98 degrees outside, heat index over 100.

Scheduled PM workout: Run, 10min threshold intervals x3.

That's a big, tall glass of Nope. I'm thinking 5 easy miles instead.

Water temp in the pool this morning was a bathwater 84 degrees. I think there's a problem when I can feel myself sweating in the pool.

Your experience at the VA is CRAZY but I'm glad you found some piece in your run. Speaking of which - I've been running in florida like weather this week and I don't know how you do it! Brutal!

It's almost the end of the week. It's time to put in the final push to make those goals happen. What are you going to do to get them done?

DQ - 3 swims/bikes/runs, 4 mile run and a 30 mile bike, count my calories, and sign my wife and me for the Smuttynose HM (I finally convinced her to do a race with me)

Thor-3 s/b/r +calorie counting.

Matt - Taper, I have a race Saturday so I'm taking it easy. 2 bike, 1 run, 1 swim, RACE!

Alex - 5 bikes/3 swims/3 runs, log every calorie I consume no exceptions.

Octavio- 3 bike/swim/run. I'll be going out to the bay this sunday for my first OWS.

Justin- At least 1 of each SBR, begin to use LOSE IT, Get back into the BT support mode! *sorry Octavio, almost cut you out of the goals by using an earlier version!

I'm gonna fall 1 bike session short thanks to soreness in my knee but I was able to increase my running milage this week, I've counted my calories like a hawk (the BT Fruit and Veggie challenge has helped - God, I love a competition and am tied for first) and I will sign up for the HM on Sunday (my wife decided not to do it because of finances - one of these days )

On the Keeping it under the limit challenge for the month - I'm 15 for 20 so I should be able to hit my goal of 23.

Morning BTers - Just wanted to tell you 3 things -

1) Last night during my swim - I had absolutely the worst cramp of my life. It hit me on the side of my abdomon (almost in my back) where I have never had one before. Luckily I was in shallow water and was able to rest and it disapated after about 5 minutes. Here's the thing - I think I was fairly hydrated and I've been eating lots of banana's so its not a potassium issue. Anyone else have any ideas why it was so painful? Not a huge issue - but if I get another one like that in deep water when I'm 1/4 of a mile from shore I'm going to be in trouble.

2) A couple of days ago, I was swimming with my son. About midway through the workout I heard him calling my name so I stopped swimming and stood up. He told me the coolest thing. A bald eagle (we have two up here with nests on the lake (and they are awesome creatures!)) had swooped down off his perch and circled over me a couple of times before flying off. So cool and so thankful that the bird decided I wouldn't make a good dinner

3) After dropping my kids off at camp today - I'm gonna go on a Beer Tour. There is a festival about 2 hours south of where I'm headed. I'm also going to try to hit a few of my favorite breweries (Bells, Founders, Perrin). Should be a good day. And as an added bonus, the temps are going to be in the mid 70's today. Thank God!

Have a great day!

Well, hearing about how hard you people are working out has made me thirsty.
Tonight I shall drink beer in honor (honour) of the mightly BDAS. You have not convinced me to get back in the pool for laps but it is a start!
Cheers.
I am starting with a high alcohol Arrogant Ba$tard Ale to kick it up a notch.

What calorie burn do you all follow? My Garmin connect says 364 and when I import it to the BT log it says 771. Not even close to each other but I would think that over 1 hour of cycling is more than 364 calories. Just need to know which is the closest so I don't over eat what I burn.

Baby steps. This year has been full of good intentions of starting to train. Every time I get some traction, I fall off the rails.

Getting out in the 90 degree heat for a 50 min ride today. I got 3 22's on sale at the grocery store last night. Looking forward to trying one of them out.
Got 3 IPA's from Hales, Anderson Valley, and Scuttlebutt.

The Garmin will be, by and far, the most accurate. DC Rainmaker did a write-up on it: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/11/how-calorie-measurement-works-on... [/url">.

Also: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/10/garmin-forerunner-910xt-in-depth... .

Option #2: FirstBeat Algorithm (2nd generation): The Firstbeat algorithm is the most accurate Garmin device calorie measurement that can be done without external testing. But it’s actually not developed natively by Garmin. It’s developed by a Finnish company (Firstbeat Technologies) that has its roots in calculations around Olympic athletes, specifically Nordic skiing. Their calculation uses user inputted variables including gender, height, weight and fitness class. It then combines this data with heart rate information from the ANT+ heart rate strap. Specifically, it evaluates the time between heart beats (beat to beat) to determine estimated MET (Metabolic Equivalent), which in turn is used determine actual work expenditure. This makes the system one of the more accurate non-invasive options (read: doesn’t require a laboratory), within about 10% accuracy. Firstbeat has published a fascinating white paper detailing the technology and accuracy rates. And just to be clear here – you have to wear the HR strap for this to work.

