Wonderful report, Marianne! I'm glad it was so much fun! You've earned that good time with all your hard work! I sure enjoyed reading about it, and it inspired me to keep on!

Thanks for the concern guys. We had some tropical weather, for sure. The power went off often, for short periods, and the tornado siren sounded several times. But other then a trashy yard, we have no problems whatsoever. I sure feel for Lousiana.

Katy and Seth made it back to Tallahassee save and sound on Monday night. We had an awesome visit.

Go Bryan, GO!

Flipper - glad everyone is okay.

SpeedboatMavPhelps - again....what a job....were you wearing one of those fancy Speedo Lazr speedsuits from the Olympics or what????

Leston - good job on the wiring.  You will do great next year - remember, it's about attitude.  As far as being a newbie last year - thanks for the comment but you all have no idea how much I respect each of you and what an inspiration you are to me.  The foam roller will be a little uncomfortable as you hit the pockets of damaged tissue, you break this up and that allows new supple pliable tissue to regenerate.

Dan - did you really offer to strip Mav?????  ROFL

Did you notice that we're now onto page 40 of this discussion thread? There's one group that is onto page 70 (my, my they must be a chatty!) but otherwise we seem to be one of the more active mentor groups.

Preparing to "batten down the hatches" as Hurricane Hanna is expected to make its way up the east coast this weekend. It'll have been downgraded to a Tropical Storm by the time it gets to our cooler waters but we're still expected to get some wind and rain.

Dan - noted that Kwame Kilpatrick finally copped a plea deal yesterday and resigned as mayor of Detroit. What a saga!

Have a great weekend y'all.

Bryan, I didn't want to have Mav disqualified by having "outside help." She trained too long to be DQ'd.

FBP: It is a real happy yet sad day in our area. This guy has been a thug from day 1, yet the Detroit voters re-elected him 2 years ago. He finally got his due. Yet, the government is in shambles. We can finally move-on and hopefully get things moving in the city in a positive direction. I love Detroit and this area, yet I am almost embarassed to say that! We need a strong, positive leader that will build bridges between the city and the suburbs. There is such a division over the past 30 years (Coleman Young wasn't much better!) that needs to get mended. We are hopeful things will now start to improve!

Mav: Great Luck on Sunday!

Bryan, thanks for the info on the foam roller. I like your remark about regenerating "new supple pliable tissue" - this old rigid body could use some of that

Dan, I also saw the news about the mayor. Too bad for the city. Did I tell you that I was born in Detroit? My dad was attending Wayne State at the time. Never been back, but would like an excuse to return to my "roots." LOL.

Pete don't get too wet this weekend. Probably not a big deal for ye ol' saltys whos weather'd them Noreasters, eh?

At least to this point Post-Tropical-Storm Hanna has spared us much wrath. Torrential downpour through the night and early morning but as I write (11:00 AST) the rain is very light. Might even get out for a run this afternoon.

OK ...here goes...Last nite I wasn't sure there was going to be a tri...Hanna hit with incredible rain and wind...but dawn broke and it was clear so I headed to the race site.Lisa (red sox chick) from BT and I had been training together. It was her first tri and she was very nervous ..she had spent the night at my house because I live pretty close and she lives in Boston. It was fun to see her excitement...I felt bad for her remembering the fist tri anxiety.I have done two ther tris on this course so I knew what I was in for. This was an all womens tri and 700 registered. I'm guessing 550 showed. We met up with Svea another BT newbie(more about her latter)

Set up my transition area...and headed to the water to swim warm up. A little choppy but not too bad. They said the swim was a 1/4 mile but it was definately closer to 750. I did about 400 and then just hung out and talked to people. I was in the fourth wave (45 and older /about 100 people) I got way up front and center for the start. It was a wading start and I was first until the second set of bouys. I couldnt believe it ...I was bilateral breathing and nobody on the right or left and no one in front when I sighted.......at the second bouy heading toward shore I encountered a women who was holding onto the bouy and looked terrified. I asked her if she was ok and she said yes.. I told her I could help her but she refused. I swam a few strokes and waved to a kayak and pointed to her then continued my swim. I sure hope she was ok. Came out of the water and I was still in the front of the pack, not first but close. NO parties in transition this weekend ...and Dan I got my wetsuit off pretty easily!!!!
I dont know my splits yet but they were pretty good. I did the swim in less than 8:30

