If necessary, keep repeating that to yourself as you glance through the pages with drool running down your slack-jawed face. Peace, ~Sam Ha ha! you had me cracking at the slaw-jawed face ( I can totally relate). Great job with vid episode 7 and your last interview post! thomas |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just signed up for a 2 mi swim "race" in a pool! It's not really a race against each other, just a race against time. Should be interesting. It's March 26th here in Springfield. That should make me a little more confident as I train for this IM. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ahleigh- I hope somebody is counting laps for you. I would certainly need a counter. Sounds cool though. Enjoy. Chose not to force the issue of going to the pool this morning. I've been battling a sinus "thing". I was very much congetsted and my head was pounding. I determined sleeping a bit more might be more prudent. HAPPY FRIDAY! Peace, ~Sam |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning everyone, I got lazy last night and by the time I got home from work (1hr drive), there was no energy in the tank for a workout. I am PLANNING to go straight to the gym for a swim and work on speed! Speaking of speed! I purchased my first TT helmet today- I got it for under 50 dollars. check the Super Unreal deals of the day in www.e-rudy.com ![]() Edited by golfpro 2011-02-25 8:31 AM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anybody running the Cowtown Marathon in Ft. Worth this weekend? I'll be there. I'm looking to see the benefits of all this off-season running. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Ashleigh, I'm the one who also works nights (5pm to 5am) with every other weekend off. It can certainly be tough for training, but I have already done 2 full IM races on that schedule so you can definitely get it done. It is really tough getting the long rides and runs in on the weekends I work, but with a little sleep deprivation and sacrificing every semblance of a life I may otherwise have, I am usually able to get it all in. Outside of that, the biggest difficulty for me is doing races: they always start really early in the morning so it is the relative equivalent of someone on a "normal" schedule going out and doing a race at midnight. I just deal with it for the smaller races, but for something as big as the IM I start burning my days off (I get 25 per year, so no biggie). Last year I took a week off before the race and a couple days after, and I was able to get myself to sleep by 10 or 11pm by the last couple nights before the race (thank you melatonin). For this year I am thinking about either taking 2 weeks off just to get really adjusted to it, or (*wincing*) asking to switch to day shift in the spring. I hate day shift and love night shift so it would be a pretty big sacrifice, but the wife really wants me on her schedule so I may do it. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know I am behind the 8-ball on this, but for me I am actually way ahead! I now sort of officially have my race schedule set. I have signed up for the big races, but will sign up for the smaller ones as they get close. You will notice a significant lack of marathon races because my coach doesn't want me taking the recovery time necessary after a race like that, so I have thrown in the much more manageable half-marathons in their place. I chose to do the Muncie half because the timing was right and I live close enough that I don't even need a hotel. Cash in my pocket! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I would love to ride the course, but I've heard similar tales of woe regarding the lack of welcome wagon for athlete's riding it. I don't want to discourage people from riding, but please, please, please, be careful and be submissive to the "race fans" in 2,000 pounds of metal who are none-to-thrilled to have us grace there roadways. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tulkas, I will be doing the Muncie 70.3, I just signed up for it last week. It will also be my first HIM. My best friend, who moved in with us, is from Farmland, so Muncie will be great, since her family is like a second family to me and I will have a lot of support. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hate to hear that about the motorists in the Louisville area. My very preliminary plans have me in Central Kentucky about 10-14 days before the race. I was hoping to ride some of the course. I remember reading some of the race reports in 2009 about tacks in the road. Not cool. Still dealing with a cold. I tried to run 45 minutes today, but I had the worst sweats (atypical for me) and diziness. It took all I had just to get to 22.5 minutes. Bummer. I'm not discouraged, but i am bummed a bit. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all,How is everyone's training going?Does anyone know if there was a problem with tacks last year?-Noah |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone!!! I just need to hear POSITIVE things about this race Please!!! and here is why: In the last few days I have heard very negative things like the tacks on the street during the IM race, how unfriendly the locals were, due to the time trial people are lining up at 3am? or earlier?...Ohio river water is very dirty and disgusting...ran out of hydration... etc etc...Now the above is from prior racers. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() trirun26- If I thought this event wasn't full of awesomeness I wouldn't be coming back for more. When I was there in 2009, I only personally witnessed one thing that suggested athletes were not welcome, and that's because I happened to look down at the road to see the negative message. If I had missed that, I would not have experienced anything negative. My family and I ate at a quaint little restaurant on River Road, located on the course, just before the first hill. The establishment would basically be cut off from the world because the road would be closed for IMLOU. The owner was checking on us and she asked if I was doing the race. When she found out I was she smiled and told me how wonderful it was. She asked me what color I would be wearing and said she would be looking for me. How's that for positivity? The Ohio River is murky and warm like somebody's coffee with cream that had been out for awhile, but the energy from the event makes this irrelevent. As far as I'm concerned, it beats freezin' my a** in some cold body of water. Don't lose heart. This is a great event. If you want to find fault in anything...you will. If you want to find positivity in anything...you will. What will you look for? It's good and you will like it. ![]() Peace, ~Sam tulkas- The IM World Championship listed on your events with the note of on your t.v. was fantastic. Gave me a good laugh...of approval and appreciation of my reality as well. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, perhaps I was misunderstood or wrote that poorly about the unwelcoming locals. The experience I was referring to was a training ride with just 2 people (my wife and I) on a Saturday in June, NOT the race. I was making the point that if you plan to ride the entire course before the race, it is probably better to go in a big group because the locals didn't seem accustomed to having cyclists on those roads. Go for the strength in numbers thing. Edited by tulkas 2011-02-26 2:19 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you TriSam and Tulkas! I am so looking forward to the race! and I know there will always be some fool saying negative stuff about races..Oh well. I Just wanted to hear some positive experiences of prior racers... ![]() Now for some fun in the snow next week (Colorado) and then some serious training in this hot and humid sunny South Florida! Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I have wanted to do an IM since before my first sprint but when I went and saw people finish IMLO last year I was moved and made up my mind to do it (with the help of a buddies prodding). Now, I am an Army veteran that has done foreign deployments, very specialized training, and gotten caught up in/or finished some really cool and emotional stuff. I am not impressed easily. But I literally had goose bumps in balmy late august when I went downtown to the 4th street live area last year for IMLO... this is the turnaround for the run loop and where the finish is located. Also, earlier in the day I was at the other run turnaround at Iroquois Park and saw the brit start his final loop for the win. I have probably ran that same route over a dozen times in the past but that day it just felt different... like something so much more. No, I am not crazy about swimming in the Ohio river but it is necessary. The bike course is going to be challenging for me but I think that the hills will also give back a little too. Also consider the beautiful bike route. You will have rolling hills, horse farms, loud cheering small towns, and then also a quiet countryside where the loudest thing you hear is your own breathing and pedal cranks. So don't fret... I know this is going to be worth it!!!! ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Solid week of training ![]() I did a short swim today with 500 yd to determine my ave /100yd, very surprised o see my ave at 1:35/100, last year a good swim put me at 1:47/100. Very excited to see what else has improved once I can get outside, foot of snow up here on Friday, 51 on monday, only in NE Ohio. Also I've lost ove 10 lbs thus far, trying to ge to a racing weight between 165-170 by june. Adam |

I'm scheduled to walk/run tomorrow, but my Achilles is still a bit tender, so I'm going to try to hold myself back another week. Looking forward to swimming in the a.m. though. Peace, ~Sam |
