Awesome report and good job running the race! Following your credo for my half on sunday!

Go for it!!!  Aim for negative splits.  Go for 8, 7:45, and 7:30 miles.  Hell, if you can sustain 7:30-7:45 all the way, just go for it.  Be ready for pain the day after for sure...

Lol I still have some pain from my 10k.  Went for the first recovery run today and doing another this afternoon.  Talking to my coach he thinks I should run the first 1/2 (he says closer to 2/3) at 8 min miles before I take off.  This is definitely my "B race" and he thinks I should keep that in mind.  I'm ready for the pain.

Well good luck!  Aim for 1:45 and see how much faster you can go after the 1st half.  Have a clear plan of action and stick to it.

So I had a physical today at 1 pm that I had to fast for. No eating until the blood was drawn.

Following, I wet to the gym to do a 1000 time trial and a 5 mile easy run.

Good News - TT went great. 16:40 (1:40 splits)! I was very fresh at the end and could have kept going at that pace. I was very happy.

Bad News - Got on the treadmill, ran for like ten minutes, walked about ten more, and then died. I had eaten a banana and PB&J right after my bloodwork (about an hour and a half before hitting the treadmill) but I bonked big time. Quit, came home, and took a two hour nap. Now I'm a zombie.

My body really is used to breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and maybe snack before bed. This just goes to show me the impact nutrition plays on a daily basis.

Oh yeah....did I mention the TT time? :-) Very Happy!

Rest day tomorrow, thank goodness! I need to recover from not eating for 14 hours.

JG_GreenCoast - 2011-02-06 4:20 PM I'm curious as to what you all think, particularly Jessica, about this upcoming week for me.  This is week 08 of the plan: http://beginnertriathlete.com/Scott%20Herrick/halfim/Week08.pdf

Basically, I am running a half marathon on Sunday and am going to give it a high level of effort as the time means something to me.  Sunday is the first substantive SBR workout and I could just do the half in lieu of this.  I want to keep the saturday free.  What do you guys think I should do/rearrange for this week?

Thanks!

There will be other opportunities to do a race simulation day, so sub in the race for that workout on Sunday. I don't think you should do the 90 minute run, either, if you really want to do well in the HM.
Take Saturday off or jog for no more than 20 minutes. Friday you can keep the swim, Thursday do no more than 60 minutes of running. Perhaps 45 minutes with 5x30 seconds of strides with about 1-2 minutes between.
Good luck!!

This is excellent, thanks.  Will post when done with this race.  Just broke up with the girl that was my support and I had the whole race weekend planned with her so am gonna need to figure something out !! Hoping I feel much better then...my legs are certainly shot from the 10k tt and I am still very under the weather.  Still excited though

Just means you will be available after the race to meet some great athletic girl who will want to train with you!

Seriously I would die for that...I'm so waiting for a triathlete or runner to fall into my lap.

Dear all-

I posted a while ago, in November, that I am doing the Half in Cancun in September.  I am on week 10 now of a similar plan from Asdeporte.com.  I felt like it would be better to do a full 8 month plan instead of 2, 20 weeks.  Anyway, how does everyone feel when they get sick?  I havent been able to workout in about 5 days now and I am going nuts.  I feel guilty, and I feel like a fat pig.  I am worried that this sick week is going to really mess up my training.  I havent been eating anything stupid like donuts, etc.  Im worried that being sick is going to make me finish at 8 hours 1 minute and then I get DNF slapped by my name or something absurd like that.

How do we deal with this?  How do you tell yourself to CHILL OUT like a normal person!

I have been sick for a few days and my workouts have definitely suffered, but if you can start you can finish.  I ran a 10k last week with a 101 fever and a really bad cold.  No, it wasn't optimal, but I had a PR and more importantly finished.

Just relax, and there's no reason to eat poorly.  I know it's easy to do but you should not be eating worse when you are sick.  Don't let yourself do this.  Being sick is okay, sliding is not. Relax and breathe deeply and exhale completely.  Thats a long way away and this will not be a defining moment.

I had the flu 2 weeks ago (still coughing a bit) and missed 4 days and felt the same way! I was a little week when I cam back but have quickly recovered. You have put in the time over the weeks and 5 or 6 days doesn't hurt you! Just keep looking at the big picture and don't worry about the small bump!

This will not mess up your training. You have plenty of time to get back into your routine and depending on hard you have been training the break may leave you refreshed and really pumped up for the next phase of your training. I missed six months last year being very, very sick and while I did have to start over I was able to do so without the aches and pains that had accumulated over the course of months of hard training. Hope you feel better soon.

I tried to venture to similar IM swim distance today.  Swam 4500 yards in 1:20 on 9x500 with 30secs in between.  It was a looooooooooooooooong swim but I felt pretty good after.  Not winded or anything.

Naah.  I think it was ok.  It was quite a milestone for me for sure 'coz my longest swim before that was 2600m.  Also, there's definitely some breakdown on the technique on some stretches during the swim but nothing too drastic.

I decided to do it 'coz I can't really run yet 'coz thighs are still a tiny bit tender.  I did walk on it (Mon) and walk-jog-run (Wed) but nothing too taxing.  Plus century ride is on Saturday so I kinda want to save the thighs.

Oh and good luck on your HIM.  I'm predicting 1:43...

I was looking forward into the schedule today. Just wondering if any of you have completed the weeks that focus more on one event? Like there is a week with 6 swims, followed by a week with 5 runs then 5 rides. What kind of effect did that have on your overall training? I live 40 minutes away from the pool so chances are not good that I will be able to swim 6 different times in one week! Especially if gas prices keep rising

Also I think the bike is my weakest event. I just bought a new tri bike and the weather is letting up a little. I think I would like to add another day on my bike. I was hoping someone could give me some advice about how long the ride should be and where to put it. Should I wait until I get out of this base phase? I'm just finishing week 2 today.

Thanks!

For me I think these were the best weeks in terms of physical training and confidence building. I overdid them a bit, but getting in 160mi of biking, 6mi of swimming, or like 50mi of running just both felt amazing and gave me lots of confidence.  My swimming still sucks but I think these weeks were excellent for my overall training.  I'd try to keep your head down and power through them.  A huge week of swimming will have great effects on your biking and running.

I liked these weeks.  It felt good to really focus on the individual sport for a week at a time.  I didn't do all of the swim days, though.

Did my first century ride in Tour de Palm Springs today!!!  We did it in almost 7 hours.  It was a hot and long day.  I had sunburn at the back of my knees.

This was my farthest ride.  Longest ride before this was 50 miles (56?).  The distance definitely made my thighs super tired.  I felt it at mile 75 and I was fading bad.  Good thing one of the guys from the cycling club decided to ride with me.  I got second wind after that and finished strong.

It was a very humbling ride and it only goes to show how much traning I have to do before I'm even half decent for Full Vineman.
