Hello All! It is over 80 degrees in NC...totally insane!

Going to take the kids to their tri practice (they are swimming tonight) and get a quick 1 or 2 mile run in while they are doing their thing.

Looking forward to the Shamrock 8K in Virginia Beach this Saturday.  The kids are doing their 1 mile 'Smile Mile' - I hope it's well organized because I'm getting a little freaked out since I just read that there will be 4500 kids running the smile mile! How amazing is that! Of course the paranoid mom in me is worried about ALL THOSE PEOPLE!!

Is that one on the beach front? My husband and I met while living down there. I was a Norfolk girl and he lived inland, but we would spend a lot of time out at the beach...back then we were into rollerblading... Where are you staying? I loved it down there...DH not so much...

Question:

I'm thinking of increasing my run loop to about 3.1 miles.  I am working on the C25K plan which is based on 30 minutes 3 times/week.

My current loop is 2.5 miles.  Should I stick with this or increase to 3.1 to give me a longer excercise time?  It takes me about 39 minutes to do the 2.5 at this point.

BTW, Has anyone seen a mentor?

I would continue to run the 2.5 miles and walk the last .6 VERY BRISKLY!!! Once you've done that for a week or so, start stretching the 2.5 run out. Once you get past the mental issue of, OMG I'm running longer than I'm used to, I think you'll find you cover that last .6 without a whole lot of extra effort...

Does that sound reasonable to you???

Yours and Dave's comments make a lot of sense.  I just wanted to make sure.  I guess I'm starting to "LIKE" this stuff, ouch, a bug just bit me.  Where's my EPI pen, LOL

I'm hoping to join the county college pool so I can start swimming next week.  I want to start out with one night a week, and then in  a few weeks I'll either bike there or bring it in my car to ride after the swim.

I'm thinking of a sprint Tri in late April, OMG, I may actually do this   AAAGGGGHHHH!

OMG! This was an awesome day! Ran the shamrock 8k this morning in Virginia beach! With 8000 other people I had a good run, did some intervals, goal was to do it under an hour and I came in at 59:52! I'm taking it! When I hit mile 4 I realized if I wanted under an hour I'd have to run the last one without stopping and I did it! Beer on the beach by 9am , can't beat that on st paddy's day Then, can I just brag on my kiddos for a minute? They did their one mile race (4500 kids running, amazing) and my 8 year old finished in 7:23!!! So cool! My 10 year old did 10:25 which was awesome too. Well organized and lots of fun, all around worth the trip. Stayed at the Hilton and both races started and finished right out front so it was a great location. Thanks for reading my brag

Well, did the breaststroke (or as any spectator who was there would call it "the wounded turtle") last Wednesday as part of my swim workout, and I have to agree...it did work some muscles that aren't normally getting work.  I'm sure my technique is horrible, but I'll stick with it from time to time until they start laughing at me!

Good job to the recent racers!

Cycled a 13.1 mile loop today, almost 14 mph average.  57 minutes.  It should be a good loop to practice getting faster. Planning on running 3x this week with a 1 1/2 hour massage at the end of the day Friday.

Speedy yes, we've always called her 'dash' but the hilarious thing is I said to her, "so you ran the whole mile straight, you finished pretty quick!?!" and she said "nah, I walked for a bit around the corner cause everyone was pushing each other" LOL, so I guess 7:23 with a bit of a walk break

Cool! You're getting there...personally I've decided it's the bike I dread...I find it boring and I still can't figure out my gears! Embarassed

Love that massage! I go to a guy who does trigger point therapy and it is sooo painful but works sooo good that I just keep going. No falling asleep during one of his massages!

Ok, so today was a bad day to run.  Legs hurt right from the start.  When I hit 2 miles I realized I was dehydrated, joints were swollen, and I walked the last 3/4 of a mile.  Well, Wednesday should be a better day.  Still did the 2.5 miles.

TL, sorry to hear about the run. I know that I get very frustrated by my bad runs also. You will kill it tomorrow though!

Other things...I feel that my biking and running are coming along, but I am STRUGGLING in my swim. I know that I have not swam in 20+ years but it is frustrating. I need to just become more comfortable with it. Any suggestions on getting better, well besides practice and coaching. Isn't there like a swim better pill that is made by the same company that makes the get skinny pill? LOL

If you find such a pill let me know!  I'm IN.

I did get my butt in the pool yesterday and actually had a good swim.  I felt good.  I kept away the negative thoughts and just did the work.  It's such a mental issue for me...much more than a physical one I think.  So, for me it's about changing my mind.  So, yesterday was a good start to that, I'm happy to say.  My sprint tri is 4/15.  Around the corner!

Thanks for all the encouraging words.  What I find really interesting is that I'm not afraid of the swim at all and I dread the run.  I am happy at my progress in running, just wish I could get past this 12 minute wall I have.  Maybe today.  Tomorrow is pay day so I will finally join the county college pool to start swimming.

Hey all,

Started off great through january and early february.  Feel like I'm in good health and my run times are improving; I'm hit or miss with swimming.  Haven't touched the bike in the last couple weeks, but as my calendar calls for longer rides, I fear the accompanying back-pain and saddle-pain.  Riding hurts more than the other two and I don't think it should.  Last month or so has been a ridiculous mix of sick and busy and I can't seem to dial in the routine.  New head cold and sinus headache today.  Frustrated.  The banners that scroll across the top of the various pages in BT featuring cut athletes modeling the latest xterra wetsuits or whatever have me feeling resentful, "other," defeated.  My workout calendar mocks me.

Glad to be connected to this group and encouraged by your successes and great attitudes, but I'm having a tough time nevertheless.  Hoping to draft on some of your good vibes in the coming weeks.

Kent,

You may want to look into a different saddle for your bike, Maybe a seat area so its comfortable.  My legs kill me every time I run, so I feel your pain!

I did just come home from a 90 minute massage.  My calfs hurt like hell right now, but I know by my next run on Sunday I should feel better.

Yes, don't you just hate those guys in the banners. (Sorry Dave - just kidding).  I'm looking forward to looking half that good.  Hey wait a minute, my lower half (legs) already do.  My EW (ex wife) was always jealous how great my calfs look. Oh Yea.

Hey, does pushing a lawn mower for over 3 miles count for anything?

I need to just become more comfortable with it. Any suggestions on getting better, well besides practice and coaching. Isn't there like a swim better pill that is made by the same company that makes the get skinny pill? LOL

I know it's frustrating. It helps to think of it like a golf swing...you know what you want to do, it's just hard to make yourself do it...

Can you get anyone to take a little video of your swim? It helps so much and is surprising to see how you look vs. how you feel.

And the inventor of that pill would make millions...
