![]() | ![]() Will, no clue on those issues, but hopefully someone in the forum has experienced them. x2 on the heat. We are in a crazy week - mid-high 90s and humid. I went out at 8:00 last night for a "longer" run and cut it short at 4 miles. It was still 92, unheard of up here in NH. I have no clue how you FL types do this! Jen, that bike decal rocks, and absolutely appropriate to get your name on the bike, I could not agree more about the bike count. N+1 is always the answer. I once told my wife this would be the last thing I'd need to add to my bike - I can't even remember what gadget I absolutely had to have at the time. Yah right, the list is endless. Now after watching Dirk's 70.3, I'm debating another $100 to get a wheel cover for my rear 808! |

![]() Hot and humid here too! I walk the dogs at 6:00 a.m. and come home sweating right through my clothes just from walking. Yesterday I couldn't even contemplate running outside in that so I compromised and ran in my SIL's pool. Even in the pool sweat was pouring down my face. No relief. Same this morning and now that it is hot they are throwing gravel down on all the roads so I saved myself the frustration and joined cycling class at the Y this morning. Little did I know the class format has changed so after 30 min of cycling everyone gets off the bikes and leaves the room to go do weights. Ha ha ha, I just sat there pedaling away all by myself staring at the wall with no music or anything. Talk about boring! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, all I got from the forums was some guy telling me to go see a doctor about the high HR issue. I've heard people say that there is somehing you can put in your ear to keep it from getting water logged during swimming... anyone know what it is? rubbin alcohol or something? I may try that so that if it is sweat getting down in my ear, this would probably solve it (since it works in the pool)... |

There are some drops you can put in your ears after swimming that just disinfects in case you get 'swimmers ear'? But were they referring to the wax earplugs that keep the pool/lake water out of your ears? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by pistuo I posted this in the forum but wanted to see if any of you could help: I've got multiple issues that I'm looking for help with. Wondering if anyone has ever had these things happen and/or has any advice for me: 1. On my long runs and bikes lately, my right ear has been getting stopped up. It's super irritating, especially when running b/c my hearing in that ear is muffled and every step vibrates in my head. It does seem to have coincided with the temps getting hotter here in TX... not sure if that could mean sweat in my ear or humidity messing up the pressure in my head (it does feel like when you get off an airplane). 2. After really long, hard efforts (races or WO's) I sometimes get a strange burning sensation on the roof of my mouth. It goes away after a bit, but still annoying. 3. I've had 2 WO's this year (one run and one a bike) where my HR has just skyrocketed and I've been unable to get it back down, even by lowering my effort or even stopping and restarting. I'm fairly confident it is due to the TX heat and humidity. Wondering if there is anything I can take or do to combat it. #1 might possibly be sweat in your ear not draining out. This can happen if you have a wax buildup in your ear. Generally I think the ear canal is shaped such that when you are upright, water will drain out if there is no wax obstructing it. Try q-tips! #2 No idea! #3 How high is 'skyrocketed' and what's your typical HR you would have expected in those situations? And in those situations where you've tried stopping and restarting, are you saying that your HR didn't come down as you were stopped? Or just that when you restarted, it went back to the high number? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Speaking of the heat, we have it here too. It's normal in this area for us to have this weather right now, but the summer has been so mild up until now that it's new to me this year so far. Yesterday I ran in between 7-8am and it was full on horrible! Temp might have been 80 or a few degrees higher, but humidity was probably about 95% and the sun was already hot! Then in the evening I ran outside again. 95 degrees, but lower humidity and it actually didn't feel as uncomfortable. But as a result I think I'm still behind on my hydration---and I'm going to run outside again in an hour! ![]() |

They both have to do with your breathing I unfortunately get the same thing. #1 This happens When I workout with my trainer, when I first started with him it was really bad then as I gained better fitness it got better but now he has upped the workouts and it started again apparently with the gasping for air ![]() #2 Iam not sure we are talking about the same thing but this happened when I did my first HIM my throat hurt/ was sore especially when I ate or drank anything the pain also went into my ears, and it lasted for several days, this last half it only lasted for a few hours, again the trainer said it has to do with not breathing properly and that i pushed too hard for something I hadn't trained properly for. Which totally sucks because I am rediculously slow. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk Iam still deciding on tri-Indy. I just feel like I am so slow that I don't want to do anymore races until I can get at least a little faster. I will let you know ASAP. So Iam really looking forward to volunteering for the on Half Sunday, there are 2500 people registered plus the local tri group is having a fund raiser on Saturday so I am helping with that too, they just started in Dec and the group is growing like crazy anyway it should be a great weekend. We've been a little crazy at work one of my girls had emergency surgery, she was miss diagnosed and ended up having a Fallopian tube burst, they pumped a liter of blood out of her stomach. What makes me mad is she was dealing with pain, and dizzyness/weakness for over 2 weeks and they just blew her off. We also got a new marketing program that intergrates with our salon software And I had to get that all taken care of. Looks like I will be getting to meet Brenda and her daughter in Madison for Tony's IM. We are volunteering at the same aid station along with my sons girlfriend, Maria shes themone that wants to start doing triathlons she is so excited Iam hoping this is what gets her to really start! |

