Surgery tomorrow with at least two pins for the next 4-6 weeks. Don't know whether there will be permanent loss of use in top joint of dominant thumb. Really sucks! Joe, really sorry to hear that and let us know how the surgery goes. The lawsuit might not look so bad now! |

Make sure your bike is on the small front chain-ring, there is a short steep hill at the beginning of the bike. The bike course is pretty flat, the only hill is at mile 42 @ Chalk Hill. I have gone up on 39x23 gear (for both 70.3 & 140.6), but for this year, I will have 39x25. The run has some hills, save some energy for them. You will do just fine. Have fun at Vineman 70.3. I'm a very good athlete and I enjoy doing/playing any sport. I'm a tennis player but I don't don't do it in a competitive way anymore; I just do it as a hobby now. I started running and told myself that if I like running and loved swimming I should try triathlon as well. CURRENT TRAINING: 2 half-marathon and just 2 weeks to go for the 3rd one. Several sprints triathlons (my best time is 1h15m). My main goals for 2013 are to improve my sprint distance time and do Olympic Distance (regular) triathlons and maybe a Half-Ironman. THIS YEAR'S RACES: Max Tott Half Marathon, Guatemala City (January 27), Coban Half-Marathon (May 26) Guatemala City 1/2 Marathon (August), Ironmaya 70.3 tri relay??? (Sept), 2012 RACES: Sprint Triathlons(Sep-Dec), Guatemala City Half Marathon (August), other races WEIGHTLOSS: I'm 5'11, and currently 150 lbs. WHY I'M A GOOD MENTEE: I'm in love with sports. Lot of experience in the competition mentality. I'm a quick learner and passionate about Triathlon. I need motivation and advice from fellow triathletes. Thanks, Daniel Welcome Daniel and Ramon, two friends who are relatively new to triathlon and who are now in the group. Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Nice 4 miles this morning with 8x30" fartlek intervals. I'm really beginning to enjoy this run. The Fartleks really break up the monotony of easy/moderate pace. It was just warm enough to run in shorts and short sleeve. Finally warming up here. Swim at lunch then coaching daughters soccer game this evening. Our first half of the soccer season was pretty good - 3-1-1. Last three games we've scored 16 goals and allowed 2. The girls are 10 and 11 year olds and last game they did a super job passing and moving the ball up the field. Really proud of them! |

When there is a wetsuit swim, kicking loses steam because of the high buoyancy but non-wetsuit swims open a huge gap between swimmers and non-swimmers mostly because of the kick and not upper body buoyancy like most believe.Swim question - my kicking swim sets suck! yes I know there is a debate whether triathletes need to kick or not, but I would like to improve this part of my training - bascially the kids in the pool cross 50 yds by the time i reach 25, then I am exhausted! My avg 100yd swim is 1:30; 1:24 fastest. Any useful ideas, videos or comments on proper technique? thansk, Mark. Kick with fins for strength (with a board), kick on the sides (same thing, strength) and sprinkle 100 yard kick sets between swim sets. The only way to get good at kicking is... kicking. Thanks for the advice, E! I was hoping it wasnt going to be what you offered but its time to HTFU and go kick! I too love Brett sutton and enjoy his tweets - never a dull moment with that guy. |

New user 2 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Would love to join - please tlet me know what to do next. Here is my story:
NAME: username: debaston/ first name: Deb STORY: I have been an athlete my entire life, grew up on Miami Beach and have been swimming competitively for many years. I am 47 now. I have completed a couple of triathlons in the past - nothing major. I have always wanted to do an Ironman. While training for the Lawrence, Kansas half in 2010, I went skiing and shattered my right knee. After reconstructive surgery and donor tissue being implated I was told I wouldn't be able to compete again, much less regain range of motion. I am stubborn and I have more range of motion now than I did prior to the accident. I began training again with no race planned and then in November of 2012 I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's Disease and instead of succumbing to it, I decided to push harder than ever. In all honesty, I look and feel better now than ever before. I need guidance to get through this on many levels. FAMILY STATUS: I am divorced and have 3 amazing "kids" who are 26, 24 and 20. They are all extremely successful and 2 live in Utah, 1 is a chemical engineer. My daughter just got married in March and my son will be getting married late next year. My kids were there when I crossed my finish lines and they are my biggest fans. I have 3 dogs and 1 is my ofttimes running companion. I live in St. Louis, Missouri. CURRENT TRAINING: I have been following my own training schedule and logging on Training Peaks. After the knee injury, I seem to have a mental block about running. Swimming is my strongest leg and I participate in an open water practice on Saturday mornings in a wetsuit. I have a great tri bike and am in the half-distance training stage. My goal is to finish, of course, but I need to cut time from my run and remove the mental block and get into a good groove for the bike leg. Lots of strength training (helps with the PD). THIS YEAR'S RACES: Innsbrook sprint triathlon, Lake St. Louis Olympic triathlong, Big Shoulders 5k swim Chicago, Half-Ironman Miami October, 2013. I am participating for Team Fox and raising PD awareness at the same time.
FUTURE RACES: Ironman full distance. WEIGHTLOSS: I am fortunate that I am in great condition weight-wise. I am 5'8", 138 pounds. WHY I'M A GOOD MENTEE: I listen and absorb advice without question. I am 100% dedicated to training for my races and continuing on, even with adverse situations trying to get in my way. I need someone and a group to guide me and get me over the humps of training so that I can do well in my race. I would like to double my run mileage like I have seen people say and add speed to my bike ride. I love multi-sport and hope to be doing it for the long haul. |

