Extreme Veteran 469 Albany, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Question for everyone...This whole threshold thing is still confusing me. I've been training at a low HR, staying in zone 2 with the top HR being 148. Well yesterday I did my first spin class ever and it was with my new group. As you can see from my log, my HR was significantly higher the whole time. (this includes a 10 min w/u and 10 min c/d so the 161 is probably more like 165.) How is this going to benefit me especially since I've been told to stay in zone 2? Not sure if anyone has a simple explanation. Another thing is I don't think during an IM I'll really hit zone 4. Maybe I'm just over thinking. |

Not sure if anyone has a simple explanation. Another thing is I don't think during an IM I'll really hit zone 4. Maybe I'm just over thinking. I wouldn't worry about hitting high zones in spinning. Its fun right? Yes, you are supposed to spend most of your time in Z2 while IM training, but as your workouts get longer, that should be happening. You'll most likely be doing 5-6 hour bike rides and it will be important to keep moderation. Your high HR spinning is probably less than an hour. Also, biking is different than running. Your recovery from a hard effort is probably easier. If you are hitting high zones in running for extended periods of time, you're not just taxing your muscles (heart included) but probably pounding some pavement and making for a hard recovery. You wont race an IM near threshold, but the higher your threshold is the faster you are at xx% of your threshold. |

Maybe I'm just over thinking. Doing this type of workout once or twice a week on the bike is not going to hurt you at all, if anything it may help some. Avoiding the threshold type work is a bigger issue on the run where you run the higher risk of injury. Not to say that all of your riding should be a spin class type intensity, you should still get as much Z2 work as possible in addition to the occasional higher intensity work. As an explanation, doing 2 hours in Z2 or Z3 is designed to build endurance and over time will increase your power threshold. The Z5 intervals is designed to increase your Vo2 Max which in turn will help raise your threshold level with consistent work. |

Busy week and an especially busy day! Getting some good work in training wise though, so that is good. Really upped the pool frequency this week, but since I started with 0 to 1 pool trip per week, that bar was kind of low. Swim meet Sunday for our masters group. Swimming the freestyle events, 50 , 100, 200 and 500 basically to get another pool session in plus it gives me some intensity that I don't always get on my own. I will still do my long run before the meet and my 2 hour bike session on the trainer Saturday. Anyone else racing this weekend or have big workouts? Have a great weekend everyone! I'm impressed by your recent love for swimming! I learned to jump off the blocks last night! LOL lost my goggles almost everytime! hahaha! Masters is going well though Got big workout tomorrow, well......really all weekend. 1 hour swim/3 hour bike/15' transition run. Then sunday another 3 hours on the trainer. Last big weekend of base miles though! Ken, have a great meet. My masters group is always pushing them, but I just can't pull the trigger, especially with my swim speeds... Brian, just when I was starting to think how good it would be to have a coach.... If I did, and he asked me to do 6 hours on the trainer this weekend, then I wouldn't have a coach anymore... You are a Monster with those training volumes. As for me, a little bike and lot of run this weekend. I'm supposed to do 21 miles on Sunday, but we'll see. Today I had some pretty big pains that turned my 11 miler into 1. I got a new hydration thing today, and I'm hoping it helps. |

Last big weekend of base miles though! Well, since one of my races is in a lake with alligators and snakes, and another is in the ocean with sharks I figured it would be wise to be faster than average! Just kidding (Robin, there are no snakes in that lake!) After missing almost a year and having taken the lessons before the injury, I want to take advantage of the opportunity to improve. Thanks! Sounds like you and your new trainer are going to get intimately familiar with each other this weekend! Haha! you read my mind! Actually alligators scare me more than snakes. And as long as there are no spiders in the water I should be good. I just have a short run left for the week and will do that tomorrow - skipped out on a swim today 'cause I don't like driving into town when it is snowing. Other than the one swim I will finish my longest week yet golden - next week taper! |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Did a 5K race this morning to test my heart rate zones. Only 16 seconds slower than my 5K PR, which I'm really happy with since I haven't been doing any speed work lately. Perfect running conditions--54 degrees, flat course, no wind. My HR with a half mile to go was 180, and the formula I've been using (with no testing) had me at 182, so that's pretty close! Have a great weekend, all! |

