My membership had expired and I was torn about renewing it. I've been a paying member for several years and have enjoyed much of what BT has to offer; training plans, articles, online coaching, and a sometimes great online community of fellow triathletes. Lately though, I've seen a shift in the attitude and demeanor of the forums, particularly in COJ. Seems to be more snarkiness, divisiveness, and negativity than I can ever recall. It really gave me pause, but in the end the features available to paid members outweigh the negative vibe. For now.
I'm sure most don't give a red rats patootie but I figured I'd just put it out there. Ok, I'm off to start a flip turn thread. At least the TT arguments are more edifying that the COJ arguments.
I used to post in COJ several years ago. It always felt a little cliquey to me so I stopped posting. I continued to post in other forums here because I like the exchange of info on the sport, nutrition, injuries, local stuff for my state, etc.
I still lurk on COJ because I find the topics and people's opinions on those topics to be pretty interesting. I like hearing what people think but yes, I do hold back on tossing my in my opinion for the most part for fear of getting a tongue lashing.
It seems silly, to be afraid of or to even care what people think of you on an internet forum, most of whom you'll never meet. But I guess I do.
When I was really new to this site I started a post about metro-sexuality and acted in an opinionated manner. I was called a troll and didn't really know what that meant. I guess people thought either that it was a stupid topic or that I was being overly mean or both. I didn't single anyone out, I just made generalizations. Still, a few people didn't like it and I got called names and it hurt. Not enough to ruin my day, just enough to make me not want to post here.
I found this post odd because there have been several occasions where I felt sort of "bullied" by the OP or that his comments were unnecessarily negative, most recently in TT.
I don't say that to be mean, Mrrbrad or to point fingers since I'm sure I've made comments that have rubbed people the wrong way whether I realized it or not.
My point is that at times we can probably all come off as jerky, or negative or divisive even when we don't mean to be or realize that we are.
