Linda  - one thing I forgot to include in my e-mail is that the hill on the second half of the bike portion (going down it) make sure to slow down big time.  It curves at that 180 degree angle before the next downhill.  Apparently they have a few pretty big crashes every year and now have an ambulance stationed there.  So, as tempting as it is to capture that momentum, better be safe than sorry and use your brakes.

I want to wish everyone good luck this weekend. You've all did amazing job up to this point. Nothing is going to change physically now to Sunday, you won't get any fitter ect.  Hydrate, RELAX and stay off your feet Of course the most important part HAVE FUN, to me you're all triathletes... I look forward in reading each of your race reports. Race your race and remember to leave everything on the course.

Jen - I am in the same boat as you, very few of my friends even workout and they think I am crazy.  I get up at the early hour of 10:30 am Laughing to do my run or bike before work.  Then shower, pack my lunch and it's off to work I go (1-11pm).  4 days a week I do a swim. I hit the pool around midnight.  It's so peaceful, but you'd think I could swim better with doing this consistently.  A new goal I have is to get myself in good enough swimming shape that I can take a masters class this winter.  So, it sounds like I am going to bed a few hours before you guys head out for your morning workout.

thor67 - 2011-06-24 8:57 AM Well the bad news...no race for me July 1, apparently Canada Day(=July 4) is necessary to go to parade with family... Good news still in the race for July 17, another Sept.5. Might try squeeze one in August and another Sept. 11. Time, family and holidays will guide me in this regard!

charminchick - 2011-06-23 9:45 PM I got a Garmin (finally) for my 12th wedding anniversary. My husband knows exactly what to get me!

Awesome which one?

It's a 210X, but gives me everything I need. I have a question about the HR strap. Do you put it on in a race when you transition out of the water? Or can you wear it in the water? I am racing Sunday and that will really be my first chance to use it.

I wear mine in the water, The HR strap looks like mine, so wear it

Good workouts this week. I've rebooted and started from the begining of the 12 week basic plan.  Did a short bike/run this am and it felt great! Notably, some of the hills on my bike ride are getting ALOT flatter. They're not very big, but just a few weeks ago they wore me out...now I'm hardly noticing them!

Have a great weekend ya'll!

Ok - here is the low down on my 1st tri.  I will Jen comment on her wonderful accomplishments so this is just about me.

Swim - I got into the water before the race.  There were no waves, the buoys were easy to see.  I stayed back and let the group run out first, just text book and was only kicked once.  I was dead LAST, overall, except for the guy that Jen & my kids told me was rescued.  I was offered assistance but of course I kindly thanked the canoe folks for their offer but struggled on. Mind over water so to speak.  Oh and last means over every man, women and child that particpated in the event.  My swim time was 14:02 (1/4 mile)and the female winner was 6 something.  Ouch....guess we know where my focus will continue to be.  My kids were screaming like banshees "yeah mom, we are so proud of you, go mom"  well they were easy to hear since all the other participants had left the area.  And did I mention that I was missing one contact so I couldn't see in one direction.  I am going with the glass 1/2 full approach, better one than none (and I have pretty bad eyesight).

Transition -went well.  I used Thor's idea of the clear plastic shoe boxes.  One was bike, one was run.  Also, I used the non-stick stuff that made my wetsuit just peel off like a banana. (2:08)

Bike - Unfortunately, I was so exausted by the swim that it took me until around mile 7 before I felt like my breathing and legs were back to normal.  Passed one person right away, just because I could see her and knew I was in 2nd to last place.  Then passed 5 more after mile 7, mostly because people were not pedaling downhill.  No one passed me. So, the first part was hard and the last part was ok. (54:07 for 12 miles)

Tranisiton - No problems, switched out my shoes, had the tongues out and laces loose on running shoes.  Put race belt and watch on as I jogged from the transition area.

Run - Flat, nice, was able to pass 5 more people on the run and no one passed me.  Jen beat my running time by 1 second!  (36:21 for 3.6 miles)

Total time was 1:48:15, 85/95 overall females and 9/11 in my age group.

I know it sounds like a real disaster, but overall I am not disappointed.  I knew that this would be tough and hurt, but it's a starting place.  I will practice the OWS until I can shave some time off and not expend all my energy there.  Lots of room for improvement for me!