The bike was a different story...had trouble getting clipped in(which has never happened before). Once I was in I was OK. Needed water and I couldnt find my areo bottle this am (what was I thinking waiting til morning)...so I had to mess with the water bottle in the cage. Got into my pace and was climbing the first hill and BAM...chain falls off...yup...putting it back on got passed by 4 people in my age group!!! Get back on the bike and cant get the left shoe clipped...uuggghh...got it in and proceeded...did OK for the rest of the ride. Passed 2 of the 4 who passed me. There is a huge downhill on the last part of this course that I love and when I got to the hill there was a motorcycle in front of me who I was able to draft off of the entire hill(about a mile) SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!! Very illegal and I would not normally do this but ...had a lot of fun! Got back into transition and again NO PARTY this week... went quickly out on the run.

The run course is one hill after another. I am very anxious to see what my splits are as I felt pretty good on this run.Tough course. Ran with Lisa for a while which was great then I went out on my own. Crossed the finish line and met up with family and friends.Watch Lisa finish with a big smile and tears in her eyes!!!

Total time was 1:28...a little disappointing as I finished in 1:26 this spring, but that swim was shorter. I finished 9th in my age group which I was very happy about. I'm guessing there were 40-50 in my group.

Svea of my other newbie friends from BT finished 3rd in the swim, 1rst in her AG and 16th overall. While we were training she was able to keep up with me on my bike at avg speeds of 16mph ...she was on a mountain bike...so I lent her my Trek 1000 to train on and she ROCKED. I was thrilled for her and she was so excited. She is 27 years old and is an OUTSTANDING athlete. She beat the elites in the swim...just amazing.

It was a great day for me to see my BT newbie friends do so well. I LOVE THIS SPORT!!! Last race of the season for me...I'm a little sad but alot tired. I will continue to work at improving while having fun.

This week I am going to a meeting about joining a team that supports the Crohns and Colitis foundation. My daughter has this disease and I could help raise money that might someday find a cure...so I am probably going to join. The first event will be in Jan, 1/2 marathon in FLA...I am hoping for ....maybe Boston(DID I JUST SAY THAT??????). We'll see....stay tuned

Great race and race report mav!

I can tell you from experience that charity programs like the Crohns & Colitis, Team in Training (Leukemia), Team Diabetes, etc. are wonderful not only for the $$ raised but also for the awareness they build and - not that you need any encouragement on this last one - for the positive example they set about the benefits of healthy active living.

Heard this morning that a city 70 miles from us (Saint John) which is right on the coast (Bay of Fundy) got 140mm - almost 6 inches - of rain in a couple of hours yesterday. Yowser.

Ran 10k yesterday and will try to get to the pool at lunch today. The Tri at Colby College in Maine is no longer in my plans - Mrs FBP can't go and the trip would be a little too much for the family budget at this point so think my Tri season is over with only 1 race under my belt. Not to worry though as there'll be lots more opportunities next year and lots of running races still to do this year.

Have a great day y'all.

Mav,

Nice report and great race!

I know what you mean about the "clipping in" on the bike. I have had the same issue and am not very smooth when doing this. I need alot of work. I think next year I would like to learn to keep my shoes clipped-in and learn to mount barefoot and put on the shoes when I am riding.

I had my chain come off on my first tri as well! That was very frustrating. I did get a tip from another BTer who suggested downshifting to your small ring and continue to pedal. Many times your chain will go back on by itself. I haven't tried this yet (chain hasn't come off since I was told it!), but it is worth a try.