I second what Ken said about all my PR's coming during or shortly after marathon training with the exception of my 1/2 marathon PR. So... As soon as I wrote the positive review of the KK trainer I think I Jynxed myself! I gave my old road machine to my wife. Sure enough it started making a funny noise while riding it last night. I took a video and sent it to KK. They sent out a new resistance unit for me this morning! So while it did have a problem, they fixed it and promptly for sure. So two thumbs up to KK for that! |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Anybody sick of breaking their equipment? :-) Broke my helmet Roc Lock (I have the Giro Helmet), in two pieces. I can still wear it, but I can't tighten it. I'll have to call Giro for replacement parts. Something's funny with my bike - it happened three times today, and a couple times last week. When I would get into my small front, and big in the back, depending on how I shift, the chain jumps off the teeth and onto the tire hub. Noticed that my cable is a bit frayed in the front where it's attached to the derailleur. THEN....on top of that, I noticed that I have a couple small gashes on my tires. UGH! Looks like I'll have to bring my bike in for a look over, replace the cable (it still works, but I don't want to risk it snapping off before heading to Moab), get new tires and get my helmet fixed. At least it's happened NOW rather than during Moab! :-) Hope everyone else had a great weekend! |

You are right though, better during training then during an event! It sounds like your chain problems are related to the cable issue. |

I would love to be only 16 secs away from my pb! Today I went out on my bike with clipped pedals on for the first time. Nothing on the bike broke but I have damaged myself a little. First falling off was at 15 secs - still in car park we started from. I couldn't work out how to clip in second foot and keep moving at the same time. Second fall off came up a steep hill - I ran out of gears (this is not new) and came to a stop. Couldn't unclip in time so feel into a nicely placed bramble. Luckily the people I was with didn't laugh too much. I have a little gravel rash, cuts and bruises - but at least I'm cheaper to heal than the bike!! I think the rest of you work very hard at the weekends. Jennifer |

If it's any consolation I love my clipless pedals now and couldn't ride without them. It didn't stop me from several 0 mph crashes early on, though. After the first one I balanced my bike on a fence and just practiced clipping in and out. I did the same thing on some short, easy rides, just clipped in and out, with both feet, until I thought it was second nature. Still find I have to pay attention as I approach a light, to make sure I clip out on the side I'm going to lean towards! Glad you're not injured too badly. |

Stick with it and it will become second nature. When I first started this triathlon thing back in 06, I had lost a bunch of weight and the local newspaper wanted to do a story about it tied to the local triathlon. After the interview they wanted some action shots on the bike, and I had a clip out incident during the shoot. Fortunately it was after he had stopped taking pictures and we were wrapping up and they kindly didn't mention it in the article! |

CLOSED Swim meet went ok, managed to get seeded with the F70 lady and proceeded to get soundly beat by her in every race. I swam in 4 events all freestyle. I think that I get too wrapped up in the racing and let my form go too much. Although my paces were faster than my training paces, I sure seem to be working harder then the guys that go under 1:00 per 100 yards. And starting off the blocks is an interesting experience! |

At Master's swim, some people will start using flippers when the intervals are too hard (I'm in one of the slowest lanes, so sometimes we just can't make them, the coach only gives 2 options generally, and sometimes those options feel like "superman fast" and "too fast"). I think if the interval is too hard, it is better to just sit one out and take some extra rest. Everyone else puts their flippers on. What do you think? |

I'm surprised that the coach doesn't have different lanes with different times - to go on the same interval as the fast lane seems silly to me. The point is too make the interval at the prescribed effort. If you can't make it - it is too fast. If I can't make an interval I just take an extra break 'cause I probably need it. |

Expert 943 Highlands Ranch, CO | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Hello All,I think that I am finally starting to find my motivation to train. I had some dental surgery almost two weeks ago which set me back a small bit but besides not being able to get in the pool, I was able to run some after a few days. Yesterday I did the final 10 mile race in the winter distance series here in CO. I was worried about not being able to finish so I decided to turn my timing chip in and just do what I could without the pressure of having to finish and have people wait for me,etc. It really did help me mentally and I actually cut seven minutes off my time from last month's 10 mile race on the same course. (Last month's race didn't go very well).I am seriously considering participating in a training camp for IMWI in July but I have a dilemma regarding my bike. I don't want to spend a lot of money getting my bike to and from WI for one ride on the course and I don't have the time or even the smallest desire to drive to WI. A friend suggested I rent a bike. I did some research and could rent a road bike. Has anyone done this(rent a bike for training or racing)? Kathleen Edited by Kath2163 2013-02-17 9:17 PM |

I don't know if it was the falls yesterday or the swimming last night but my shoulders really ache today - so I'm putting in a rest day and rearranging my planned sessions for later in the week. Maybe I am really too old for all this. Mind you, saying that - once i was clipped in yesterday it definitely made me a little quicker I think Lovely bruises on legs today. Can't help on the swimming front - but surely its up to the coach to say if people should wear flippers or not? Jennifer |