That's a cool spreadsheet. Do I just add my name to that and have at it? - Joel Feel free to add your name to the spreadsheet. I can copy over the formulas, etc. The qualification for a workout to be added is that it must be swim, bike or run and the total time for the individual discipline must be 30 minutes or more. You can only count each discipline once per day. For example: On Monday I swim for 30 minutes in the morning, run for 30 minutes in the morning and bike for 45 minutes in the morning. I would count a swim, bike and run for that day. On Tuesday I run 25 minutes in the morning and that is it. I do not count that as a workout but can add it to my total time for the month. On Wednesday I swim for 30 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening. I can count only one swimming workout for that day but would increase my total time for the month by 1 hr and 15 min. A rest is considered a day in which you do not workout via swim, bike or run. If there are any questions please contact me. Also, if you want to you can go back through your workouts for the year and add in January through April totals. I find the Calendar view on the BT website to be very good at this as you can quickly see which disciplines on which days and time for each workout. |

Well top part of the river was warm, but could tell where the thermal layer was. 30 min of drills and getting use to the wetsuit. Got to remember that I can not try and go all out and keep up with my club members. |

Member 146 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Name: Username-rgarcia1501 First Name - Robert Story/Family Status: Father of five and I am 47. Ages 11 (boy), 9(boy), 5(boy) and twin 4 year old girls. I work full time and my wife besides being a fantastic mother is a small business owner. I'm not sure that she fully understands the time commitment this will take but she is trying to be understanding. It seems like a lifetime ago mid-20's) I did duathlons (swimming was never my thing) when I lived in California. Its hard not to be outside and somewhat healthy when living out there. Once I moved back to Illinois working out just wasn't in the cards. A couple of years ago I decided to enter the Chicago marathon when my company offered us a free entry and training program. I didn't train very well and ended up pulling my hamstring 2 weeks before. i ran it anyway, I should say a hobbled through it and finished in 5:40. During the run I told myself never again but once I finished I knew I didn't want to end that way. So after taking a long time off to heal I entered another marathon for 2012. I took it much more serious and really put in the training/miles and even had thoughts of running a Boston qualifying time (3:25) but three weeks before I got some kind of hip injury that was very painful. I decided to run anyway and about two miles in pulled a calf muscle. Again I managed to finish and took nearly an hour off my previous time. Now healthy again I am doing a marathon this Sunday and after that I begin serious tri training. Races: In 2011 I did a half marathon and a full marathon. For 2012 all I did was a full marathon but I greatly increased my mileage from the year before. Races for 2013: I am doing a marathon in Schaumburg IL on May 19th. Possibly a hometown 5K on June 2nd, the ET Batavia sprint triathlon on June 9th, Racine HIM on July 21st, a 20 miler on September 20th and the Chicago marathon on October 13th. Current training: I have been primarily training for the marathon with some cross training to help get ready for the sprint tri. After this weekend I will really start training. I did start swimming lessons to work on my technique and I just purchased a real (used) bike. A beautiful yellow Cervelo Dual that I can't wait to get cranking on. If I could figure out how to post pictures I'd put one up. Weight loss: I'm not too concerned about weight loss. Once I started putting the running miles in last year the weight came off. I have put those pounds back on since I haven't been running because the appetite didn't go anywhere. I think once I start adding miles on the treadmill and bike I'll be down to a fighting weight of around 180-183 on a 5'11" frame. Why I would be a good mentee?: As my wife would say once I put my mind to something its hard to get me to not complete it. So my goal is a half ironman this year and a full in Madison in 2014 with the right mentor I'm sure I can achieve those goals. |