Also, I don't consider myself an expert in any way on the bike, but each time my chain has come off was when shifting from large sprocket to small sprocket while climbing a hill. I attempt to avoid doing this now at almost all cost! I will move the rear sprocket into the smallest gear and avoid moving the front sprocket while going up the hill. If the hill appears to be a monster and I will need to be in the small sprocket, I will shift into the small sprocket before going up the hill (and move my rear sprocket into the highest gear to try and keep momentum). Then don't shif into large sprocket until you are flat or downhill. This has kept me from loosing a chain for the last month or so!

Nice job on keeping the partying to a minimum (I did enough of that this weekend for everyone - my son turned 21, we had a MSU victory and then a wedding Saturday night, then closed a bar after the wedding!) in transition. STAY FOCUSED .... Good job!

Also, congrats on deciding to support a chairity. There are so many worth while causes, it doesn't matter which one you pick, just pick one and help in any way you can! I believe it is helpful when the chairty's cause has personally affected you in some way. I congratulate you and will help support you (and everyone else here) in any way I can.

Bryan, any suggestions for training or help in getting over the "I have no more tri's this year to train for" blues???? I checked some of the winter maintenance training programs on this site and they are harder than what I did all year! I don't think I could maintain that level all winter. Plus they only did running, swimming and biking. I want to incorporate a significant amount of weight training and core tightening during the winter. Their plans don't seem to address this at all. Any suggestions?

Bryan, okay maybe I'm not OLD yet but you would be hard pressed to pass me off as a BABY, but thanks for the thought anyway. Funny how our perspective changes as we age, eh? I remember thinking as a kid that a 20-year-old was old and anyone over 30 was over the hill. LOL.

Dan, congrats to the Spartans on a good win. Too bad they didn't beat Cal last week. Did you celebrate when Utah beat the Wolverines in the big house? Pretty excited Ute fans around here. Not that I'm a Ute fan - I'm true blue BYU (U of U's arch-nemesis). We BYU fans like Utah about as little as you MSU fans like UM. Anyway - sorry to go off-topic, but I'm a big college football fan. I love this time of year! Go Cougars!

Back to your problems with losing your chain. You probably have your limit screw adjustment out of whack if the chain is falling off (inside of) the small chainring when you downshift. There are two screws on the top of the front derailler that limit the movement of the swingarm. Typically, turning the screw closest to the frame clockwise will reduce how far it moves "down" when you shift to the smaller ring. Push the swingarm away from the frame with your other hand as you turn the screw to make it a bit easier to turn. That's likely the cause of your chain coming off.

Mav, great job on your race and thanks for the enjoyable report!

My first ever ride on Sebastian my chain came off as I was trying to shift from the middle front ring (I have 3 on the front) down to the smallest. I think it may have happened because I had the chain on too small a ring at the back. I'm now a little more careful about making sure that I am on the 2nd or 3rd largest ring at the back before trying to shift to the "granny" ("grampa" ?) gear up front and it's never happened again.

FBP - looks like we are going to dodge the big bullet of Ike.  Supposed to get some rain but we will see what happens.

FBP - thank you SO much for my  Terry Fox coin.  That is SO cool.  What a great gift.  It will be my bry tri token from this point forward.

Chain falling off - while continuing to pedal slowly, shift the front derailleur to the opposite ring.  Quite often, the guide moves enough to glide the chain slowly back onto the ring and you can continue your ride.  Obviously, this is tougher going uphill.  It works really well on my tri bike with the bar end shifters but at least give it a try the next time you drop your chain.

