I agree with the straight swims being awesome for recovery! In fact when I was running (before i got injured) I would try and swim the night after a morning run, or the next day as it really seemed to help!

One tip I was given was at least once a week do a LONG warm up that is the same length (or a little more)  as your 'A' race for the season... it is NOT your entire workout but is a HUGE confidence boost, especially if you consider swimming your weaker sport

Hi team - hope everyone has a great weekend! Im doing christmas preparation this weekend so I will be in and out of BT, but just leave a post if I can help with anything..

I have some more swim related info relating to its value in a training program that I will try to write up either over the weekend or on MOnday... I hope this is useful!

Thanks Pam and Cat!!! I tried the head tap drill during my workout today and my mid workout shoulder ache disappeared!!!. Laughing Also focused on reaching but not overreaching which also helped.

THANKS AGAIN!

Ditto that for the head tap, I gave it a shot too and it did help concentrate on the high elbows.  I'm going to get in what I can this next week, then with holidays and all (and the general leave I'm on right now) I won't get into a set schedule till JAN and it'll be a lot to do in about a 3 month time frame, but that's the fun of it, right??

Its a huge achievement to even stay active when life is so busy, I know I am struggling myself right now.

My only goal is to get to the pool and try to remember to do my PT work! Although I have decided that christmas shopping should be considered a sport!

Hello everyone. I'm in survival mode right now. Workouts are taking a back seat to family and holiday obligations. But that's okay. It is a nice break and helps me appreciate my "me" (workout) time more when I do get it. I have two swims planned for the week and hopefully a bike ride next Sunday. I have 3 holiday parties, sports massage, hair appointment and cookie baking all on tap for the week. Hope everyone had a great weekend! I know I did, but I ate way too much. Oh well. 'Tis the season.

I made some slight changes to Dee's blue link box. I compacted it some (so I could still see my most recent log entry without scrolling) and added a link to the first page in this thread so that I wouldn't have to hunt through all the mentor threads for this one. Thought I'd post it for the HTML impaired who might find it useful:

thanks for everyone's comments/tips about the swimming.  i'm excited to try the head tap this week! and to try to make some structure out of my swim workouts.

can i get my name added to the pretty pink sparkly box? as you could probably guess my name's Holly.  thanks!!

I hope you are feeling better!  My first tri of 2008 is on March 29th, so today I imported my 12 week training plan.  It doesn't officially start until Jan 6th, so between now and then I hope to get back to easy swim, bike and run.  I haven't done any sort of exercise since the first week of November, so I am sure I have lost all conditioning.  Oh well.  This is the consistency thing I was talking about when introducing myself.

I still have more holiday shopping to do, but it is mostly done.  I have to go to the post office today and mail packages.  I am not looking forward to it.    I hope everyone had a great weekend.

As a gift for myself for my birthday (my birthday is Christmas eve) I am thinking of upgrading my Heart Rate Monitor.  Any recommendations?

Santa (aka myself) is already having a new compact crank put on my ride. More hills here I come! Anyone else treating themselves this holiday season?

HR - I've great and wonderful things about Garmins.

My hubby has given me the gift of coaching. Paid for a year in advance. Yay!! I am in charge of stocking stuffers and will be filling his and mine with all kinds of energy gels and stuff like that.

happy almost birthday!! do you ever feel cheated having a birthday so close to christmas? my birthday (and my sister's who is exactly 2 years younger than me) is on january 4th and we always felt a little bit that way.

i'm so glad you brought up heart rate monitors. i've never used one but asked for one for christmas and was told to pick one out. i'd appreciate recommendations for less expensive, easy to operate, semi-reliable/durable hrms if that exists!!  i have no idea what i'm looking for.

Im sorry youve been sick - just remember that getting better is more important than training (and better for your training in the long run)

If you need to revise the swim challnege goal down due to illness there is a provision for this, just let your team leader know

i did the post offive thing yesterday... best of luck!!!

As for the consistency, my advice with it being hte holiday season is to try and do something 0 this might be playing with children, it might be going for a walk, it might be some crunches at home...

Whatever you can fit in is good until you get through the busy season... then I will be watching your consistency (dont worry im struggling with this right now too - so much to do and not enough hours in the day!)

I LOVE your hubby!!

On the HR monitors - I have a Polar one (I got it at cost through a mate of mine) and it is great, Garmin is also awesome.

I would just say work out what features you want first as there are a lot of options... then just select one from a well known brand and you will be fine.

Holly

All of the major brands such as Polar and Garmin do an entry level HRM which are pretty good quality as long as you look after them (clean the strap, keep safe when not using it)

So.. probably the only thing to think about is the colour!

Yeah I feel cheated.  Now mostly because after Christmas i have another 363 days to wait.  we've got the family programed against the one present for both occasions.

I had a Polar F5 but realize I want one that is easier to program zones and has a lap timer function ect.  I'll keep looking and let you know what I come up with.