So, when used properly, the Garmin 910 is probably 90% accurate for biking and running; the swim will still be an estimate, since it can't use the HRM.

Personally, I log whatever number the 910 spits out.

It seems like we are just hemorrhaging money since our daughter. Now don't get me wrong, I would give all my worldy possessions away and burn my money if it made her happy, but wow being parents is expensive. My new road bike budget is slowly being eroded by onsies and diapers.

Can totally relate to child expenses. Getting them out of diapers and off formula is like getting a raise and hitting the lottery! We've done that and are on to time savers like tying shoes and brushing teeth. Though these things make life easier, I sure do miss those early years. Enjoy them!

Better yet when they get jobs, come home and announce, "I made dinner.", and have a bags full of take out! Or say hey mom there is a band playing that I think you like and buy concert tix to Saving Able. When they return in kind you know you have done ok as a parent.

Sciatic is not better but I give up! I deemed I would slowly return to training after two solid months of not doing anything. And by slowly I mean so slow I did not time the runs and won't for this week. I ran two miles Wednesday and another two on Saturday, getting back on my barn sour horse so to speak. I stretched before and after ,I taped the hideous blistered and raw toe and survived the heat, mosquitos and foot wounds. This can and will be done.

Sciatic hurts no more or no less than when I wasn't running. I will run again tonight and prepare my bike for a ride tomorrow. Returning to swimming on Wednesday, no make that Tuesday. First weekend in August I am doing a local tri. Won't be my best but it will be mine.

Giddy up Kevin!

That's the spirit Cynthia. If your out there warring with that nerve pain, then I am getting off my A-- and officially putting my hat back into full on training mode. Overcoming that makes my issues seem puny and wimpy. Proud of you for pushing through and hope the activity gives you relief!

Time to get back on the horse for this kid so to speak, before they take it out back and put it out of it's misery.

Hello everyone. Been getting back to training after my race on the 13th. Took the following Monday off and eased back into it with a swim on Tuesday. Man, my legs were sore after running through the cramping! I felt it all the way into Thursday. Got some pretty good runs and bike rides done though. Off to the pool this morning and then maybe a run this afternoon.

Question...I have two weeks of trianing and a taper week until race #2. The run I'm considering today, in addition to my swim, is not on my training plan. I'm beginning to feel like I'm not doing enough on swim days. Do you think adding this run is smart or should I use swim days to rest my legs? I'm currently doing two runs and bike rides per week. Just not sure how hard I should push this early in my training.

On another note, have to brag on my oldest daughter. Played our last softball tournament of the season this past weekend. It was the state 8U and we won the bronze division! Awesome time and a great experience for our girls.

Hope everyone's doing well!

Bill

Had a pretty awesome weekend.
Started off on Thursday night with a tour of the Red Brick Brewery in Atlanta with the wife and some friends. Pretty fun evening, got to sample 4 beers (8oz samples!) then they give you a tour around the brewery. We then went to dinner at a local Mexican place I can't for the life of me remember the name of.
Took Friday work off to spend lots of time and money at IKEA, recover from the brewery tou,r and get ready for my race on Saturday.
Saturday was race day. Overall the race went really well. The swim was downstream in a river with a pretty nice current, making for a pretty easy swim. The bike was mostly along the river through a park and was quite scenic. the run was through the downtown area and there were lots of people cheering you on at the finish. I missed my goal of 1:30 by 4 min 18sec but overall I'm really happy with my performance. I'm blaming the missed goal on the bike course being 1 mile long and the .25 mile uphill run from the river to T1 . I did manage to hurt my self in the swim again. That makes it 2 for 2. This time when I jumped in from the starting platform I scraped a large patch of skin off the side of my foot on a rock. It did not bother me during the race, but has been super painful since then. Shoes are not my friend. I put all the gritty detail in my race report when I have a bit of free time to write it up.
Hope everyone else had a good weekend!

I do it all the time. Your most recent big running week was 11 miles, so adding in a 2 to 4 mile easy run on swim days is a great way to boost mileage without adding too much training stress. Keep it easy, and you probably won't have too many issues.

Alex - That is a great question - and I wish I had a good answer but I don't. I have the same issue. Depending on how long I go for, Mapmyride will give me far more points than lose it. What I usually do is suck it up and go with the more conservative loseit. That way - I know I won't go over my limit.
Does any one else have other thoughts?
