Glad to hear you've been feeling better, Jayne. I definitely agree that you should insist your doctor check you for auto-immune disorders. I have Epstein-Barr Syndrome (a.k.a. chronic fatigue) and reading your symptom list sounds ALL too familiar, especially the sore throat, fatigue, and swollen glands part. Thankfully, I've not been very symptomatic over the past couple of years.

Hang in there!!

Add me to the list of people who wish you a happy 2008 training season, Jayne.  I had to take off the better part of 2007 to rehab a shoulder and a hip.  It sucked.  I'm back in the saddle again, working at it every day, step by single step.  We're all in your corner rooting for your recovery and some really great training for 2008!

Hey all,

Happy New Year's Eve to everybody. Hope you have the kind of celebration that you wanted, whether it's dancing till you drop, watching Dick Clark and going to bed at 12:01, or doing a First Night Fun Run (this probably happens more in the temperate climates...). We're planning to have dinner and play some board games with friends, but the friends have had nasty colds so we're not sure if they'll still be up for it.

Melissa - I have been checked for Epstein Barr (negative) and for Anti-Nuclear Antibodies (also negative) which I guess is a test for some other auto-immune diseases. If things don't start improving in the new year I will take it up again with my doctor.

Kate - congrats on getting through your rehab. A shoulder *and* a hip sounds like a lot of freakin' work. It takes a ton of patience to deal with all that.

New Year's Resolutions:
1. Find a way to get healthy
2. Write at least 60% of my third book
3. Get caught up on my Slow Fat Triathlete reader emails!

May 2008 be the best year of your life (so far)!
Jayne

Sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well.  I second the 2nd opinion part; some doctors are really good in some areas, not so good in others.  I could give you a long list of questions which might narrow down the possible diagnoses, but an easier route would be to see a rheumatologist (specializes in auto-immune, inflammatory diseases, etc.).

Hope you're feeling well soon.  (3 months is plenty long to wait "to see if things improve", if your doctor's still dragging her feet...)

BTW, an anti-nuclear antibody is generally a test for lupus...A good thought, but it doesn't begin to cover the possibilities.

Yeah, I probably should get another opinion. I've seen 3 doctors within Kaiser, but no rheumatologist...Now I'm just waiting for my cough to clear up so I can tell what my baseline level of symptoms is again.

Cheers

Wow. I'm so stoked to see Jayne here on BT, but then again ... I hate it when anyone is not feeling their best. I found "Slow Fat Triathlete" so inspiring that I've purchased a number of copies and handed them out to friends. Having gone through three giant life changes in the last few months (marriage, career change and move from NC (my triathlon training heaven) to Chicagoland (desolate cold training purgatory), I need to re-read for inspiration.

Who would think that even in the gym, everyone dresses differently here. I showed up the first day ... all "here I am in my lycra" only to discover that I was the only one. The ONLY one. How can that possibly be? Suddenly, I reverted back to my former pre-SFT self and was ashamed. It felt like everyone was looking at me as if I were an alien. Oh yeah ... I'm a southerner in IL ... I AM an alien.

But I'm not giving up. I dug through my box of triathlon treasures and have started wearing my not-so-complimentary complimentary tri tech shirts when I'm training in the gym. I just pull them down over the belly roll and keep getting it ... my way of saying ... "Yeah. I did it ... and I'm gonna do it again ... just watch me."

So ... I hope Jayne and everyone here in Athena/Clydesdale land has a FABULOUSLY healthy and personally successful 2008 season ...

Slow? Yep.
Fat? Yep. Yep.
Triathlete? Yep. Yep. Yep.

You bet your booty ... and I'm proud of it!

Hey 1 Foot, nice to hear from you. I like to hear about anyone that buys multiple copies of the book... ;-)

So I don't get this - they don't wear lycra in gyms in Chicago? That's kind of odd. What do they wear? And good for you for pulling out the tri tops regardless.

Cheers
Jayne

The book is my "bible", Jayne. From when I started running with a women's group in Raleigh 1.5 years ago where my original whine was "I'm spilling my margarita." until today! Man, do I miss those ladies. I hope when spring happens I'll be able to find a comparable running group. It's just not the same whining alone.

They certainly don't wear lycra like I wear lycra! I train mostly in some variety of constraining compression short/capri. For winter running, I had purchased a couple of pairs of winter cycling pants without chamois pads. I've seen a couple of guys in compression pants, but the majority of people wear what we (the folks from back home) would have deemed track suits. I did take note that many of the guys wear actual running shorts, which of course I don't due to fat-thigh-ride-up-bunching-in-the-crotch issues.

