Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did OK in my relay today. I was slower than everyone but 2 I think... but I got it done and climbed that damn causeway bridge 4 times in 20 miles. If I actually did some training, I would do pretty well I think. Next Tri November 11th. The idea of doing today's race alone is enough to scare me into training daily. Oy. The good things.. well I finished, I rode the bridge, no walking, and I met two very nice people with whom I did the relay. There were only 2 Coed teams in the longer distance, so we got a 2nd place medal! Hilarious! my average speed for 20 miles was 14.5... zoiks! yep slow slow on the bridge. We will chalk that one up to participating. I could have dumped this race but a friend found me some team mates and for that I am grateful. Now I get to decide.... run or swim tomorrow? |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Nicely done on the race Steph. I feel the same way about how racing makes one want to train more. I am feeling the knee pain today because all of the Alleve wore off. Def want to regulate my intake of that stuff. My guts were hurting last night because I overdosed it before the race. The knees I can handle, the stomach was just awful. Starting Monday it will be IT Band workouts like crazy. -And there was a porta-john on course yesterday, but I was trying to weigh the time cost. I'm glad I didn't, because I would have lost my sub 2 hour time. ---You are all invited to FaceBook Friend me: Gary Dennis. I have a silver cup that says "East Coast" as a profile pic. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() skibummer - 2012-09-08 10:07 AM It's official: I can now put a 13.1 sticker on my truck. SOOO much fun. A well organized race. At certain intervals there were people playing music. The atmosphere was so relaxed and encouraging at the same time. The best part was that my wife and kids met me at a several spots during the race (They were supposed to be at soccer). That really gave me a smile and some energy. Firstly, let me get it out of the way that I had to pee since mile 2, but couldn't find a spot to go for the entire run. I held a 10:00/mile pace until mile 9. I talked to a lot of people, and saw a few people I knew who were safety patrolling on bikes. At mile 7-9 it was hill hell, but I didn't even notice and that's where I started passing people. Mile 9 started on a down hill, and I really opened it up. From there on out, the passing game was on. I felt great and was FLYING through runners left and right. So at mile 11.5 I started thinking "Umm...it's starting to catch up to me" but then some kids were jamming a cool song on their instruments and that carried me through. And when I started hurting again, there were my wife, kids, and Sis in Law to cheer me on. I held on really strong and zipped through the finish in 1:58:39. A full 12 minutes faster than I anticipated. 9:05 pace/128th out of about 1000ish/9th in my age group (WHOA!!). At mile 10 I was thinking that a sub 2 hr was possible, but kept going back and forth about actually achieving it. Couldn't have had a better time. Next year I will train better. I think I'm hooked on HM, but this was also a dry run for a possible 70.3 attempt next August. EditToAdd: time prediction correction Congrats! Sounds like a great time, great event and great family!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to both of you Skibumm and Steph. Job well done. Going up and down a bridge 4 times almost sound like it might be cruel and unusual punishment.
Funny you brought up ibuprofin. I just listened to a pod cast that talked about taking NSAIDS while training and the doctor on the show explained why they are a big no no. In short, the doctor explained inflammation is part of the rebuilding and healing process of training. If you take NSAIDS to reduce this inflammation, you are actually working against the rebuilding process, hence working against your training. I am pretty sure it was an endurance planet podcast from a few weeks ago. |

Pain can teach you things like: 1. when to stop or slow down 2. that you need to work on your form 3. that you need a day off so many things. NSAIDS are also REALLY hard on the kidneys, Salon Pas makes some great stick on pain reliever thingies... you can buy them at walgreens. I stick 'em every where! |

It has a pool which I really need to use right now. EXCEPT it's kind of in the other direction, and takes 30 minutes each way to and from. Time to be nice to my wife to get my permission slip signed. |

GOOD LUCK!! You will do fine. The biggest thing is pacing. Go much slower than you would think. Then give 'er hell toward the end - like the last 5K or so. Walk through water stops. I used GU for some nutrition, though I don't think it was needed, it did give me a mental boost and probably a small physical boost as well. All I got for finishing was a cool little medal. No shirt or decals or free promo samples of anything. We also got hats, but I don't really wear them when running. I do use them for XC skiing, so if I poke a hole in it, I could then be able to clip it to my backpack when I head out on the trails, but otherwise I think it is just something for my kids to lose. ANYWAY... the medal was cool enough. GOOD LUCK and tell us how you did. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() 5 miles at the track yesterday. Feeling good. My fellow co workers have taken to calling me "Super G" and even put a Superman logo with the letter G (for Gary, duh) on our daily task board. That's cool and all, but if you know my co workers, it wouldn't be that hard to be considered "super". Great bunch of guys, but not athletic in the least sense of the word. I am really in need of a swim. Was going to go yesterday, but the drive is so far that by the time I got there it would've been time to turn around. I pretty sure OWS is no longer an option w/o a wetsuit, which I don't have. Have a good weekend everyone!!! |

![]() ![]() | ![]() 5.5 mile trail run after work. FELT SO GOOD in a THAT HURT SO MUCH kind of way. Up the hill/turnaround/down the hill. Didn't even stop at the vista point. Training for that hill climb race on Columbus Day. I plan on running that course at least once before race day. I'm trying to find similar hills to practice on: STEEP and LONG. Around here that isn't too hard to find. But the actual race course is very tough. A solid base and a good race plan go a long way. I think I'm going to avoid the track in favor for hills and trails until taper. |
