As far as the strength training.. I've done px90 on and off (I get the most out of the Plyo and Core workouts), but you can do a lot on your own/or at the gym.  From a Groupon offer, I joined at "boot camp" for 30 days and I've learned a lot of good quick workouts from there that I plan to take back to my gym (basic stuff like kettle ball, planks and I love TRX!) You don't need to do a lot to see some good results!  I'm off to my last session today.  A lot of these places offer free trial memberships.

My hubby gave me a great xmas present...we converted a room/attic space (Finished but no insulation, baseboard heat) into a Tri cave.  Moved my trainer, bike, weights, resistance bands, etc...up there and he installed a flatscreen so I can watch my spinvales DVDs.  Bring it winter!!

Wow! Lucky you! I just have a little corner of our damp, dusty basement... It's not too bad, really, but yours sounds MUCH nicer! Enjoy!

(edited because apparently I can't spell....)

I don't know what tri i am doing next year but I will be doing a duathlona along with a half marathon. I ride a flat bar road bike or performance hybrid (Cannondale Quick 6). This year, I added bar ends and skinnier tires plus I rode more. am still a slow rider but I did see improvement.

Anyway, TriColumbia, the race directors for Iron Girl, Eagleman and other triathlons and foot races is offering a Winter Bike Series.
It is $100 for 8 weeks (1x week) using your own bike on a bike trainer (they supply that).

Would it be beneficial for me to do that along with 1 or 2 regular spin classes, to help me improve speed and performance?
It will also help me keep consistent as well.

Any thoughts or opinions?

I just looked up the info, and if you think you will do your best to make the classes, I think it's a good deal and could be a great program to participate in. My guess is that it will be more or less a progressive series of classes, and will involve some pretty focused hard work on the bike. I think you're likely to get more out of a class like this than by spending an equivalent amount of time on your own bike trainer at home (unless you're pretty good about pushing yourself on the trainer...). I think you should go for it!

How many of you have bike trainers at home?  Honestly, I would rather have a spin bike, but I don't have room...so a trainer seems like the only workable option.  I'm concerned if I will get the use out of it though.  You who own them, how often do you use them?

I have a computrainer that I use quite frequently since my time outside is limited.  Got a good deal on ebay, and I have been very impressed with its capabilities.  I'm following Jorge's biking with power plan at the moment -- just finished testing last week; 20 minute power average was 260 and 5 minute power average was 305.  Seeing some good results from his plan thus far.  I'm about halfway through the program.

Once the weather gets nice in mid April, I will take the bike outside, but I need to be ready for HIM in early June so really needed something to get me through the winter months.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, All!

No workout for me today- too much going on with family.

Swim Help needed:

I am a terrible swimmer- I really learned in a local lake as a kid, and have no form. I've barely been in the pool this year, so I'm really starting my training from the beginning.

Currently, I'm doing 400-500 yards per workout- with just 100 yard sets.  My wrist is still recovering from a torn ligament, so that at the end of 500 yards, I am in some pain. My question is: where do I go from here?

Any advise is greatly appreciated. -Heidi

No workout for me yesterday either... not sure if I'll get one in today or not.

Re: swimming - the best advice would be to try and find swim coach to work with if that's in the budget and you have the time. Form is so important for swimming.... If you can't find a coach to work with, you might want to check out some of the Total Immersion self-coaching materials. When I started triathlon training, it had been years since I had done any swimming, and my form and endurance were pretty bad. I spent a couple of months after my first season working through the Total Immersion program on my own, and I think it was really helpful for helping my develop a more efficient stroke and get to the point where I could swim longer distances and feel less fatigued by it. I'm not convinced that it's the "fastest" swimming technique, but I do think it's a great place to start for adult swimmers who need help getting more comfortable and efficient in the water.

Turtle, Please keep in mind that I have the swimming form of a wounded moose, so anything I have to add may not be so valuable.

That said, everything I've heard on swimming points to form & technique. Time in the water will help, but only if you are using good technique. I agree with the coach suggestion (although not a cost option for me right now) and with the TI suggestion. If a coach is not an option, how about a masters program? Also, if possible, can you have someone take video of you swimming? Then you'll know where you are, and you may be able to concentrate on a few key points to help you out. I have found that if I key in on one aspect (stroke efficiency or breathing or rotation) for a few laps during a workout, I am able to see improvement across the board. I've also done some laps with a snorkel, which helps me concentrate more on stroke efficiency.

