I wouldn't do the HIM first because I wouldn't want to give up the fun I had during my two sprints, they are easier to train for and when your participating in them you can really enjoy the moment and smile all the way through, it was a wonderful experience. I would think I would have felt in over my head if I would have done a HIM first. Remember time is on your side to do as many sprint, olympic,1/2 or full Ironmans. I'm 46 and just started last year.
Enjoy the ride and the thrill of getting there.

Swim question:

When you breathe, where is your opposite arm located?

ie: Say you breathe on your left.

As your head turns towards the left, where is your right arm? (Extended out, beginning the pull, in the power part of the pull, etc.)

Thanks!

So tomorrow I think I am going to hit the pool...based on my able to swim almost continuously for 30 minutes with small breaks every 500 yards (so total distance was about 1500) does anyone have any good workout plans for a partially intense workout put not something that will overly stress me?

Barqhead (Pam) gave me a good suggestion recently....

I'd been doing the same as you: 3x500, for a total of 1500 yds. My times were not improving, so I whined about it. LOL

Pam suggested doing some speed drills. It was a great suggestion.

So I've been doing things like "50s on a minute." (You swim 50 yds hard. Rest until the minute is up, and then go again. Repeat several times.)

You could do variations on this too. For example, swim 100 yds at a good pace. Take a short break and do it again.

I think, (I say think because I am sitting on the couch trying to recreate my swim action) my left arm is just beginning the pull as I breathe, then when I am done with my breath, my arm is mid stroke.

My almost 4yo thinks I am nuts.

So what you're doing seems pretty close to what I'm doing. Hm....

(I don't have a 4 yo. But my dog would probably say the same. )

I like the speed idea...I think I will do some speed and some distance tomorrow in the water.  I had to lay on my bed and "practice" swimming to come up with where my arms are.  When I breathe to my right side, my right arm is almost completely behind me while my left is straight in front.  I have tried bilateral breathing but I don't seem to get as much air because I don't do it exactly the same way.  I have to remember to roll back and forth when I breathe otherwise I lose a lot of energy.  I think you asked just so we would all look weird and trying swimming on dry land

Amy, I completely agree...take your time and enjoy it!  No need to rush.  Sounds like you have a good running base too.  My longest run before my half mary was only 10 and well that is where I hit the wall during the race.  I almost think for the purpose of half mary training running the whole distance is a smart idea...unlike with full mary where capping at 20 really is the best idea.  I have to work back up in my running.  I hate running outside and it was 4 degrees today at 11 am when I had to go out...who would want to run in that!

Well, at least you did it at home, and not in the middle of the supermarket!

Thanks for the analysis!

It is Saturday night and I am bored so I decided to spend my night watching IM Kentucky on DVD that my mom made me.  Does anyone else get inspired to just go out and sign up for an Ironman after watching these programs?  I know this year that I want to volunteer at IM WI because it is right in my neck of the woods. The sign up for the lottery spots of Kona are up and that drives me nuts...cuz I want to register   I have also heard of people buying the M-Dot stickers and using them for inspiration to remember to train really hard.  Okay...I think I'll go back to dreaming   Everyone have a good night!

I'm back...got my inspiration for a while.

Goals for 2008: this year was a little bit of a disappointment for me.  I had two DNS and just lost my love and motivation for the sport.  I did finish my first half marathon but I also realized that the reason why I love this sport so much is the diversity and with the training I did for the half...I lost that diversity.  So as for my goals...

1. To live each day like Jon Blais did and Dick and Rick Hoyt of Team Hoyt do: remembering that life is not a practice run but the real thing

2. To NEVER lose my reason for why I do this sport; the feelings of joy crossing a finish line, the friends I make along the way, the energy I get after a great workout.

3. To start and finish every race I sign up for (unless injury prevents me otherwise) and with a smile on my face

4. To never lose faith in me or what I am doing!

I am not setting any race goals...not yet.  I love to dream big; there could be a half ironman in my training plan this summer.  But I need to make sure that the feelings I have right now are here to stay and that I have what it takes to train myself to the start line and push to the finish.