It has been a pretty tough week for me personally and professionally....nothing that can't be overcome but ..... on Sunday, I was stung by a scorpion on my left arm near the wrist, on Monday, I ran on the treadmill, went to spin class, ran more on treadmill, cooled down, stretched, went down to the locker to find my locker broken into with my suit pants stolen, along with my car keys, house keys, Rolex watch and my wallet......several hours later, police report filed and credit cards cancelled I got to bed.  We also lost a large amount of revenue at work this week.  Finally, some of you may know, I am in the investments business so 9/11 has special meaning for me.  We had a large presence in World Trade 7 and I had personal friends who got out, but will forever be changed by that day.  You may have also noticed the market was pretty volatile this week.  Now, I have shared all that crap but here is the icing on the cupcake.  Last night, we hosted a client appreciation event for 400 clients with our guest speaker being a man named Leo Thorsness.  Google him if you would like to read about him.  Here is his story in brief.  In Vietnam, he was a Wild Weasel pilot seeking out surface to air missile sites and trying to destroy them by getting them to shoot at him so they could locate the sites.  Pilots flew 100 missions and then rotated home.  On one of his final missions, he had a wingman shot down and he defended the pilot and rear seater as they fell to the earth under parachutes.   He was flying against MIGs - they were real fighters - his plane was more of a bomber - he was at a supreme disadvantage.  He killed several MIGs, then strafed the ground to protect his friends, called in the rescue mission, then went and refueled from a tanker, came back, fought some more MIGs, got some help finally, was out of gas again and called the tanker....another plane reported being even lower on fuel, Leo gave them the tanker - they hooked up as they ran out of fuel - Leo and his rear seater, Harry, flew up to 35000 feet so they could glide more distance when they ran out of gas.  They were hoping to get into Thailand as it was friendly territory.  They ran out of gas and coasted into their landing at their airfield.  It was for this action that Leo was awarded the Medal of Honor.  On his 92 and one half mission, he got shot down.  He says 92 and a half because he didn't get to make that landing.  He and Harry ejected from the plane 150 knots faster than was possible (at least that's what the experts thought at the time).  Harry hurt his back severely and Leo's knees were blown out horizontally at 90 degrees from his thighs - the wrong way - they were shot at all the way to the ground and captured.  He spent 6 years as a POW and finally, after torture and a gruelling existence he returned home.  His story is one of an AMERICAN HERO.  I met Leo about 7 years ago and am never bored listening to his story.  It is AMAZING.  He said a few things that resonate with me always, but here is one.....he says he carries five words in his pocket at all times - "do what's right - help others".  I try to live my life by that creed.  He also told about carving a whole in the mortar of his cell with a rusty nail he found to be able to peek outside through his own peephole.  One of the attendees asked him if he was able to keep the nail - he replied, "no, but I can draw you a picture of the small amount of branch I could see when I looked out that hole."  Finally, one other thought.  Leo said, "I can honestly stand before you and tell you since I returned to the United States in 1973, I have NEVER had a bad day."  What an unbelievable, incredible, inspirational story.  If you want to know more, let me know or google him as I said.

I am proud to say, Leo Thorsness is my hero.

Wow, Bryan, sorry to read of your troubles this week but thanks for posting the story about Leo. I did as you suggested and "googled" him. What an incredible individual !!!

Tomorrow is the annual Terry Fox run all across Canada and in many locations around the world so you can guess what I'll be doing tomorrow!! Weather forecast is miserable but that's no impediment.

My son Chris plays his first high school football game today. He went out for the team at the last minute so likely won't see the field much but that's OK. He's been coming home exhausted every night, getting his homework done (whichn the past ws a rare occurrence!) and going to bed. HS football here is nothing like it is in he States - they'll be lucky to get 200 people to the game.

Starting to get excited about the Learn To Run class that starts next week. So far I have 7 registrants and expect there'll be a few more in the days ahead so it'll be a great sized group.

Well, I didn't realize it was the Terry Fox run day but I did 9 miles this morning.  I love that coin....I will carry it all day since it is his day.

We are probably not going to even get rain.  Debbie went to the wedding in Chicago and O'Hare is flooded.  She couldn't get out of the airport for quite some time.  But now she is on her way to the hotel.  So she left to avoid the hurricane and may get stranded in Chicago....go figure.....a fitting end to this week.

Now, get off the internet and go workout or stretch or hug your family or something productive for crying out loud!!!

Had fun at the Terry Fox run. I opted for the 5k route and finished it in 28:15. Decent crowd of walkers/runners/wheelers doing either 1k, 5k or 10k. Started with a few words from a 2-time cancer survivor - has had BOTH legs amputated - who is now completing a PhD in nursing specializing in cancer research. Fantastic.

Where are you all? No posts in a couple of days. I have some cool news to pass along.

