runs this week. |