Today was my third straight day of running. My knee has been unaffected at this time, so I will begin to ramp up some distance in the coming weeks.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas. Did anyone get any tri stuff? My MIL got me a few cool things (Bento box for the bike & a cycling jersey).

Have an outstanding day

Subject: Training Update

Hi guys. I am really terrible about logging workouts.  I'll start with a brief update. I am currently doing pretty good about biking and running, but only swimming ave. 2 times a week. I am pretty strong in that area, but wish to add one more workout per. I currently run 3 times a week and use my spinner 3 times a week as well. Sometimes running and biking on the same day, or running/swimming.

We bought my son a mountain bike for Christmas so, as a family we've started doing some off road biking on weekends. There is a state forest near our house with awesome bike paths into the deep woods. Very fun. I also participate in a boot camp through the Y once a week for added spice.

That pretty much sums up my current training. I average about 3 miles for the running workouts and an hour on the spinner. Always trying to add a bit of added intensity into each workout...

I have a former knee injury that makes me cautious in regards to running. So far though, I've been pretty pretty fortunate to not experience knee pain. I've been inching up the distance on the runs.

I did the Tough Mudder last month, which was a 12 mile run, and was surprisingly ok. So hopeful for the upcoming triathlon season.

This summer I plan to do my first Olympic distance triathlon.

That pretty much sums it up for me. :-)

Hope everyone has had happy holidays so far.

Recovering nicely from an 8 mile run this afternoon.  My longest run in quite a while, and although it was no land speed record, I finished it despite being cold.

I'm surprised I'm feeling as good as I am seeings how this is usually the point in my training when my IT band starts to flare up.  So far, so good.  I'm crossing my fingers tomorrow feels the same.

Ug = not looking forward to work tomorrow.

Hooray! Thank you SO much for taking me! I really do appreciate it

I will be on here everyday now that I am back from Christmas vacation in Houston. I have 3 half-marathons coming up (1 in Baton Rouge early Jan, 1 in March in New Orleans, and 1 in April in Nashville). I don't run hard (I am REALLY slow) but I am worried how that will effect my try training. I am also going to be joining a local triathlon group in my town and doing weekly bike rides to work on my training.

I have about 70 more pounds to lose in addition to the 70 that I have already lost so I am very dedicated I just worry about getting injured. How should I go about training? I am still working on my running by using the Couch to 5k (C25K) program. Do you recommend getting a program from this site? I just don't want to do something wrong or something that will not benefit me in a race. If I am going to do this I am going to do it correctly!

I am going to begin logging my training tomorrow! No more excuses!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas/Holiday!

I'm so glad to be in this group! Sorry about the late intro--things got a bit busy this week!

NAME: Amy/givemashot

STORY: I am 36. This will be my 5th tri season. I was a competitive swimmer from age 6 to about 16, when I dove on my high school team for 2 years. Went to college, got married had the first kiddo...which we all know means that by the time I graduated college I was NOT in very good shape. I was able to reconnect with a friend of mine about 5 years ago, and we promised each other we would get back to being training buddies. She worked at a local rec center at the time, and we were both challenged by one of her coworkers to do a triathlon. May of 2008 I did my first tri-- a pool sprint. Over the years, I've done sprint tri's, a weird half-sprint, half-oly distance tri, a half marathon, metric century bike rides, and then a ragnar-style relay run this past fall. I had planned to start 2011 out with a bang with a half marathon in California in January with some other BT'ers, then a few other local sprint and oly tris, and my first half-iron tri at Vineman in July. All my plans had to be put on hold when I crashed my bike in January 2011, and broke my upper arm. From there my family had some sort of minor emergency happen every month through about July--basement flooding with black water, pneumonia, appendicitis, etc etc etc. I think 2012 will be a much better year for us! I ended up doing a pool sprint tri, and a relay run in 2011.

FAMILY STATUS: I am a married mom of 2, I work part-time as a pediatric nurse. My kids are a little older--my boy is 9 years old, and my daughter is 15.

CURRENT TRAINING:  Not a whole lot. I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to get myself back into a rhythm of training and planning for races. I have a bit of a mental roadblock though. Over the past year, I made grand plans and had several training plans written specifially for me, but fell completely short of even getting halfway through the plan, let alone actually doing the races. Sometime I had good reasons (medical usually), but sometimes I just plain let anxiety rule my brain and stop me from even starting a workout. I decided to cut myself some slack and just enjoy the tri sport(s) and the comraderie I get from it. I'm feeling like it's time to get back to business, though. I've been gaining weight and feeling generally yucky. So, lookout world, here I come! lol

2012 RACES: I am hoping to do a spring half marathon, then a century bike ride, the bike portion of an Olympic relay at the St George Tri in May, I will be a sherpa for some friends at the Boise half Iron in June, then I'll do a sprint tri in August, a women's fun 5k obstacle run also in August, and the Red Rock Relay (the ragnar-style relay I did last year) in Southern Utah in September. I might do another sprint tri in the fall as well. I also am involved with race directing. I am on the directing committee to put on a pool sprint tri and kid's tri in June, and a Marathon/half marathon/5k/kid's race in October, which doesn't leave as much time for me to do my races as I'd like.