I guess I'm spoiled now, if you can call it that. I don't like chafing, and I seem to suffer some kind of chafing issue every time I attempt to give in and wear something like sweat pants or ... heaven forbid ... a tshirt for working out.

My biggest challenge will be that I have moved from an area where wetsuits are almost never required to where they're necessary. THAT is something I dread putting on my "to do" list.

I hope you're feeling better and stronger with each passing day.

Looking forward to it!

Hey all,

hope chilly January is treating you all well. I was in Boston last weekend to give a book talk and I got to go for a walk in the fresh snow on Sunday. Kind of a treat for a Californian - I haven't seen snow falling for about 10 years, maybe more.

Jetlag - hope the book provides some kind of motivation for you. And a triathlon in London? Where do you swim?

1 Foot - I hear you on the lycra vs. sweats. Ya just gotta be comfy and not worry too much about fitting in with the pack.

Cheers

Hey Jayne!  I handed your book over to my dad.  He has been wanting to do a tri for a very long time and just hasn't done it because he is a little freaked out about the water.  But he loves your book.  He hasn't read a book all the way through in about 5 years and he got through SFT in just over a week.  Thanks for writing it...you are really making a difference in a lot of people's lives!

If anyone lives in the Philly area, I have just startd a beginner triathlon/duathlon group to prepare for the Philly Women's Tri/Du. We had our first meeting last Sunday and almost 40 women attended. It was great. We have all sorts of pros lined up to help and teach and we are even goin to do a min-tri/duathlon before the race. PM me if you are interested so I can you or whomever, to my listserve. We'll have a blast. There is even a "bosom buddy" wave!

To train, in a pool, but for the London Tri, in the Thames (The Royal Victoria Dock). I wonder whether men in biohazard suits shower us down in T1...

Hey Rhonda, good to "see" you here! Congrats on starting up your club; that's awesome.

Jetlag - I'm sure the water in the Thames is much improved from what it was 30 years ago. There's no actual shipping that far upstream, is there? Just try not to swallow too much....

I did the Chicago Triathlon in 2004 and swam in Lake Michigan. This of course prompted every native Chicagoan I knew to tell me horror stories of the things found floating off the beaches in the lake. But you just have to put it all out of your mind as best you can.

Cheers

Jayne, I wouldn't bet on it being much improved LOL

The race takes place in the Royal Victoria Dock so it's all blocked off from the moving stuff (I hope!)

Hi Tri-me2, thanks for the good words! Glad you're enjoying the book.

Jetlag - well that *sounds* posh anyway even if the water's slimy and fetid. "Royal Victoria Dock"! Wow.

2nd book update - The revised manuscript is now with my editor. She will no doubt have some more comments and changes, but things are well on track for the fall publication date. Also, I found out I'm getting a double spread in the fall catalog. This would seem to indicate that Da Capo Lifelong thinks of this as one of their more marketable books. The new new title (this thing has been through about 6 working titles, if you're keeping score at home) is "Shape Up With the Slow Fat Triathlete: A Fitness Guide for the Rest of Us." I hope that the cover art will underscore the point that the title is intended to be somewhat tongue in cheek...

Did I write about this already? I'm getting a weird feeling of deja vu.

Best to all
Jayne

Hi all,
Well, I'm just very frustrated and discouraged so thought I'd come here for I don't know what.
I just came from the endocrinologist as I haven't been able to lose any weight. Any I mean none, zippo, zilch. I am training for a half Ironman and Ironman Florida to the tune of about 13-15 hours per week, around 1500-1700 calories per day. Tried 2000, but nothing there either.
The doctor said, "Rhonda, we don't know why it is, but unfortunately, you are one of those rare people who can't lose weight." I am upset because my knees and feet are killing me from walking/running, I struggle up hills on the bike, and I slug through the water. Call it a pity palace, but it's just not fair!!
That is all.

Have you tried calorie shifting?

The theory behind it is that your body has no idea what you will eat in the future, it only know what you've eaten in the last few days, so, in a week, you have 2-3 days where you eat above your normal calorie amount, and the rest are below the normal amount. You still get the same amount of calories, but it is supposed to trick your body into boosting your metabolism.

Basically, your body has adjusted to your caloric intake and training regime. Maybe shaking it up a bit will help?
