aquagirl - 2010-01-25 2:36 PM Hey Gary?
I loved your analogy about my "vibrating" fingers being like the hand out the car window..........BINGO!
This is exactly EXACTLY how it feels.

So its a good thing I guess? My buzzing fingers?

I worked as a hypnotist.. so I"m really good with different analogies

OK ......swim GURU sir....now that we have established that my buzzing fingers are a good thing, I have another query:
Where do you stand on the controversial hand entry debate??
The more I read about it the more confused i get.
Please tell me the BEST place for ideal hand entry.
Feel free to use all the funky analogies you want ok??

I'm not sure where I stand or float.    honestly I have no clue where my hand enters the water, I think it's right around the head area or just in front, and my hand extends the rest of the way just under the surface of the water. I honestly don't think there is a universal best place, just a best place for each person.   when I see people whose hand enters the water with their arm all the way extended it just seems weird to me,  I'm not sure if I would start it before your head level though..

Yes please on hand entry.  How about the pattern of the arm from entry to the hip... I have been told "draw an S" "draw an open c" and "climb the rope"...which is better? Or, am I totally off with using any of those?

My main key about hand entry is to make sure your hand is flat as it enters the water, I see lots of people where the thumb is the first thing in the water.  Make a touchdown sign with your arms but have your hands flat not karate chopping the water. that puts my hands just a touch wider than shoulder width apart.. that's pretty much where my arms are,  The one area coach who is more new school will tell people to pull that arm straight back, like you have a beachball between your body and arm.  She is under the belief that a straight line is best.  so it's straight out, pull straight back. like if you are jumping out of the pool with your arms to each side.

another coach doesn't mind that old school "S" if you are doing it if you are really feeling the water, but even then He doesn't want your arm going under your body.   It depends on the water and how I'm going that day if my stroke is straight or a little "S" like.. I think that with your body rotation even a straight pull can look like an "S" from the deck.

Do me the catch is really important, that first couple of inches when you grab the water, while my stroke doesn't look like it, I will think to myself that my catch is almost a two part process,  where I start by tipping my wrist down (like a basketball player follow through while shooting) then pull hard

Morning all - got in a nice 6 mile run this morning.  The weather had been beautiful here the last few days - highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.  Today and tomorrow its cooling off a little - this morning was about 50 degrees warming up to low 70s.  Perfect running weather!!
Good to hear everyone is slowly getting back in the groove from being injured/sick.  Enjoy the day!!

Good morning y'all!

I went for my long overdue pulmonary function assessment this morning.  What a workout that was for my lungs, they're still burning! My physician and I will review the results in three weeks time.

On the menu today: 1h20m indoor bike workout with friends in friend's basement.

Have a good day everyone!

Hello, Helen's group.  All doing well??

Hey Philthy... it looks like most of the wogging wounded are getting better... we hope this is a trend.

How are you doing Phil? Still getting into lots of trouble I hope.

Not yet anyways.  Helen's keeping me in check.

Philthy do you require DISCIPLINE?????

Do you have whips and leather boots??

What time and where? I wanna come too.

I will probably be attempting an easy spin myself ... on the rollers.... followed by a swim. I want to get in my 15,000m before the end of the month.

Last night was a right off due to Sweetums having some shoulder issues. I spent about 1.5 hours massaging her shoulder in the course of the evening. Made supper... did some clean up... ran her a HOT bath... basically taking care of her for the evening. I think that should be a training option in the logs. What say you gentleman? LOL

Well, there is a "Misc." option in the Sports section you can choose.

I watch coach troy's spinervals almost every time I'm on the trainer I must have 2 dozen. What bugs me is he always comments on the strongest guy, hardly ever on the women or average guy, he reads off that guys power and or cadence, hr often even when he's not following instructions....okay done ranting, it's nice so I will play outside today.

2 hours on the drainer... not so bad with the right company. Alone it's almost intolerable... with other's along for the ride and some motivation from coach Troy it can be almost acceptable...

actually now..  I read the book and gave it to a girl I was dating a year or two ago to help her.. I think TI is great if you need to get confidence to swim,, but it makes you a confident slow swimmer.

I assumed you were a TI fan because of your preference for early hand entry and reach under the water. This is TI stuff all the way.
Two schools of thought out there.
Hence my confusion!!
Confidence to swim I DO NOT need.....i am so completely at home in the water, any water.....even rough open water.
All I want is a bit more speed!

I don't care who he focuses on. I follow the workout to the best of MY abilities, and could care less what the other's on screen are doing. They are just there for window dressing, all I want is the cues for what to do and when. I turn off the music and listen to my own sound track as well.

When we do triathlon's we are racing ourselves... what other's are doing is inconsequential. Unless you're racing for the podium, nothing else should matter. Our thought process should be: Am I pushing myself hard enough? Will I be able to finish at this effort level? and if you ask me... the most important question... Am I having fun?

As a recreational cyclist, triathlete, runner, swimmer... what ever you are... you have to remember the most important descriptor.... recreational... this is fun. Don't take anything serious and just enjoy what you're doing. Everything else is not important.

Hey who you calling RECREATIONAL???

as silly as it sounds to get faster swimming, swim faster with shorter breaks... While the place I've been swimming at doesn't have a pace clock so I use rest intervals, the one thing I don't like about them is you dont know if you are slowing down when you are swimming..   I'd much rather do 100's @ 1:45 that way if I slow down I have a short break

Today I swam 4000. I took 1 min breaks between each 500 ( yeah a little long but I needed to stretch) I had a perfect 2 min/100 pace the entire time. Slow and easy but consistent!!!!!LOL