Could imagine trying to get a bike fitting on that thing. I'm pretty sure the fitter would quit. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() UMMMM? Not sure what just happened but I may be learning how to swim, like really swim. Earlier in the week I was bragging about holding a flat 2:00 pace for several 100's. today I just completely blew past that and went sub 2:00, here was today's WO WU; 250 MS: 10x100, 20s rest (Average pace 1:58) 1x500 (time 11:58) 20x50, 20s rest (Average pace 1:01) CD: easy 50 breaststroke, not in time or distance, all notice the average pace of the set of 10x100. My fastest lap came in at 1:53 and the slowest was around 2:03. I was in complete shock when I seen the 1st lap at 1:53, I think there was even an audible wtf! Then the 2nd was at 1:54 and I slowly dropped from there for the next 6 laps until I finally started to drop down towards 2:00. The 500 was an easy effort then came the 50's and around lap 12 or 13 I was completely falling a part but held tough to keep the average right around 1:00. I passed on the local 5k today and did this work out instead, probably the 1st time I was happy that I went swimming instead of running! |

Or just that when you restarted, it went back to the high number? 160 is the highest I've ever seen my HR. My 100% is around 150 (Is that called threshold?). In these situations, it's gone up to the 160 range. When that has happened, I've tried lowering effort but to not avail. I've also tried stopping and restarting. It will go down when stopped (although slower than normal), but even when I restart at a much lower effort (like a zone 2 effort), it just shoots right back up. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the replies everyone. Hopefully I can get these issues figured out. I had a great ride tonight and hoping to go 80 Saturday. Mambos - way to kill that swim. It seems like many people have almost instant breakthroughs in swimming. I think you just hit one. ![]() |

I'm fairly confident it is due to the TX heat and humidity. Wondering if there is anything I can take or do to combat it. My thoughts:Something similar happens to me most of the year but I believe I can tie it to sweat too. My ears get a really thin layer or what I believe is salty sweat that dries and itches almost constantly. In the past couple of months I've learned to use ear drops after swims and sometimes when I've run or ridden when it's been fairly hot out (mostly long kinds of workouts). Using these drops may clear up any excessive liquids that remain trapped after a shower or workout.
Combating the heat is a really personal thing. I just spoke to an KQ athlete that says he's better in the heat and can work though it better than most. (He KQ'd at Louisville last year.) Keeping hydrated very well will help the most but you can make sure you complete your workouts in the cooler parts of the day, so looping courses through your neighborhood and set a sprinkler out to run through each loop (but that would be VERY boring). If you are experiencing significant cramping during long work outs then you can take some salt tabs to help reduce those chances. You can try to purchase some of the arm coolers (they look like arm warmers) that can keep the sun off your skin to help provide some of the radiant heat from getting to you. I cannot say with personal experience that these work well but I can tell you that a long sleeve shirt at work has helped me on occasion when the sun is really beating down. It seems to remove that radiant heat and had a "somewhat" cooling effect to my skin. Edited by DirkP 2013-07-19 12:40 PM |

![]() | ![]() Matt, great job on the swimming, That's exactly how I've seen improvements in running and cycling. I seem to get "stuck" for a while at a certain level but just keep working away trusting something is happening. Then at some point there seems to be a leap and a new normal, higher, level. Just keep cracking. Or not, since our halfs are only 7 weeks away! |

I can tell you from experience that when I throw away the 'race' mindset and just participate in it as an easy Z3 workout that the event has a whole different feel and can be really fun! |

In the heat of the summer I will run 10-20bpm higher than the same effort would produce in comfortably cool conditions. And it's not necessarily that the run FEELS that much harder either...Your body needs X amount of oxygen to run so the heart and lungs provide that with a heart rate of Y. But because it's so hot, all of the capillaries to your skin open up to send the blood to the periphery to cool and radiate body heat away. Your system still provides X oxygen but now needs to step up the blood flow to the skin so it takes more flow from the heart. Your heart rate will then be Y + y = Y' ![]() |

Humidity also plays a huge part as it limits our body's ability to cool itself down, making the y even bigger in Jeff's equation. With this current bout of heat/humidity, I've seen HR numbers about 15-20 higher than normal. Another thing I haven't totally figured out is you second point about the HR not going down after harder efforts. I've experienced this same phenomenon unrelated to heat. Let's say I'm running at pace x and HR y, and can go this pace at this HR for a long, long time without my HR drifting upwards. If I add one hard hill or one interval, so my HR spikes for a bit, and then I settle back to pace x, my HR goes back to a steady number, but it is always higher than y for the remainder of the run. I understand cardiac drift, and maybe this is a artifact of that, but I could easily run at pace x and not have my HR drift beyond y until I get it higher for a little while. I call it the "grease the skids" HR drift. Not sure what's the physiology behind it, but it seems to hold true for other people as well. Edited by wbayek 2013-07-19 12:22 PM |
