Most folks who got pulled from the water this year was likely due to a freak wind storm that really churned the lake up on the second loop. The bike course was hard the second loop and climbing was rough...that said I'll be back in 2014 as I thought it was the greatest race in the world. That was the description I was looking for! Freak wind storm! If we can keep that out of our vernacular for 2013 - I will be very happy! |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread So does anyone have a trainer, specific program they are using? I am using the free one off of trifuel. 36 week program. I have looked it over many times and I think it looks pretty good although somewhat generic. I've followed a friends half program and it worked out really great for me. I was only hoping for under 5:30 and got 5:11 so I think that although might not be specific, but if followed it will get you where you want to be. Or at least for myself. Thoughts ideas? |

I took a look at that 36 week plan and it looks good, and complicated, to me. I bet it works well for most people. I know myself, and if it's too complicated, I wont follow it. I am positive I wouldn't follow that plan and I hope it knocks it out of the park for you! I am following the "Super Simple 20 Week Ironman Training Plan" that has been in Triathlete magazine off and on many times throughout the years. It can be found here. |

I'm going to do the 30-week plan in Don Fink's "Be Iron Fit" book for the bike and run and join a master's swim class. There are three plans to choose from, "competitive", "intermediate" or "just finish". Workouts are based on time instead of distance and are designed to be time efficient for busy people - which I always seem to be. |

Not a fast swimmer but I feel comfortable and semi strong in the water...my first loop going easy was 41 minutes my second fighting much harder to hold a good line and move forward 51 minutes. |

Extreme Veteran 875 Issaquah | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread There's a thread in the main page today talking about CDA, and someone posted this video. For those of you that have done this is it better to start to the right side or left (as you enter the water)? I really don't mind contact, but why swim in the middle of that when you can swim to the outside/inside at avoid some of it?
I'd wager a bet the time spent swimming a slightly longer course, if you are on the outside, is less than the time treading water, or fighting through the middle of that mess. |

Expert 1115 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread From my experience this year, starting in the middle and being pushed under 20' out and swallowing a lot of lake, and not finishing the swim, I would say yes. Either that, or wait in the back and let the mob go first. I will be doing one of the two for 2013. |

I'd wager a bet the time spent swimming a slightly longer course, if you are on the outside, is less than the time treading water, or fighting through the middle of that mess. If you start after the mob you won't get the benefit of a strong draft to that first turn buoy. I started about 3/4 of the way back, slightly to the right of center, and was practically pulled the first 900 It was an awesome experience, on the beach there is not a lot of space left. right or middle. You more then likely will get bumped no matter where you start. Edited by kenbert61 2012-09-22 8:35 PM |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I haven't really decided where to start on the swim yet. I'm MOP swimmer for the most part. I'm able to hold my own and let others know that my space is not their space. But I agree with staying about part 3/4 of the way in so you can draft the whole way. When I did Lake Stevens I stayed next to the buoys and would draft off of whoever was in front of me and jump onto the next person. It was a really great way to swim easily yet swim fast. I still think I will start with that trifuel 36 week program. I have till like January to change it up if I am finding that I don't like it or it doesn't work for me. But I tend to like a very detailed program as my HIM program was very detailed and it paid off for myself. |

New user 219 Bonney Lake | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread My first year I started real close to the front and to the left right along the line. I thought I was further back than I was and was fun yet crazy. This year I stayed to the left and just went further back. I times that I lost 30 seconds due to waiting for the crowd to go. However my swim anxiety of swimming with the mod was a lot lower and I was able to start to swim my way up to the pack. By the time I was there it was thinned out just a bit and my swim was much nicer this year. I have talked to people who start way over to the right and it works for them. I think it comes down to comfort. I do not sight very well so being right on the buoy line works well for me. |

So here is the first question. Has anyone transformed from a 50ish min swimmer to a 3.30 ish IM runner in 10 month ? Any advice is appreciated. Also, does any one has an experience racing in IMLou and CdA? What are the differences, what would you focus the most on cource, weater wise Nick

I'd wager a bet the time spent swimming a slightly longer course, if you are on the outside, is less than the time treading water, or fighting through the middle of that mess. That looks nuts. Jumping into 59 degree water and getting beat up for 2.4 miles? Who'd do something so stupid? My plan was to start out wide to the buoys and I thought I started our pretty far to the right on the beach, about 2/3 the way back from the water. However, about 1/2 way to the turn buoy I noticed the crowd has pushed me almost against the buoy line. Short of waiting until (almost) everyone else has left the beach and then entering the water, I'm not sure how I could have avoided the proverbial washing machine.

Strongly considering a second time next year. Would've done '12 but was deployed to Afghanistan. |

Strongly considering a second time next year. Would've done '12 but was deployed to Afghanistan. When I signed up two weeks ago it was a little over 80% full. I didn't see the percent full but someone that signed up the same time as me said they saw it. My guess would be around 85%-90% full, but again, that is just a guess. |

I'll go for the tap-in putt on this one... Although I haven't raced Louisville - a good friend of mine has done it twice. The most obvious differences - river swim (often not wetsuit legal) versus a lake swim - and for most of us wetsuit mandatory! Louisville is a time trial start - one racer at a time, versus CdA mass start. Prepare for contact and sharing one space with 2399 of your closest friends... |

Thanks! To be honest, swim is the least of my concerns . What about a bike course, is the new one hillier than the old one, faster? |

New user 339 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread @Nick I never rode the old one.... most people thought it was going to be easier and faster because it had a lot less turns...however the bike times were slower for most. advice... practice climbing...the second out on the bike loop was the toughest part of the race for me. |
