Hey Folks,

This event will be my first full Ironman.  I really excited about this race.  I completed the Ironman Longhorn in 5:52.  I felt pretty good after the 70.3 and felt like I could have pushed even more.  I realize there are a lot of factors that can determine finishing times, but I'm trying to set a goal time. Is it reasonable to set a goal of 12hrs?  I'm just curious how some of the transitions went from 70.3 to 140.6 for some of you triathletes out there. any info would be cool!

supposedly, the formula is, in an Ironman you expect double your 70.3 time then add an hour.  BUT depends on how long ago that 70.3 was and your fitness level in comparison, so really, take that with a grain of salt.

can you do 12 hour Ironman, of course.

Nice job on your half! I did a half 2 months before my first Ironman and I finished in double the time plus 2 and a half hours. There are so many factors that go into such a long day its hard to judge your pace/finish on just one metric.

I'll probably just be setting finishing goals not based on the half I'm doing this year but rather how my pace is looking like in the weeks leading up to the race. Hope that helps you!

I've done two fulls and double plus an hour was generous. I did 5:50 and 12:03 two years ago and this year 5:27 and 11:08. Same races with similar courses between the halves and full.

Double the time and add an hour would be pretty accurate. But it all depends on your fitness level. I did longhorn in 5:21in 2011 then did lonestar in 5:05 and ended up with a 12:19 full time. But there are so many factors because of the heat and humidity. I blew up with 10 miles to go and If I would of focused on nutrition more, I could of gone around 11:15 or so. But that is ironman for you. You can do sub 12 if you maintain a proper training plan and focus on hr and nutrition. Best of luck for all those IMTX. I'm doing Arizona to avoid the humidity (I hope. Haha)

I signed up for IMTX yesterday and I'm pumped! It'll be my first full, I've done 3 halves. Honestly i'm just starting back on the bike and swim...i've been run training mostly ( wasnt really planning on an IM until recently). I know i'm fit, but any suggestions for training? All i've heard is bike, bike, bike.

Welcome to the group. The good thing is you have a few halfs to work with. Find a good training plan that hits all three disciplines and maybe based on your expectations of the race, such as just finish, compete, pr, etc.

How is the bike? According to Ironman, it is supposed to be fairly flat. Would you agree?  I will be using a road bike instead of a tri bike. How are the winds on the return trip back to town?

I would say it's fairly flat with miles 20-70 considered "rolling."

Here's my Garmin file from 2011: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/88047320

Wow nice bike split - Very helpful... 2700ft of climbing? That sounds pretty rolling. What are the roads like out there? Pretty smooth? Wide?

Thanks.  I think I can get close to a 5:05 bike split for next year... weather depending.  I spent nearly four minutes not moving as I made a potty break and a stop at bike special needs.  I'll skip special needs and maybe pee on myself on the bike.  Embarassed

The wind can be a great equalizer if we catch a bad day.  2011 and 2012 weren't "that" bad from a wind perspective.  Winds that time of year normally come from some southerly direction and strong winds would mean a miserable second half of the bike as it's mostly south.

The roads are pretty decent by Texas standards.  There's a couple of patches of Texas chip seal but nothing too bad or too long.

I was looking at your power file.  What was your NP for that ride?  Also, did you ride your H3 at IMTX?  If so, did you go with a 19mm AW or 20mm SS tire?  Wondering how those tires hold up on the Texas roads. I would think a H3 would do well on that course.

My NP for that ride was 194 watts if memory serves.

I didn't use the H3 at that race.  I used a Jet 6 front.

I rode the H3 for 2010, then switched to a Jet 6 front in 2011 and went back to the H3 this year.  My tire choices for the H3 have been either the 20mm Conti SS or the 20mm Vittoria Corsa Evo CX.  The Conti SS is kind of a delicate tire so I'm very apprehensive about using it for a IM but I did use it for both the Texas 70.3 and Syracuse 70.3 this year.  I used the Vittoria at IMAZ.

What do you think of the bike course? Any traffic?

It's an open course with the exception of the section through the national forest so there will be vehicular traffic.  It's mostly rural areas once you're away from The Woodlands so it's really not that bad.

I can't speak for 2012 since I didn't race but there was a really bad intersection in 2011 where traffic was backed up for a couple of miles but I think that had to do with construction issues going on at the time.

The first 85 or 90 miles have very little traffic. For the first 30-miles, it's too early in the day for traffic to be very heavy. For the middle section of the course (north of 105) the roads are lightly travelled, so traffic really isn't much of an issue.

For the last 20 or 25 miles, traffic is heavy and riders need to exercise caution. However, where traffic is really bad, the shoulders are BIG. FM 1488 has the heaviest traffic, but the shoulder is wide enough in most places to ride 3 or 4 abreast. In 2012, they did a great job getting bikes through the intersections with no delays.......not so with the cars. They were backed up for a few miles in some spots.

How about the road condition? Are there any rough sections or is it mainly smooth roads?

Mostly smooth, some chip seal.  You can definitely tell when you cross the county lines due to road quality.

Well, 2012 is just about over.  January is right around the corner and the next 16 weeks will be big/important was we build for this race.  Wishing everyone the best in their training.  I'm going to tackle Panama 70.3 in Feb as my tune up race.  Looking forward to a 90 degree/75% humidity day in Panama as an early reminder of how freaking hot Houston will be in May.

Speaking of tune-up races.  Is anyone doing the 70.3 in Galveston (I believe 4/7 or something like that) as a tune up for IM TEXAS?  Veteran ironmen:  do you think the events are too close?

I've been using the Don Fink plan for the past few years which  is built around a HIM about 8-weeks before the IM. The dates for Galveston and IM-TX are not perfect, but they're pretty close and work well with only minor adjustments to the DF schedule. I've done both races for the past two years. This year I decided to change things up a bit and plan on skipping Galveston and doing a few shorter tris and bike races during the spring build-up instead.

I think that's a good tune up race, I've always liked doing a half 6-8 weeks before a full. I was planning on doing 70.3 texas but they moved the White Lake Half in NC the same weekend and it's closer.

I am! Not a vet though, but coming from Minnesota, a fight with the heat and humidity is needed. Last two runs have been below zero temperatures.