Last evening I had a call from Myra, the blind lady (65 years old) that I was a guide for in two half marathons last fall. This month she will complete her year-long adventure of finishing a 1/2 Marathon in every province and every territory of the country (OK my american firends - 1 point for every province you can name, 2 points for every territory you can name !!). Her next challenge? A sprint triathlon next July. Why'd she call me? To ask if I would be her guide. Yes, yes, yes!

The event will be in Parry Sound, Ontario so I will have to pay to fly there but it'll be worth it.

Bryan, wow - really sorry to hear about your challenges. I feel for you and wish you the best. Very good of you to share the story of Leo Thorsness, he certainly can help us keep a good perspective. An amazing man and an amazing story. "Do what's right - help others" is tough to do, but worth every effort for sure. Thanks for sharing that.

Pete, I hope your Learn to Run class turns out to be a great experience for you. Sounds like a lot of fun.

On Saturday my company held our annual bike race/ride around Bear Lake, which spans the Idaho-Utah border. Beautiful setting! 50+ miles around the lake. I was riding in a pace line with one of my business partners, Mike, and his son-in-law. Our goal was to finish in 2:30. After about 14 miles, Mike was riding at the back of the line when we crossed a cattle guard going about 20 mph. I hear Mike crash behind me right after I passed it. There was a small (1.5 inches) gap between the cross bars in the guard and his wheel dropped right into that gap. I heard him yell as he crashed and I was worried what I might see when I turned around. He was unconscious, lying on the road about 12 feet past the cattle guard. Basically all of his forward momentum propelled him head-first into the pavement when his front wheel stuck. A man in a truck that happened to be right behind us said that he landed squarely on his head after going over the front of the bike, he then bounced, flipped over and hit his head on the pavement a second time.

He wasn't unconscious for long, but he ended up taking a ride in an ambulance, and released from the hospital later that day after a CT scan showed no spinal injuries. No broken bones, but a nice gash over his eye, a concussion, and of course, some road rash. If you're not squeamish, you can checkout some pictures his daughter took at the hospital (http://beauandemgriff.blogspot.com/).

The point of this - PLEASE! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET WHEN RIDING. I'm sure y'all do already, but just in case you are tempted not to...There is no doubt in my mind that Mike, my good friend, would be permanently hurt if not dead had he not been wearing his helmet properly. His helmet was mashed!. Smashed in on the front and side, and split all the way from the front to the back. Scary. My heart still races when I think about what happened and how lucky he is to walk away with a few cuts and scrapes.

However...I'm starting to wonder whose death or near-death I'm going to inadvertently cause at my next event...So you guys can count yourselves lucky that you don't ride/swim/run with me

Sticka, HOW COOL!!!!!!! That will be the most fun ever to be a guide during a triathlon. I have never seen this done. I wonder what the swim will be like for you both. ...and how does this work for the bike, do you use a tandem... WOW!!!!!! I'm glad your running clinic is going well. We should really think about meeting in Maine next season for a tri. I am planning to do a 1/2 IM in late June so I will need to do some early sprints.

Leston... I dont know what to say. Thank God your friend is OK. When I read your post all I could think is you have some seriously BAD karma going on during your races!!!!!When are you doing another race??? Please stay safe

JUANITA>>>WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU??????

Dan is off improving his swimming ...

Bryan...sounds like things in Galveston are going to take a while to get back to "normal". Have you been able to keep up with your training? Wall street has really Sucked again this week...hope you are riding out the storm. I know I wont be retiring anytime soon ...if at all.

I joined "Team Challenge" for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation tonite. I will be running the Miami 1/2 Marathon on Jan 25th. This will be my first 1/2 mary. I am going to try VERY hard to raise money for the CCFA. As I said before my daughter has this disease and is disabled because of it, I also have a good friend/co-worker who is ill with it and awaiting a liver transplant. Once I get my webpage up and running I will let you know...YES I have to learn to do it!!! OMG I am so not tech savy! This could be a nightmare. Who knows...I might get an avitar somedayLOL.

I am very sad tri season is over.. I had so much fun...thanks to all of you!!!