I LOVE this group...I love having a group of people who understand that it really isn't crazy,  but instead something that makes me happy to go swim for an hour or bike a bunch of miles.  I get some support from friends and family, but no one really knows.  Thank you

Click and paste to google. Be prepared to never think the same! We are the people that say "I CAN"! We have a burning in desire to test our bodies, minds and souls. We are approximately 2% of the total population. Do you feel different?

My prayer is that each one of us will test ourselves to the limit this year and come out with a sense of pride and a view that the world is a place with no limits...

Another must see.

Yes I'm up early today, we are iced in here.

I share the same feelings as Pam, and I'm so glad to be a part of the group with "like minded"
people. If you are new to this just make goals, perserve in training, complete goals and you will feel the difference in you mindset...

Another.

I'm planning out my workouts this week as I'm being motivated. As soon as the sun comes out today I'm trying for a long run, and I will join in the fun of crunches and push-ups, + some core later today.

Thanks for the IM info about the one on today!  I am going to record it.  I think I will probably be in the pool when it is on.

Amy,

The links are amazing.  I have seen a few before.  They have a Team Blazeman for Jon and I am thinking about racing this year in honor of Jon.  I was so changed the first time I saw Kona with him, remember crying as I was sitting watching it as he rolled cross the finish line.  Then the next year when he had to watch as someone raced in his place.  I completely think like you which is why I am so glad we are here!  It was the inaugural IM Kentucky, I think this past year that I was watching.  Such an amazing race with someone who had never won, going down in history.  And doesn't I Can Only Imagine send chills up your spine.  In the thick of life I forget about these people and this year...it is my goal not to.  Because man, if they can do it, through thick and thin, well I can be right along side of them cheering them on!

Pam,

You saw the trailer for Jon the Blazeman for a reason, thus it changed your life, thus you will inspire and change someones life. Nothing is by chance.

The Ironman you watched is the IM I plan on doing in the next 3 years. It is only 2 hours from my home. It is the Louisville Ironman, I am going to go there to watch it next year to get my bearings.

Have a great Sunday!

Yea, I have learned in my life that nothing is by chance...I am a firm believer in fate.  As for IM Louisville, that is exciting that it is so close.  IM Wisconsin is only 4 hours from my home and I actually plan on volunteering for it.  I think I will do something in the morning or registration a few days before and then be able to live the life and live Ironman at the end.  I want to stay till midnight...people say that last hour is amazing.

I just want you ladies--Pam & Amy--to know that if Ironman causes me to get divorced, it's both of your faults!     Every time, I start to rule out doing a full Iron race, I see some of these videos.  I hadn't see the Blazeman piece or that particular one on the Hoyt's.  We were just talking about at our Tri Club party last night about different races.  One of the guys at the party just did his first Full Iron--Grand Floridian.  Our club is predominantly made up of and focused on beginners.  He's the first of our group to do an Iron distance race.  About 8 of us are planning on HIM's this year though.  We've been talking about going and doing the Inaugural 70.3 in New Orleans in April 09.

Ooooops there That is the nature of the beast inside us, majority of people wouldn't give it a second thought, but we are wired differently. All I got to tell ya Eric is keep the Lady happy, you just have to multi task it...ha I have faith in you.

Well my run is done for the day and thank goodness, it is 29 degrees out but feels like 19 with the 16mph winds.

Now it is time for r&r and my hubby! See Eric Multi Tasking...

Happy Sunday everybody!!!! Sorry I've been out of the loop these past few days. Just stopping in real quick after the trainer ride. Looks like everyone is kicking some butt!!!
To add my two cents, I saw the Hoyts last year at Timberman 1/2IM, it was a truely inspirational sight. The bond that they have is amazing!!!
Hope everyone has great workouts today!!!!
