slowbuthappy - 2013-03-21 4:46 PM Anybody know anything about this years swim start? I keep reading on triathlon talk about WTC changing the mass starts - I heard that this one was pretty brutal last year owing to the beach area being very narrow.

Great question.  I would be shocked and very disappointed if they moved away from the mass start, but I have heard they could change it away from a beach start to an in water/treading start.

I have a friend that works for the WTC and is the head of the swim for a lot of their races.  He mentioned this in conversation a few months back.

is the intention of the possible in water / treading start to give all the athletes a little more space? I don't mind this kind of start but wondering what it would achieve?

hey guys,

I know your all busy with training but I'm new to triathlons and I was looking to register for the 2014 Ironman Mont Tremblant. I am a very strong runner and a good swimmer but fairly new to cycling. I don't reallly know anyone that competes in triathlons so any advice on where this goal is attainable would be great.

Thanks

I am not the strongest cyclist either so I am starting to increase my volume now for next years race. If you go onto the website for IMMT you can see the course profile with grades and elevation changes to familiarize yourself with what you can expect. I am learning to get better at climbing and increasing my power to prepare me for the hills on the course. I am going up to volunteer this summer so I will be able to preview the course in my car to try and visualize it better. I would suggest starting with one of the free training plans here on BT under the programs section.

Hi Guys,

Press conference by the race organizers yesterday. It was all in french but here is the summary of it :

- IMMT was named sporting event of the year here in Canada, notably in front of the NHL all star game that took place in Ottawa.

- IMMT will broadcast live in a similar fashion to Kona World Championships, over a webtv program.

- The 2013 course was revealed. Very similar to last year. They did say that the boats at swim start will be moved. Congratulations on listening to last year partipants comments. No mention of a wave start.

Lots of statistics for last year's events (combined 70.3 and Full)

4500 participants, 75% male/25% female
Coming from 50 different countries
47 US States represented and 9 canadian provinces
70 % of non-canadian visitors did not know the region before registering
49% of responders were visiting the region for the 1st time
Each athlete was accompanied by 4 persons on average
23% came in the weeks before to train on the course
11,000 visitors were present during the events on top of those accompanying the athletes

More infos are coming out ... i'll get back to you with the rest !

Hey Guys

Does anyone know of a hotel in the area that might have accommodations still? I am trying to find something for a friend of mine who is volunteering and having a hard time finding a place. Any info would be great thanks.

A little more than 15 weeks to go.  How's everyone fairing so far?  My hubby just hit me with the news we may be moving to CA this summer - puts it at 50/500 should know more by next week.

Will definitely make for some interesting training.

First ever IM, second summer of triathlon.  Doing a couch to Ironman in a year timeframe.

Those miles look crazy based on previous years.

Training is going well, planning a trip to Tremblant to ride and run the course within the next month.

yeah the average training "time" per week (suppose to be distance per week in kms), is way off imo.

I am guessing that either most are lying and just talking about their peak weeks, or they made up the numbers, or these are average Pro numbers.

Don't know if anyone saw this yet, but IMMT will have wave starts, part of a new 'SwimSmart' initiative by Ironman.

I'm OK with it as long as the entire AG is in the same wave, otherwise you don't know who you're racing against if going for a Kona slot.

Yikes - I had thought that they would change the swim start but never realized kit would be changed to a wave start with floating rest stops!

Yup, just saw that.  I'm sure they'll keep the AG's together which is a must, but I'm still very disappointed about this.  Part of the IM experience is the mass start.

perhaps wave starts lessen the initial congestion, but cause the secondary effect of faster swimmers of later waves running over the slower ones of earlier waves.

As a first timer to Ironman I was blown away with those stats, actually made me a little nervous.

Currently I am around 300k per week. (7k swim / 230k bike / 63k run). No idea what is normal I completed a Try-a-tri and kept training after that. Been going all winter, and since Feb with a personal coach and plan for this race.

Already been up to the course two weekends ago, and the back section of the bike ate me up but then again also had a dehydration issue. Love the run course, excited for that in August.

I hear yeah. I am around the same volume you are, but I think it is more about the time and quality of training you put in rather then distance. If my average bike speed was 21 mph Vs 18 mph, I would be putting in 65 more miles a week for same amount of time (8 hrs). I am just going to continue and trust the plan I have.

I made a quick map of the bike course and came up with about 7400 feet of climbing. So needless to say I am going to continue to find big hills to do repeat climbing.

74 Days to go....

I did my best to map it out on gmap-pedometer.com and then make a GPX file to load in to the BT site. Not to sure how accurate my map was but it gave me an estimate.