GOALS: To do my training consistently, drop 15 pounds and a few % points body fat, and enjoy myself! I hope to go up to Oly and Half Iron distaced in 2013.

Other: I need help with nutrition, how to stay consistent with training, and how to plan for different distances since I'm not really just doing a certain distance of tri. Also, you wouldn't expect it with my swim background, but I am super afraid of open water swimming. I've never tried water skiing because I don't want to be in the lake. I've been on a jet ski once. My first tri with an open water swim was just over a year ago. And the last time I went and trained in open water, there were some new weeds growing in the water that I didn't see, but they sure grabbed onto my ankle. My spinning around and thrashing around didn't help much either! Good thing I can laugh at myself. I love tri, the people I have met, and the lifestyle.

OK, I have not yet figured out this year's races, but I am getting close (I hope). One challenge is that my youngest is getting married, which puts a strain on the budget (and on time). The other challenge is that this year is my 25th anniversary, and we are going on an Alaskan cruise (more time challenge). Now, please don't misunderstand, I am not complaining. All of this is ultra cool, but it will make racing a bit more challenging this year. So, here is the current plan:

Mid March - SRQ 1/2 Marathon
Early May - Expedition Everest Challenge
Early July - Local sprint tri
Early September - Volunteer at local sprint tri
Late October - Rev3 Oly in Fl (depends on Rev3 and local gov bodies getting everything together)
Late November - PAL 1/2 Marathon

I am a bit run-centric, which is good because that is where I need the most help.

Hello!

I'm struggling with getting the workouts in, with all the holiday commitments. But, I did manage to get a 50 minute ride in yesterday.

Today, I've got my gym bag packed and waiting in the car. The plan is to hit the Y between work and a dinner party tonight.

I took the suggestions offered, and contacted the pool director at the Y to see if there's a class that is right for me.

yeah - this is a challenging few weeks with all of the holiday stuff going on... I try not to sweat it too much, and just figure if I can get a few workouts in, I won't loose too much ground, and can be prepared to get more serious when the kids are back in school, etc. I got a short ride in yesterday morning with my brother-in-law, who was here to visit with his family, and is getting back into cycling. It was a beautiful day here for a ride! Got a run in this morning. I'll just play it by ear for the rest of the week - no hard and fast plans. Once the holidays are over, my goal is to get more serious about trying to establish a training routine I can stick with for IM training. The volume building won't start too seriously for a while yet, but I just want to try and get into a regular schedule for rides, runs, and swims that I can more follow as training progresses.

So did anybody get any good tri stuff for the holidays? The biggie for me was the new power meter, which arrived before Christmas, but was my main gift. I also got a new ipod and a nice waterproof mp3 player that I'm looking forward to using trying out in the pool. I'm also probably going to get myself a new saddle some time in the next few weeks...

I got the H2O shuffle waterproof case.  It was from my husband, even though I ordered it, (initially) paid for it, wrapped it, and hauled it to the Christmas morning locale.

Enjoy the mp3 in the pool, that has got to be awesome. I'm ready to try anything to take the boredom out of laps.

I'll be testing out my new Hi-Vis bike jersey and bento box during today's ride home. This is only my 3rd ride in December. I am trying to shrug off the post holiday food coma, and the food seems to be winning.

I ran 4 miles last night enjoying the last week of Christmas lights. I am trying to increase my running distances.. but I am soo slow. Mother nature does not help either as I am 5'1.

I average about 12:30 mile for an jog pace and I am always feeling guilty about being out so long... I should get up early and run.. but that's no fun...

One of my New Year's resolutions..

Do my workouts early in the morning.

Kate, I really love the early morning runs. I suggest them to everyone, if it is at all possible. Of course, I am biased since running in Fl can be brutal. I love the stars & moon & the peace and quiet of the early morning. I also like the fact that I have gotten it done before anything else, and the run usually helps start my day off right. If it is your goal, I would suggest that you start getting up a few minutes earlier each morning. Pretty soon you'll be up fairly early