Can't wait to hear how everyone else did.

Linda

First of all, I have to say how awesome was that!!!  I finished, didn't have to get rescued and ran pretty damn well (for me).

We got there (yes, the boyfriend and his eight year old daughter came with and woke up at 5 am to leave), and right when I was walking in, the first person I saw was Linda!  It was so neat to see her and meet her, too bad we didn't take a picture then because by the end that was one of the last things on my mind.  I went and set up my transition area  The pictures you shared were awesome.  The sky looked pretty good but as  time went by we starting thinking it might downpour on us, thankfully it never did.

The swim went well, I definitely need to be more efficient on my strokes but ended up passing a few guys in the water (we had staggering starts - some six minutes ahead of me and others three).  I actually got out of the water and said under my breath "wow" because I passed some guys.  One of the race officials laughed at my realization that I did that.

T1 was great, wiped down a bit, put on my helmet, glasses and shoes and off I went.  Not even my first mile on the bike my chain fell off the gear.  I had to stop and get that fixed.  Easily that took two minutes to get back on.  All I could think about was how the hell that happened on a flat road and this can't be my story...  Not finishing because of the damn chain falling off.  Eventually I got it on and got in my groove.  Felt great.  The first hill went well and then the second.  I was surprised with how many people were walking their bikes up the hill.  Finished the bike strong and made the transition nice and quick.  Got my legs back about five minutes into the run and had a great pace.  My HR was up there - 165 average for the race (upper Z3 for me, but felt great).  Half-way through the run I asked a lady what she was pacing and she told me we were at 10:20, another wow moment for me (I was expecting to run this a 12 minute mile).  At mile 3 I asked another lady what we were running (I had passed the other lady) and she told me we were running 9:30, another wow (actually holy crap).  She ran with me to the end, I couldn't have done it without her, she kept on telling me to beat her and that I could do it.  My sister, her kids and my bf's daugther all ran with me the last minute yelling for me.  I felt like I was going to die.  I made it and felt amazing.  At the finish line I had the best crew - my mom, dad, boyfriend, his daughter, sister, three of her kids, my trainer and I beat the lady that was running with me daring me to beat her.

It felt amazing, probably the best feeling I have ever felt in my whole life.

Here's my time:

Overall: 184 (out of 275)

Div Place  15/18

Sex 68/95

Swim 9:48

T1: 1:44

Bike: 45:30 (including my chain debacle)

T2: 0:48

Run:  36:20

Time: 1:34:08

My goal was to finish in under 1:45:00

Great job on the race and awesome race report. On Sprints, don't worry about your HR data, Since it's a sprint you could have gone into Z4 and Z5 as well. Great job and awesome job pushing yourself on the run.

Linda, you've been amazing thus far. Congrats on your finish you did amazing as well.  I'm glad you left the race wondering how I could have gotten faster.  As I always told you guys, you won't win the race with the swim but you most certainly lose it.  Look into buying lock laces or yanks for your shoes. This will help as well for your shoes.

Keep up the great work!

Scott

I've changed my race plans.  Instead of doing a bigger tri with a 1/4 mile swim and a 22 mile bike I opted to do a local sprint with a 1/4 mile swim and shorter bike.  It is at a lake I can swim in frequently and so I will up the comfort factor.  Also, it is not until August 6th so it will give me all of July to work on my swim.  The only downside is that I may not be able to wear a wet suit depending on the water temp.  Since it is in August and a small lake I am planning to do plenty of swimming without the wetsuit.  EEEKKKK but it's my security blankie.  Bit the bullet, jumped back on the bucking bronco that tossed me off and signed up a few minutes ago.  I will do this!!!!!  GrrrrrrYell

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement.

Almost forgot to mention I had another bowling tourney happening this past weekend!  California State Open championships this time in Fresno.  I kind of regret taking the summer bowling leagues off since my level of consistency has dropped a bit but I had fun regardless!  =)

Mediocre performance for singles and doubles event on Saturday but killed it on team event Sunday!  225 + 247 + 180 = 652.  It was getting hot in the bowling alley that 3rd game and my thumb started swelling causing my ball to get stuck on my thumb a little but at release messing up my shots, but my team did pretty well overall.  Based on the current standings I think we may cash for that event.  Yay!

Recovery week for me this week!  Happy training everyone! =D
