Hope Rene is doing well too!

Congratulations, Matt!  That's an amazing accomplishment for someone in their first year of triathlons!  Can't wait to read the race report.  Rene, hope your race went well and the foot didn't give you any problems.

Hey guys,

I don't want to distract from the fantastic achievements of this weekend, but I had a question come up this weekend:

I have a road bike that I bought new in 1996. At that time, I put brand new Look pedals on and have ridden with clipless pedals ever since. Over the last three months or so, clipping out of the left side has become harder and harder (to the point that last weekend, I had to call up from the basement to get my husband to help me clip out). I went to the Look website to see how to adjust the tension on the pedal and (surprise, surprise) couldn't find my exact pedal...I found one that was close and tried to adjust the tension...but found out when I had the tension all the way off - it was still REALLY hard to clip out. So, my question is two-fold: 1) Can these pedals wear out (they are metal - so I guess I thought they couldn't)? and 2) should I invest in new pedals (seriously - 14 years is pretty long, I can always take the new pedals off this bike when I get to upgrade to a new bike in the next year)?

Okay - must start paying attention to the conference call going on...your advice (as always) is appreciated!

Answers to your two questions...
1) I have no clue! =)  It stands to reason that they would wear out (everything wears out eventually, doesn't it?).  But I would think that a pedal wearing out would cause it to get looser, not tighter???
2) I say when in doubt, invest in a new tri-toy!  But seriously, the pedal is such an important safety aspect of the bike, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Ah yes, BT is a nice distraction from conference calls.  I wish I could bring it up on my Blackberry when I'm in long, boring meetings.

Like Bill, I have heard of old pedals and cleats UN-clipping at inopportune times, but not refusing to unclip.  Are the cleats old as well?

That was my thought as well. The cleats are relatively new (I got them when I got the new bike shoes a couple of months back) I lubed up the pedal last night in the hopes that it would work it's way out...but not much change today. Looks like I'll start stalking bonktown.com for pedals on sale.

wbayek - 2010-05-15 7:30 PM I have a question for bike climbing.

Today's ride included a big climb about halfway through which I love to do.  It's up a ski resort access road - 2.5 miles and about 800 feet per Delorme maps.  Three of the steep sections have grades over 10% for short sections, like 100 yards or so.  When I pedal up those sections, I'm going like 6-7 mph, in fact today I was at 5.6 at one point.  Is such a slow rate "normal" up sections that steep or do I need more work at climbing?

Yes its pretty normal and yes you need to work more at climbing.

Pedals do wear out, but more typically in the bearings. There should be a tensioner/set-screw try messing with that. When the cleat on the shoe wears out you typically start to slip out and can not stay in the pedal.

My race report  Smile

I ran the Windermere Half Marathon (13.1 miles) in 1:33:06 (7:06 pace). I missed my personal record by TWO SECONDS!!

Placed 26th out of 852.

Placed 5th in my age group.

http://www.milliseconds.com/participants/final_list/overall/142424

Even though I was having calf issues during the run I was just GRATEFUL to be able to participate in such a cool event! It was great to see all those runners challenging themselves, all the volunteers cheering and handing out water and the friends cheering us on!

In the end, both of my calves are very sore.  I actually had to stop and stretch once and had to slow down because my calves were tightening up.  My heal wasn't much of an issue  during the race.  I spoke with one fellow after the race (he barely beat me!) and he said he had heal issues in the past also and used "strassburg socks" which eliminated the problem.  I ordered some in since this seems to be a chronic issue for me.  I will try them out and hope for the best.

Fantastic! That's awesome...just think if you hadn't had the calf issues. So glad the race went well - and I love going to races where you get inspired by the participants.

This made me laugh. Warren - there are times when I am riding around here (also - VERY hilly) when I think to myself that I could actually walk/run faster than riding my bike up the hills. I asked a biking friend of mine how to get better on the hills and his response was the classic, "Ride more hills." <Sigh>

Well done, Rene!  That is a very impressive time, especially considering you stopped to stretch at one point.  You could have stopped for lunch and still beat me! Tongue out  I hope you can figure out the foot issues.  What about the guy that won the race... 1:07?!?!?  That's freakin rediculous!

Great race Rene.  7:06 pace seems surreal to me for 13.1 miles.  I'm with Bill.  You'd have your post race food, shower, and nap done and have plenty of time to cheer me as I cross the finish line!

Thanks for the encouragement Aaron, I know I could use more hill work!  Laughing  I guess I'm just always shocked how quickly I slow down going up hills, and since I ride alone I don't know how much hills affect others.

Sorry to disappoint the group, but it looks like I'm not going to be doing the race this weekend - we're going to be painting the cottage.  Though I did do my 250 yd TT this morning just in case it rains or something changes (the race asks for an estimated time for a 250 yd swim since it's a pool snake swim).

Awesome, top 3% of the race. Try some compression socks. For some they alleviate calve issues as well.

That was the response I was looking for. Often it is just about riding more hills and pacing well up them so you can get back to hammering it.
