slow turtle - 2010-03-14 4:09 PM Well, I had a great ride on the trainer yesterday. I felt faster and stronger than I have in a long time.
Then, last night, something snapped in my foot. It caused instant pain and swelling. After a very restless night, waking up with the pain, I went to urgent care this AM. No broken bones, but the Dr thinks I ruptured a tendon.
So, I'm on crutches and have a referral to go to ortho this week.
No working out for at least a week for me. I'm already going stir crazy.

Sorry to hear that slowturtle...I hope it is not too bad or turns out to be something that is fast healing.

Take Care.  Positive vibes your way .....+Vibezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I, too, send my best wishes for a speedy recovery!!   (At least you were doing some real training...  I'm still mad at myself for going for the hula hoop record on our Wii!)  After losing 2 months to an injury, I know how frustrating it can be to come back from it.  In addition to the rehab exercises, I spent the time working on upper body / core muscles.  Good luck with your recovery!

Sorry to hear about that, whish you a speedy recovery.

I escaped a injury last night at hockey, I stopped a shot with my foot (Yes I know that was silly). Luckily all I got was a big bruise, not affecting me walking or running. Oh ya! my arch problem has healed almost 100%. On Friday I ran to catch my train and realized half way there that I didn't feel anything on my foot. So the rest and shorter runs have helped.

I just got back from a great swim.  I ended up circle swimming with two guys who are faster than me.  That sure pushed me!

I hope everyone is doing well today.

Should have also mentioned that I've been doing lots of stretching, especialy the calves. You were probably right in suspecting plantar fasciosis because if it was what I thought there is no way it would have healed this fast. Well I'm just glad it's healing.

Thanks for all the support!
I went to see the ortho today. He actually is the Doc who consults with the NY Giants when they are in town for spring training.
Before he looked at my foot, I talked to him about my lifestyles and goals (Thanks for the tip  Michael). I wanted to make sure he didnt assume I was a typical soccer mom in her 40's.
He feels that I have a stress fracture and some tendon damage. He put me in a boot cast for 2 weeks. I can start swimming in a week. He assured me that this is how he would treat one of the giants, if they had my injury. He said that if my goal was "to wear cute shoes and be able to walk the mall", he would treat me less conservatively.
Time to do some core workouts.

Awesome.  That's a lot better than it might have been.  Glad to hear that you are basically OK.  It is great to have a doctor you can trust.

Happy mending slowturtle.  I guess the cast would also inhibit you from doing anything as well.  I would bet most of us would have a hardtime holding back if it wasn't in a cast.

Went ahead and did my Bike Ride this evening as it looks like rain tomorrow.  Nine 1 minute short hill climbs  in a high gear with 2 min. active recovery plus enough beginning and ending to cover 70 minutes of riding.

Way ahead of where I was at last year (of course I was just starting out) @ this point in the season.  Probably better fitness now than I was at the end of last year.  Feeling good about all 3 disciplines at this point.

Day off tomorrow.

Did an easy run last night with a half mile at faster pace (-2:00/mi off easy pace) to test foot. Did not seem to affect it, did not feel any pain this morning. Seems all good. Did 30 min on Stationary bike this morning. I will try to sneak out tonight to do a swim, if not I will get my core/weights done.

Have a good day everyone.

Have you all ever come across the Expresso stationary bike machines?  They just put some in at our club a month or so ago and these are a really nice upgrade from the usual stuff.  They have video courses with varying terrain, pacer bikers, steering, and a ghost bike of your best ride on each course.  Really nice upgrade ... definitely motivates me more and makes the indoor bike experience significantly more engaging.  Still not outdoors, but vast improvement.

My Y has them...but I've never used them.  I figure I have a trainer at home, so if I'm at the Y, I'm in the pool or running on the track.  I cycle indoors at home in front of the tube.  I either watch an old Kona that I have on tape, a movie or live sports.

Turtle, get well soon!  I'm sure you can find lots of stuff to keep you busy until that cast comes off.  Swimming sounds like a great idea.

As a follow-up to my long run/10% rule question, I'm thinking I should adhere to it more stringently.  I had no problem with the distance, even though it was a big jump in volume over the previous two weeks.  However, I have felt a little twinge in my right knee the past couple days.  Honestly I felt A-OK until 24 hours later when I ran on a treadmill for 30 seconds at the running store, trying out a pair of racing flats.  That's where the twinge started, but the day before's run probably  set it up.  Probably just my body reminding me to be more conservative.  I promise I'll listen.

Checking in, it's been really crazy. Had a long run on Saturday and at the 8 mile mark I thought "I really need new shoes!" Right after the run I went to running store and got fitted for a new pair of Brooks "Beasts".

Ran short 3.7 miles tonight and could not believe the difference a new pair of shoes makes. Next time I won't weight 7 months for a new pair! New lessons learnd every day.

Happy St. Paddy's, workout buddies!

Music marathon tonight... playing from 6pm - 2am with only an hour break.  From 6-7 with my daughter.  We play together at home, but this will be the first time in public.  Really looking forward to that - she's become a fantastic fiddle player and even though I'm clearly biased, as a musician (not just her father), she's a joy to play with.  Another one of those senior (in high school) moments.  Next up, college acceptances (fingers crossed) and spring break visits.  I'm really excited for her (while at the same time, not ready for empty nest).

Just going to do a 10K this morning to save energy for later.  Hopefully will feel up to a good workout in tomorrow.  We've got a nice stretch of weather ahead of us in Virginia... need to take advantage of it.

I've only seen pictures of them.  They look cool, though.  Like Scout, all my stationary riding is at home.

That's a long session!  I did some studio work for beer money when I was a grad student, and once or twice we had some marathon sessions like that, but mostly they want you in and out of there pronto as they are paying for everything by the hour.

Have a great time!

We avoid the middleman and get the beer while we work :-)  Which will undoubtedly make for a sloppy last hour or two.

Was able to sneak in a run before picking my daughters yesterday afternoon. I just wanted to run in the sun. Felt great, upped my pace to zone 2 for 2.5 miles. Next week I'll increase the distance, foot should be OK but won't know until I try. Having a hard time getting to my bike and swim workouts, crazy work hours these days with major work projects on the go. Hopefully after April 18 things will calm down and I'll be able to get 3 workouts in each sport. Unfortunately need a job to pay for the all food I eat and equipment I need to train and race.

Enjoy the sun the everyone!

The rain finally stopped up here in MA earlier in the week - we had 4 days totalling 10+ inches in spots.  (I'm just glad that it was 38 degrees instead of 28 which would have been enough snow to sled off the roof!)  Though we live near a stream, there was never a hint of flooding until yesterday - two days after the rain stopped.  I went into the basement to find 94 gallons of water (yes, I counted the number of times I emptied the shop vac...).  Apparently, the water table had risen underground and water seeped in around the base of the foundation.  I spent most of yesterday cleaning up, only to watch the water come back into the house right behind me.

Long story, short, I'm going to call this week a recovery week.

I did make it out for a short run at lunch today and, despite the injury delay, am on pace to be ready for the season opener in 51 days.

Continues to be a crazy week. I have had to cut back on training a little. Still getting the running in because of 1/2 mary coming up in TWO and HALF WEEKS. Deep breaths, deep breaths.

3.7 mile short run tonight. 12 mile run tomorrow. Why wont my legs move faster. Yell
