DV 1 - 2011-02-04 4:17 PM Boy am I glad I put the HTFU hammer down on that bad night's rest I got last night. Just finished my brick (trainer for 45 min and 5 mile interval run) At about mile 3 of the run I felt something I'd never felt before.

I've never really struggled with running, but I've also never really felt lke a runner. I've lost about 12 lbs in the past 3 months of training and have been feeling better and better every day. So around mile 3, I had a mental epiphany, "....Hey you....you running on the treadmill....you're a runner. Your legs feel good, the annoying phantom pains here and ther are neither distracting nor concerning, you're having a good time - with lots of energy in the tank, and the 5 mile finish line is a joke." For the first time ever, I actually felt like, acted like, and thought like a runner.

You know I kind of think one of the cool things about triathlon training, as a newby, has been the influence of nutrition on my training. I've run a few HM's before, but you drink some water and gatorade during those and you're fine....so I thought. I've been reading about the nutritional needs of longer races and am beginning to test out those theories as I get into longer brick sessions. Well low and behold....they works! No doubt in my mind that proper nutrition during my HM's would have yielded much better results.....as I sit here in front of the tv eating chips and dip :-)

Last thing to say is that I wish the gosh darn snow would melt and the weather would warm up. I usually don't wish away days, but I'm getting pretty excited to get this new beast of a bike I built this winter out on the roads for some real mileage. It's gonna be a fun Spring!!!

Runners high baby...it's a beautiful thing.  Enjoy it.  I woke up from 4 hrs of sleep with a very stiff neck and just generally not feeling great today.  Toughed it out but looking forward to my day off tomorrow (For the first time!!

Glad things went well for you. I've had some of my best training sessions when before I didn't feel that great. I've also had some of my worst when feeling super pumped up before. I don't think I'll ever figure out why. Just enjoy it when it happens I guess.

JG_GreenCoast - 2011-02-04 9:36 AM Well I completely f***ed up my 1000Yd TT today.  I went out way too hard but thought I was fine.  I am really disappointed but at least it's not race day.  I jumped in and swam the first 500 continuous at a pace of 1:30/100 (well actually just a shade under) then really needed breath at 500.  Flipped to my back for 30 seconds and swam on but let up considerably.  Then, at about 700 needed more breath.  Then, at 850 or so got a stomach cramp.  Ended up finishing the 1000yds in 19:34 but am a little bit pissed at myself.

Happy this wasn't race day, and that i'm back at my comp just thinking about it, but was really hoping for a better TT.

How did your knee feel?  Okay?  Those craps will get ya...hate that!

I sort of did the TT today to.  I pushed a bit harder than usual, but once I finished the 1000yds and saw my time I was pissed at myself for not going all out to see just what I could do.  I ended up at 16:06 but once I was finished I was sure I could have dropped a good 20sec off that.  Darn it.  Makes me want to do it over tomorrow to see what I can really do.

Now the 10k time trial on Sunday is freaking me out.  I hate running and the thought of going hard makes me want to vomit.  haha.  We will see how it goes, but it isn't going to be pretty.

Nice swim times. I just did my 1000m and was almost spot on with yours JG. I was a bit in the same boat as you, I wasn't sure how hard to go at the start, but I still managed.

Today I had to do the 1650m of ladders. Holy crap, that got me good. I thought I was going to lose it a few times at about the 70%-80% through spot. But I finished.

The gym was packed though, damn people and their non-etiquette. I think I might talk to the management about posting some rules for the pool so people can wait their turn instead of forcing people to have a poor workout because the others can't wait 5 minutes.

Nice, I feel ya on all fronts here.  When I went to the suit dryer this guy cuts in front of me and takes off a sweatband and two wristbands coming from the basketball court and holds them down for like 10sec in the dryer.  I was frustrated because people were being jackasses earlier that day at the gym and let him know that it was for swimsuits.  I said this is for water not sweat.  His ingenious response, "it's a dryer and sweat is water".  I said it's disgusting and use a washing machine.  Err I fume about these people when I go to the gym.  That and people at my pool are idiots too about waiting.

From swimming through the cramps, my entire core is sore/strained.  It really doesnt feel good, under ribs and just everywhere I am generally very tender.  It hurts when I cough or flex/move that area of my body.  Ugh. Blows.

Keep in mind that I am posting yard distances and times.  You are doing meters...more distance.  Your times are great!

Well my 10k wasn't pretty.  (Took me just under an hour) Just doesn't matter how I cut it...I suck at running.  Anything over 5 miles and I become a 9:30-10min miler.  I can do fairly well in the swim, hold my own in the bike...then in the run I just watch everyone pass me by and can't do anything about it.

I'll trade with you.  I think I'm a pretty strong runner and generally suck at swim and am mediocre on bike.  I'd love to be able to kick the swim...but alas.  I am running my 10K tomorrow.  I feel pretty under the weather and just went out for a heavy dinner and a bit of drinking with my lady. I'm hoping for 45 mins, but its certainly optimistic thinking about my sore abs and runny nose + watery eyes.  Still gonna go out and try and get it tomm.

What is generally your pacing for these runs? Curious about your laps.  When I run long (10+mi)i try to run even or maybe positive splits (i.e. start at 9:45/mi and finish at 10:00/mi) but when I am running a 10k try for negative.  I am gonna try to run the first 4 miles at 8min or just a shade under pace tomm and then if i can pick up to a little faster at mile 4 try to just let me legs do the running

I really needed this!

Have been in pieces this week and a bit of sickness too.  Running a half marathon a week from today (Rock and Roll New Orleans Mardi Gras Half) and after just 4 hours of training this week I felt pretty crappy.  Even though I didn't feel good this morning or run in good circumstances it is a big confidence builder.  I'm not really someone who believes that bad sleep and hangover/sick or whatever else is an excuse to have a bad run and i think if you try you just get it done.

On Sunday I will try to do better, get some real sleep, with nutrition, and no drinking the night before.  I'm hoping to come in a shade under 1:45.  1:40 is a long shot for me but it's on my mind! I'll let you know how it goes

I'm curious as to what you all think, particularly Jessica, about this upcoming week for me.  This is week 08 of the plan: http://beginnertriathlete.com/Scott%20Herrick/halfim/Week08.pdf

Basically, I am running a half marathon on Sunday and am going to give it a high level of effort as the time means something to me.  Sunday is the first substantive SBR workout and I could just do the half in lieu of this.  I want to keep the saturday free.  What do you guys think I should do/rearrange for this week?

Thanks!

You learn more from your failures than from your successes. Learning pacing is very challenging. You are now closer to perfecting this than you were before that workout.

There will be other opportunities to do a race simulation day, so sub in the race for that workout on Sunday. I don't think you should do the 90 minute run, either, if you really want to do well in the HM.
Take Saturday off or jog for no more than 20 minutes. Friday you can keep the swim, Thursday do no more than 60 minutes of running. Perhaps 45 minutes with 5x30 seconds of strides with about 1-2 minutes between.
Good luck!!

Hoping I feel much better then...my legs are certainly shot from the 10k tt and I am still very under the weather.  Still excited though

Go for it!!!  Aim for negative splits.  Go for 8, 7:45, and 7:30 miles.  Hell, if you can sustain 7:30-7:45 all the way, just go for it.  Be ready for pain the day after for sure...

Lol I still have some pain from my 10k.  Went for the first recovery run today and doing another this afternoon.  Talking to my coach he thinks I should run the first 1/2 (he says closer to 2/3) at 8 min miles before I take off.  This is definitely my "B race" and he thinks I should keep that in mind.  I'm ready for the pain.
