merrymound - 2008-01-13 12:57 PM Thanks kleinrider! I used your slogan "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" to get me through a motivational issue while running. It was the perfect thing to keep me going.

You are very welcome.  I forgot where i picked that up, but i think it's very true..

HELP!!!

So this past weel for me has been horrible.  Work has been extremely busy, and to top it off I was "injured" for most of the week.  I am not having a hard time motivating to get out there again and start running because my mind is not in it.  This is my least favorite of the three disiplines.  I think because at about mile 1.5 my right foot start to go numb ... so by 2 miles it has traveled up my leg and is pretty painful.  I am not one that takes pain very well ... and then my mental strength breaks down and I am done!

I think that it might be my shoes.  I need to go and get properly fitted ... but my time is so tight right now with everything going on.

Just having a rough time of it right now.  Not to complain!

The best thing happened to me this morning....my kids graduated from the developmental specialist!!!

Here's a short history...my kids were born 8 1/2 weeks early and spent 4 1/2 weeks in the NICU. My daughter was only 3 1/2 pounds when she was born and my son was just shy of 4 pounds. Since they were preemies they were eligible for follow-up to look for developmental delays. Well, we went this morning and both kids are developing at or above their age. I'm so excited and so relieved!!!

Jenn,

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. I would definately try to get fitted for running shoes and see what happens with your foot. I'm not the one to help with pain, but it can't hurt to get better shoes.

Please keep us posted. We're all here to help you get and stay motivated!!!

erjewels32 - 2008-01-13 4:48 PM HI Everyone, I'm wondering and this may sound crazy, but do any of you feel hungry after a workout? I've been noticing it mostly after I come home from the pool. I usually swim after I put the kids to bed and come home starving. I don't like to eat late at night, but I have been after a swim. It's weird because I don't always feel that way after a bike/run. Hope you all had a great weekend.

it doesn't seem that weird, i normally feel hungry after a swim too..  I really don't have an answer why, are you eating before your swim?   Maybe you eat before the runs/bikes???

I actually wait 2 hours before all workouts.

Shoe fit definitely is important.  I had a pair of Adistars that felt great walking around the store that caused toe cramping about 6 miles into a run.  I've also had to work a lot with lacing, when they are too tight, I experience the cramping issue as well.  Randomly, I have switched to elastic laces such as Yankz!  or Lock Laces.  They are wonderful.  I'll never tie another running shoe again.

looks like you are on the right track.  Go to a running store and get the proper fit, like Jessica sort of said it may be your shoes are tied to tight.

Start slow, maybe get in the pool and on the bike, then when you get your mood back in it, giving running a shot... I used to HATE HATE running, not that i love it now, but the more you run you will start to like it or at least have a love/hate for it.

Thanks so much for all of the advice!  My fiancé actually was wondering if I was tying my shoes too tight as well ... and we did a series of experiments over a couple days about a month ago ... and no matter how I tied the shoes I was still having the foot cramps and the foot numbness.

I just need to get my butt in gear and get to the shoe store and get fitted.

And John you are probably right about getting in the pool or on the bike and then get back to running.  My office is having a competition right now with Pedometers.  It is an 8 week challenge with teams as to who can get the most steps.  So I think that I have fried myself with running mentally because I feel like I have to ... I don't want to waste my time in the pool or on the bike when that does not count toward this challenge (the competitive side of me coming out).

Erin I am so happy for your about your kids!  I know that must be a great feeling!

Hey there!

Anyone have some good ideas on how to combat the late afternoon munchies?  From 4-6 I can't stop poking stuff in my face.  Nothing terrible, I don't keep bad stuff in the house, but I'm like a disposal between those hours.  But it's still extra calories.  Tried the drinking more water thing ...  I think there needs to be a mindset shift.  Just haven't found the happy spot.

I not sure I'll be much help here because I've been dealing with the same thing. I find myself wanting to snack in the mid-afternoon as well. I've been trying to eat a bigger breakfast (oatmeal), drinking more water, and eating a heavier lunch (peanut butter sandwich). I normally would eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast and a yogurt for lunch. I think it's been helping. I've also try to keep myself busy around the house so I don't want to just snack.

Overall, I try to eat fairly healthy. However, my biggest downfall is chocolate. I'm a chocoholic and I'm not sure I'm willing to give that up...LOL!

I'd love to hear everyone's input on this topic as well.

I have started logging my workouts ... they haven't been that great in January but oh well, I am getting there!

What works for me with the afternoon snack attack.  I eat Breakfast, Morning Snack, Lunch, Afternoon Snack, then Dinner.  I try and get protein in my Breakfast and Morning Snack ... and even my afternoon snack because that is the time that I would shove anything in my mouth if it were near.  I take the snack packs of cottage cheese to work with me ... and about 10:30 and then again at about 3:30 I have a snack.  My body has gotten used to it so I can always tell you when it is about 10:30am or about 3:30pm.  Have you tried eating something like that ... or does that not satisfy the attack?

You know, I'm thinking I always do well with a plan and the input you guys have given me really helped put that in perspective.  I'm off to Whole Foods to get my scheduled snacks ... you'll all find out soon enough I'm a slave to schedules and without one, it all goes south.  THANK YOU!!!!

I have been getting in the routine of the 6 smaller meals a day now too. It does take a little getting used to, but after a few days your body will start to tell you what time it is.

So, I'm getting close to completing the swim to a mile plan that I have been following for the past month. I'm not sure how to plan my workouts once I'm through with this current plan.

I'm wondering how do you decide your swim workout? Do you just go to the pool and swim a specified distance? Do you swim for minutes? Do you do all drills?

I found a plan (other than the BT Olympic plan that I'm currently following) that states specified swim distances for 3x a week. It sounds good to me, but I would also like to work on some TI drills? My goal for this Olympic is to GET OUT OF THE WATER!!!

Congrats...  Your swim has been GREAT!!!   You can follow your new plan if it works well for you.  I heard about a website called "swimming community", where you can put in the distance you are shooting for then they will create a swim workout for you everyday, but i think you need to go on everyday to get the workout.

Feel free to do drills, drills are always a great idea.  Normally you can do drills before the actually workout begins.   If there is ever a day where you want to just hop in the pool and just swim, then do it.  Every workout doesn't have to be the structred thing.

One thing you may want to think about is swimming 1000 yards/meters as a time trial.  First do a warm up set.  Then swim 1000 yards/meters without stopping, and time yourself.  Then a month later do it again, and see how you improved.  You need a baseline to see how much you have improved.  You would do this time trial every month.
