Veteran 157 Rainy WA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED jeuart - 2012-12-31 9:02 AM I just used the nutrition tracker for the first time. My eating habits have been out of control and I need to get back on track so I can lose a little weight. It was a big pain in the butt. It definitely didn't seem like it was sustainable. It took too much time and the user interface was pretty cumbersome. Anyone out there have experience using several types of diet trackers and have a recommendation on which one is easiest? There's just no way I will actually stick to it if it takes 10 minutes/meal to track.
I used MyFoodDiary.com one year. The interface is really easy. I'm not positive, I think it's $10/month. |

Veteran 157 Rainy WA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED JREDFLY - 2013-01-01 8:14 AMmy first New Years Day Plunge. Went into the water at Nantasket Beach (near Boston) with a couple of my boys this morning, water at 40.5 F degrees, air 34 F, winds at 44 mph (very windy), Windchill at 23 F. Talk about invigorating plus a lot of fun. Kind of a New England tradition for the crazies. Hope everyone has a great year!
Heavens! They have one here in Seattle each year and I suspect it's warmer than Boston. I haven't got the nerve to try it. Well done!! Just found the article online. It says the water was 46 degrees. So somewhat better than 40.5! You're brave. Edited by A Little Madness 2013-01-01 5:27 PM |

Veteran 157 Rainy WA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Hi all, I went for a walk today, so I'm getting in the groove. It's been a very couch potato holiday. I loved it! Time to focus. My first race is an indoor one on March 24 so I have 12 weeks to get ready. Glad I'm a member of the group. Accountability is nice. Happy New Years! |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED OK people it is time for the Inaugural Portly Triathlete Weight Loss Challenge: Is that wetsuit getting a little tough to squeeze into? Are you asking: Do you think this swimsuit makes my butt look big? Do you sometimes feel like 10 pounds of something in a 5 pound bag? Well it is time for the Mama Knows Best Weight Loss Challenge! I ran this by our fearless leader and Mama thought this was a great idea. The person with the largest percentage of weight loss by 8:00 PM EST April Fools Day will be declared the winner and will be awarded a NEW CAR! Just kidding, how about a coffee mug from the Black Dog on Marthas Vineyard (very cool and would be a great conversation piece) that I will donate. At first I was thinking a tshirt but that is probably the last thing we need with all the ones we pick up at races – forgive me as I digress. This is how it works simply reply “I’m in” to the thread. Starting This Sunday night the 6th you can either post your starting weight or if you are a little sensitive to that just send it to me via PM and I will only show percentage lost. Weigh -ins are weekly every Sunday night by 8:00 PM EST, if you miss one, no big deal but try not to miss two in a row. I will try to post rankings every Monday night. Like I said this a percentage loss contest if someone’s starting weight is 250 pounds and losses 25 pounds that would be 10%, If another person’s starting weight is 200 and they lose 25 pounds they would win because that would be 12.5 % Hope that explains it fairly well but don’t be afraid to ask any questions. Let the quest for the coveted Black Dog Mug begin! Who’s in? Edited by JREDFLY 2013-01-01 6:41 PM (black dog.jpg) Attachments ---------------- black dog.jpg (3KB - 13 downloads) |

Veteran 157 Rainy WA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I'm in! That is one classy mug. No way am I passing up a chance to win it! I checked, that's 86 days (Jan. 6 to Apr. 1), a bit over 12 weeks. So 2 lbs. a week, I'm hoping for 24 lbs. I'll take less, but I'd love more! I'm about 40 lbs. over where I would like. That would make a big dent. Thanks James for coming up with this, and thanks Mama for approving it! |

Member 54 Kenosha | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED James, I'm in. I've got a goal to try and drop some weight by that time in prep for my half marathon and the coming race season to follow that. Now I hope work doesn't interfere with my goals or training plan. My coffee would probably taste pretty darn good from that special mug. |

New user 3 Tampa | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED LSUrunningmom - 2012-12-30 5:27 PM4 Yesterday I did day 1 and I had a HORRIBLE run up to the point where I wanted to give up and just start over. Sometimes the biggest obstacle we have is our own selves. I am so glad to hear that you kept at it. Is it tough in the beginning - oh yeah you bet it is, but the rewards you take away from it you just can't buy. I am 42, but I still feel like I am 20 at times. I used to be able to run forever, and hardly break a sweat. These days I am huffing and puffing before my first mile. To say it is frustrating is a huge understatement. I know I will probably never get back to what I used to be able to do, but I also refuse to just sit by and give up. You have a group of people out here that want to see you succeed. Let us know where you are having your up times and the down. We want to be able to share in both your triumphs and your pains. Keep at it! You are already a winner, as many people never even try. |

Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I got in a swim today. I had planned to bike tonight but when I got back with my son from his swim practice my father-in-law was visiting. Do you usually try to make up missed workouts or do you just move on to the next workout? I usually just move on to the next workout. |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I rented mine for my first open water and I am renting another one for my next one in March. I rented mine because there are so many styles you can pick from and many different brands. I wanted to try a few before I bought one. The company that I rent from is pretty cool. I go to www.wetsuitrental.com. They ship fast and if you decide you love the suit you rented you can buy it. The money that you spent renting it goes to the purchase so you only have to pay the difference. I'm pretty sure you also get a warranty with it. I am going to buy a used one from them in mid-summer for my 70.3 Ironman in the fall. |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED After a workout I like to eat and handful of almonds. I eat the flavored Emeralds almonds. I like the coco kind and the coco and peanut butter ones. I also get chocolate milk after an 1.5 hour workout. I like the Horizon low fat chocolate milk in the small boxes. Both are good and give you much needed nutrients. Plus if you are a chocolate lover like me they help with cravings |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Good job walking! It was raining and cold here all day and I wanted to lay on the couch and eat junk food. I did drag my plump butt of the couch eventually How does an indoor triathlon work? Do you cycle on a spin or stationary bike, do you run on a treadmill or a track? We don't have any indoor tri's here. My first triathlon is March 9th (it may be moved to a date in April) and it is outside. I live in Louisiana so it warms up pretty fast in the spring. |

You bring your own bike and put it in their trainers, which are ranged around the pool area, where the swim is. We run outside around a small lake, about 2.8 miles. Your tri is coming up soon too. Train, train, train...couch, couch, couch. They both call to me. |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Thanks for the pep talk. I had another rough run today but I think my shoes were more to blame more than anything. I am going to swap shoes and see hope I feel tomorrow. I'm not giving up. I'm going to complete it and keep moving. It's all about baby steps, I'll get there one day! |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Oh ok! That's pretty cool! How long is your tri? What kind of plan are you following? I think I should have done an indoor tri for my first one. I have a 750 open water swim in a small, calm, clean pond, 14.4 mile bike (that may change to 11.4 miles), and a 5k run. Everything is flat and paved so it's not too bad. I did this last year all by myself for my first triathlon ever. I didn't get to enjoy it too much since I had high anxiety and no one was there to support me. However I have family coming to this race so I think it will be a lot better! |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Question/Opinions: I am a beginner swimmer. I always thought I could swim but what I was actually doing was not swimming, it was holding my breath and moving my arms, I could never do multiple laps. I started in a masters class that took beginners in November and we had a two week break because the pool is at UMass Boston and they were on break. Any way I feel better than when I started but feel I am not making the progress that I should be for the time I have been putting in 1 hour ( with breaks for instruction) on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays at 6:00 AM (I am up at 5:00 AM to make it there on time). I am breathing every third stroke from both sides, head is in the water blowing bubbles (Most of the time- I think!). Teacher seems very good and is a great guy but has me doing drills (kickboard, fins, pull bouy) with the group and I think I keep messing up (head out of water, not breathing, etc,) because I am trying to keep up. The coach says not to but it is hard when you have someone next to you and you hear him yelling at the others (not me). Today I was all excited because I just took my time and did one lap without stopping for the first time at the beginning of class. I have been doing one hour, three time per week for two months and I just thought I would be further along by now. I love the group and I think it is good to have someone watching me and pushing me out of my comfort zone for this may be good in the long run but I am just wondering if I would have better progress if I was just taking it slower working on my own with some occasional private instruction. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Edited by JREDFLY 2013-01-02 9:19 PM |

New user 124 Baton Rouge, LA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Another bad run today Again, I'm not giving up. I am moving onto C25K Week 5, Day 1 tomorrow. Tomorrow I am starting off with a 5 minute walk, 5 minute run,3 minute walk, 5 minute run, 3 minute walk, 5 minute run, then a 5 minute cool down walk for a total of 31 minutes. Again, I am going to run on the treadmill because of my husband's work schedule. I have a I think one of the reasons that I didn't do well on my run was because of my shoes. The outer part of my right foot near my arch was aching but one of my toes on my left foot began getting a blister from my shoe. Hoping tomorrow will be better, either way, I won't give up. I run in Newtons and I have ever had a problem before this new pair that I got for my birthday. This new pair is more rigid and less cushion in the sole. I like my other ones but I think I am going to try a new brand for my half marathon on the 20th. |
