Congrats, Gabe!! I'm very biased towards boys (two of 'em) but you can save a ton of money in hand-me-downs with another girl. I'm excited for you and your family.

My engineering mind just developed a plan to win the challenge...I am 1 day behind everyone, but WAY behind on time. Since, according to the rules, any race 5K or longer gives you 1 point for that day, the day before and the day after, I need to:

a) Not miss any more days

b) run a 10 K on Jan 31, which will give me 1 point for Feb 1...total 31 points

c) run it REALLY slow (like 2 hr/mile), to make up for lost time (I will just say I was following Maffetone's method)

d) Sneak in to Guatemala and puncture Gabe's bike tires so he cannot do any more 4 hr rides

Like Kramer would say: GOLD, JERRY, GOLD!

Samy,

I know you were only joking, but I wanted to see if you technically came up with a way around the rules, just as a test to see if I actually wrote them bulletproof enough. Here is what I wrote

Rules for January Challenge.

Players are ranked first by their number of "points". If one player has more points than another, he or she is ranked higher.

Players are ranked second by their total number of minutes of swimming, biking and running in January. If one player has the same number of points as another, but more total minutes, he or she is ranked higher.

Points are earned as follows:

For every day in January , a player can earn one point, or zero points. To earn the point for that day a player can

a) Swim, bike, or run for at least 30 minutes.

b) Participate in an organized race at least 5k in length on that day or an adjacent day. (Thus running a 5k on January 15 will earn the points for January 14, 15, and 16.)

So you can't earn a point for Feb 1, even by running a race on Jan 31.

I am all in favor of slashing Gabe's tires on the other hand. Do it!

Question: Does aqua-jogging count for the challenge? My plantar fascitis is starting to act up and I may be relegated to the pool for the next week or so.

Another related question: I dont understand why my PF is flaring now. I trained all summer and fall for a marathon and it never bothered me. And now it is but I'm not running nearly as much as I was. I have three possible reasons: 1) I'm running trails now and the uneven terrain coupled with the hills is aggravating it (I trained for the marathon on fairly flat asphalt bike path); 2) I need new shoes; 3) I started cycling again and something about how I hold my foot or how my bike shoes fit is aggravating it. Thoughts?

JoePetto

I did one hour on the trainer following a Sufferfest video (The Hunted).  It was just friggin nasty - you can check out the link on my log to see the damage.  I think the format to be much more interesting than watching Coach Troy - but then again I can watch all day coverage of the Giro d'Italia and be happySmile

I do the Sufferfest fight club today, I'm sure if you made me excited, full of dread, or just plain scared. It really adds to the workout doesn't it.

I have three and Fight Club is my favorite - in a sick twisted sort of way.

See a good number of posts about the Sufferfest videos.  Scott and I are not at the point of our training that we will benefit from the intensity.  After April we will be in our training for our HIM.  We may look into the videos at that point. Until then, we will keep on with our Spinervals training for strength.

elizabethk - 2012-01-10 10:25 AM  Samy - You'll see it on here a lot. Run lots, mostly easy, sometimes hard. If your heartrate is high then you should just slow down, even if it feels too easy. Its not. That being said, I know lots of people who train for marathons using a run/walk method, so if it works for you then you should keep doing it. They find (like you) that they can go faster with a short walk break every mile or 15 minutes or whatever works. Last year I ran a HM and the woman next to me did a run/walk and I ran the whole thing - I'd get ahead of her when she walked and then she'd pass me on the run. We ended up finishing in about the same time. I have mixed feelings about the maffetone book (I'm a heretic admitting it in this group) but agree that running mostly easy as he recommends is a good start. Are you following a training plan for your tri?

Thanks Elizabeth. I am intrigue by Maffetone, and planning to buy the book sooner rather than later, especially since my HR always seems high when running. However, I was concerned that if I followed any HR training method from the start, I would need to walk quite a bit, so I decided to train initially with the objective to feel comfortable completing the distances for the Feb 26 sprint race (first ever), and then from there add more complexity to my training. Right now I am more concerned on enjoying and finishing the race than speed. Only been training since October, and have seen major improvements on my endurance and pace while running.

My training plan, a balanced 2x (2R, 2B, 2S per week) I modeled after one of the free sprint training plans in this site, but use distance instead of times. I am trying to see if I can start swimming at lunch, which will free mornings for another run and bike per week (must run more, must run more). Have no speed work, intervals, or anything like that. As a beginner I decided to KISS it.

Having said that, I will follow Ernesto's advice, slow down, and do without the rests. Will test myself every four runs and see where my pace is. The week before the run I will probably try the run/walk method and compare pace to running straight. And will do the faster for the race Laughing

I also feel  that when is time to get into longer distances, there is a psychological advantage in the run/walk method...instead of thinking "OMG, I need to go another 7 miles", I can concentrate on getting to the next walk portion and rest. But I can walk every 2 or 3 miles instead of every one, and the effect might be the same.

Congratulations!  I'm surprised by the amount of us with numerous daughters.  I have 3.  I thought for sure the last one would be a boy...what's the odds of flipping heads three times in a row?  Nope...three beautiful girls.  They are awesome!

Today: 50 minute hard set on trainer - 5x4' intervals at 20 minute power level with 1' of rest in between.  Followed with a 30' recovery run outside. 35 degrees and in shorts.  Made sure I was warm on top.  Felt great! Almost 1/3 through January.

Elizabeth, I know your waiting for a voice of more experience here but thought I'd chime in.  Chris may disagree here but #2 (new shoes) throws a huge red flag for me.  Every time I messed around and delayed getting new sneakers to run in, I would start with one problem or another.  I'm diligent now about replacing my shoes.  My SIL also has PF, I remember her telling me the only time she doesn't have pain is when her shoes are new.  She also mentioned she adds insoles to her shoes about mid life to extend the use a little... HTH's!

Chris, good job with the rules, they seem to be bullet proof enough!

Separately, you and Samy may attempt to slash my tires and even trash my bike, but you cannot take away my freedom (insert Braveheart yell here!) I will complete my January challenge multi-hour bike rides in my youngest daughter's tricycle if that is what it takes

I just wanted to share some good news, not as good as Gabe's but still good news: the company that I work for has given me an "Excellence Award" that only one employee in an entire year gets for my performance in 2011. It's a pretty big deal to me because you guys know the huge amount of hours that I put into work since July of last year and all the efforts. I work for a Fortune 100 company so I think it is considerable since I was nominated and chosen from a long list. I also had no clue even about the nomination. Good time to ask for a raise!

Good father and husband, good triathlete, good coach, and good at work...NOT WORTHY! NOT WORTHY!

Congrats, just as in triathlon, is nice when your hard work is rewarded. Remember when asking for a raise, follow Maffetone and keep you HR low (i.e. don't let them see you sweat).

My brother has PF, he has not run an inch in 20 years. He said that that it is from the way he sleeps. His MD fitted him for braces her wears at night.

Just a quick update...I did my 1.5 mile run as part of my annual fitness test this morning in 9:20.  The first mile clocked in at exactly 6 minutes and I sort of coasted the last half mile.  I was hoping to be a bit faster but as usual I went blazing away at the gun and had to slow down.  I'll post data for it later in my log when I get home and after my bike workout tonight.

Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSED

Random & Im sure most of you know aboout this site, but for those of you who don't they have some great deals on cycling gear, tri gear.  You just have to look every once in a while because the items up for sale change every 20 minutes or so.

Bonktown.com

btw I have no affiliation to them.
